BEAUTIFUL AND SO RELAXING

  • 5 of 5
This was our fourth stay at Colebrook Manor with friends, and I think we enjoy it each time even more than before. The house is beautiful with amazing views from every window. Yes, there are no curtains, but you do not need them, you are surrounded by woods. It is so relaxing to sit by the fireplace on cold winter day or sit outside on a warm day listening to the brook. You can go hiking right from the house along the brook, it is so beautiful. If you are looking for a real get away from the rat race, this is it.

WONDERFUL WINTER GETAWAY!

  • 5 of 5
Could not have asked for a more perfect winter getaway. House was exactly what we were looking for cozy and relaxing. The views from every room were a winter wonderland. Perfect for snow shoeing and x-country. The house was a craftsmen dream, something unique in every room. The house was well equipped with every thing we needed. Most nights spent by the fire with good food (and drink), great friends (playing cards),making wonderful memories. It was a treat to meet Andy and hear his wonderful stories of how he built this well loved house. We will absolutely return for other relaxing getaways. Deb, Lisa and gang.

GORGEOUS HIDEAWAY IN THE WOODS

  • 5 of 5
The house was perfect for our trip away with our extended family.

The grounds were beautiful and covered with a little snow when we arrived. We took a walk and there was evidence of beavers cutting down trees recently which we found amazing.

The furnishings were nice and comfortable with plenty of choices for seating. The views from each window were spectacular and picturesque - there was no need for curtains! For us, the lack of curtains was a plus since we felt it brought the outdoors inside. Everyone had a place to sleep and once we figured out the tricks of the home everyone was warm at night. The layout of the house was perfect for socializing and enjoying downtime and reading.

There was free wifi but spotty mobile phone reception - however, if you went outside the reception improved for some of us.

We used the small sauna and it was a really nice bonus for the cold winter days. The Rumford fireplace was a real treat. My son saw the Rumford fireplace featured on a "This Old House" program years ago. It kept us warm and toasty - wood and kindling was plentiful thanks to the owner Andy!

The upstairs bathroom was very spacious and ha
d a nice warm feel, with the custom woodwork and large open tub. The kitchen was well equipped - but lacked sharp knives. However, our son-in-law is a chef and luckily he brought his own knives. The kitchen had a good supply of dishes and pots and pans which we used for breakfast and dinner. Some of the teflon coated pans lost their coating so we did not use them.

Some of the people in our family are from Oregon and never spent time in Massachusetts so we toured all over Massachusetts. We drove to Amherst, Northhampton, North Adams (the Museum of Contemporary Art is a MUST)! We also stopped at Kent Falls in Kent, CT on the way up.

We left our granddaughter's boots by mistake, and Andy sent them to us by mail which was extraordinarily nice of him to go out of his way to do this!

We would love to spend some time here in the summer and coming back to this house is a definite possibility.

Owner's Response: There is a complete set of Emeril All-Clad pots and pans and a serrated knife kept in a cardboard sheath labeled "Wicked Sharp". My brother travels with a set of ceramic knives, 5 types of pepper and his own pillow, to be sure of comfort. I have been in rentals that only have dented aluminum pots and 4 spoons ! Yes there is an older bed with a smallish full size box spring that is a custom thing to replace, but has a new mattress on it. There is no housekeeping charge, so linens are personal responsibility. Previous reviewer went beyond the pale in anal cleaning without even consulting me. The cleaning girl was run ragged and could not satisfy their neurotic needs , and she couldn't iron, and she broke the oven which cost $280 to fix. They never called me . Mary and her family were always in touch and took great care of the house, as Americans do. I am very grateful for all the wonderful people who have visited Colesbrook over 15 years of renting on Homeaway. It is a unique Berkshire location worth sharing.
Thanks to all, Andy

AVOID THE PLACE

  • 1 of 5
We had to clean the house for two days, had a maid work 6 hours and buy fresh linens as well as towels… No curtains nor blinds in any rooms. Appliances were dirty - i.e. fridge, microwave, oven. Moldy spots on the sheets. Matresses from the fifties. Dust all over. Furthermore the owner was extremely incorrect with the maid that we ask and paid for directly - he took for himself all the items that we had bought and left to the maid on purposes (linens, towels, cleaning products, food…).

Location 3/5

House 2/5
The house is interesting and could be cosy but the dust, dirtiness and absence of curtains or any form of blinds is inadmissible.

Sleep quality 0/5
Beds dates from the fifties.

Cleanliness 0/5
The place was extremely dusty and dirty,

Appliances 0/5
appliances were very dirty (fridge, oven), old and not working properly

Linens and twels 0/5
Linen were extremely old, stained and moldy

Value 2/5
The low level of cleanliness, old dirty linens, dirty appliances and absence of curtains is not acceptable for a rental at this level of price.

BEAUTIFUL RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
This was the beautiful spot for the 8 of us for our yearly retreat. Plenty of space to be alone, yet together as well. Very clean. It poured rain the whole weekend, but our spirits were not dampened at all! The property is beautiful with woods to walk and a rushing river right out the side yard. When the rain paused, we sat outside. Andy was accommodating on all fronts including some great suggestions on where to eat. Kitchen is well equipped and spacious. We would love to come back!

MIXED REVIEW OF COLESBROOK MANOR

  • 2 of 5
I have a mixed review for Colesbrook Manor. The house is beautiful, and we spent the first two days doing nothing but enjoying the house and peaceful brook and ponds.

Our enjoyment, though, was dampened by the owner, Andy, who made a number of appearances during the week for various reasons, and was actually a bit confrontational during his first appearance. This set the tone for our stay, and we felt like we were being monitored.

On our last day, Andy asked to do a walkthrough of the house with us. He argued with me about the fact that he couldn't find his TV remote (we had never seen it either.) He also made us take some Christmas stockings that he insisted weren't his. Rather than argue, I just threw them away later.

The house is beautiful, and Andy has a lot to be proud of. I'm disappointed that he wasn't able to let go a little more and allow us to enjoy our stay in privacy.

Owner's Response: Your very young children were walking on top of the stone wall with no adult in sight. Stones from the wall had been tossed on the driveway. My job is to protect my million dollar property. You appeared to be messy, spaced ot people , lost keys to wit. Because of you I will no longer accwpg families with children onder 9 yrs old. As the owner I have the right to visit.my property anytime, and I always call .ahead....
