Two story oceanfront cottage, with upper and lower decks. Cottage is located directly on the waterfront with direct access to ocean and river from yard. In addition you have use of lovely private maintained sandy beach approx. 300 yards from back door. Breathtaking views of surrounding ocean bay, river, and forest. Located at end of private road on small peninsula with privacy and quiet yet 10 minute drive to shopping, interstate. Close to bike trail, parks, harbor, whaling museum and historic town center. Perfect for families.
Location is wonderful and the vistas and scenery are glorious. Morning coffee on the back deck while the tide was coming in was glorious, made even more fun by the hutch of rabbits livingin the hedgerows around the property. Neighbors we encountered on morning or early evening walks were very friendly.
However - Ugh! The house itself was dirty, and many of the furnishings were in disrepair. A shaker bench in the living room was broken - discovered that when we went to sit on it our first day there.. The furnture downstairs is filthy - really needs to be cleaned, sweat stained. The cable didn't work - service wasn't available - and the outdoor furniture was in disrepair - the bench on the deck was broken and the grill was missing a leg. You have to prop the stove up using concrete blocks in order to use it. We had to chase the owners down to get them to mail us the key - they forgot. Then we waited nearly 2 months to receive the deposit back.
We paid a premium price for the property, willingly, because we needed a place for a number of people to stay in order to attend a family wedding. We wanted a rental that wouold accomodate a couple of small family gatherings before and after the wedding. But the condition of the home and furnishings were such that it was difficult to entertain family. Would definitely recommend seeking other properties until this place get's cleaned up. We will be returning next fall to the area, but will be seeking another property. We learned our lesson on this one.
If you like peace and quiet in a Rustic setting, this cottage is for you. Spent three weeks there and look forward to returning next year.
Town of Fairhaven has lovely center with several historic Gothic style buildings that make up the town square. Founded in the 1600's it offers many interesting and historically rich learning opportunities. Sister city to New Bedford you won't want to miss a visit to the whaling museum, the fishing fleet centered in the harbor or the boat yards on the Fairhaven side of the harbor. You can catch a ferry to the islands as well. The bike trail built on an old railway runs from Fairhaven center to Mattappoisette and passes very near the cottage. The Buttonwood Zoo is also great fun for the whole family. If you want more wave action a day trip to Horseneck beach is a great outing located about 1/2 hr from the cottage.
