Long time resident of Little Switzerland. I designed and built my vacation rental cabins keeping in mind what I would be looking for in a residence for my self / rental property in the mountains. Enjoy the natural beauty, quality of life and sustainability this area provides. Spend most of my time outdoor hiking and tending the garden..
The Perch Cabin has a prime location and all the amenities including a panoramic view that's unrivaled..
Located on a private road 2/10 of mile with in easy walking distance to the village of Little Switzerland
I was expecting a fantastic view but there aren't words to describe the view, it was incredible. We had great weather and spent a lot of time on the deck drinking coffee, having cocktails and dinner. When it got cooler at night we went inside and enjoyed a fire in the fireplace. We slept great in a comfortable bed with plenty of pillows and covers. I'm looking forward to returning.
We had a wonderful time. The cabin was cozy, the views were breathtaking, and it is close to many great hiking areas. We visited Mount Mitchell and Grandfather Mountain as well as Crabtree Falls and drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is an excellent location; close to amenities and yet very much in the great outdoors. Rick was great and easy to work with. Highly recommend!
The views from The Perch are absolutely amazing! Upon our arrival, the valley was filled with clouds and fog and the majestic view from the deck was breathtaking. Rick was a great host and greeted us on arrival and briefed us on several area attractions. He also shared some delicious homemade soup with us and stopped by to make sure we had plenty of firewood for our last evening at the cabin and even offered us a little later checkout since the cabin was immediately booked behind us. We hiked to Grassy Creek Falls from the cabin and upon our return enjoyed a nice soak in the hot tub! The location, just off the Parkway, is great; however, we've often found during winter travels that portions are frequently closed so be sure to have an alternate route planned rather than relying on the Parkway. Little Switzerland looked to be a quaint town; however, everything in that area was closed for the winter during our stay. We will definitely visit again during the season. Thanks again Rick for your hospitality!
First, this cabin really was nice. The view is absolutely beautiful. Be aware that bedroom upstairs and bedroom downstairs are separated by an outdoor stairway.
We had a couple of issues while we stayed. Admittedly, my husband did not see the minimum age limit. We arrived with a 3 year old and an infant. The owner decided to let us stay, which was nice considering how long it took us to arrive. Given the age of our children, we could not put them in the second bedroom (totally our issue). The owner told us there was futon we could use, which we did. However, he said we couldn't open it into a bed because it had been broken before and he didn't want it broken again. He said we could use it as a couch or put the mattress on the floor. We opted for the second option until he texted us 10 minutes later stating we couldn't put the mattress on the floor. We wound up turning the couch around each night (so there was no way to roll onto the floor).
The biggest issue came at checkout time. While we weren't completely out of the cabin until 10 minutes after 10 am, we were horrified at the male owner's behavior. First off, he walked in unannounced at 10 am on the dot. A knock or something would have been nice since I wasn't fully dressed. His only response was "It's 10 o'clock". He then proceeded to yell at us for the remaining 10 minutes until we left. If he wasn't yelling at me, he was yelling at my husband. He was yelling about how he didn't charge us a security deposit. Nothing was damaged. Nothing required more than usual cleaning. We even did all of the laundry except for sheets and a couple of towels that were used that morning. He yelled about how we didn't run the dishwasher. We never used the dishwasher! It was empty! He was carrying on as if we were children who ran into traffic.
I would like to say that his wife was much more understanding, but she was unable to reason with him either. This man was not very hospitable considering the industry he is in. Just make sure you check out on time. There is no exception! The last 10 minutes really put a damper on a great trip!
The views of the mountain range and the hiking trails were truly lovely. We could not have picked a better place!
Our first time in NC and what a delight! We loved spending time on the deck. Whether in sunny or foggy weather, in early mornings or late nights, the view was wonderful.
We shared photos and our experience with all our friends.
Rick suggested several places for hiking, dining out, or driving tips on the windy roads.
The beans and red & yellow raspberries from the Rick’s garden were terrific.
The cabin has all amenities you need and is very cozy and neat.
If you are there on Friday night – make sure to check out the Seafood and prime rib buffet at the nearby Little Switzerland lodge.
We had a wonderful stay with terrific views, winding roads, and great food. Rick was a great source of information on the area. Be sure to check out the Knife and Fork restaurant in Spruce Pine-the food and service were second to none! The cabin was comfortable and clean. Will definitely return!! Thanks Rick, loved the collard greens from your garden.
