About Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet

On a one-week vacation to Bar Harbor in 1976, We fell in love with the Town and National Park. We signed a lease on a shop--and never returned to Boston. A frequent fantasy of visitors; We were lucky enuf to make it work. For 25 years We owned Boston Baked Beads, The Dancing Deer &The Blue Heron Shop. We grew up living sweetly in small towns, but none was as beautiful as this one.

Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet purchased this apartment in 1989

Why Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet chose Bar Harbor

While operating shops in Bar Harbor, we began searching for a retreat that would feel like it was a million miles from the happy noise and congestion of the downtown. It also needed to be of interesting construction & history. After 5 years, we found the Chalet of the Bears, deep in the woods and perched on a cliff above the Atlantic--with a private ocean beach at the foot of the cliff.

What makes this apartment unique

The Chalet of the Bears was built by a wealthy family during the 'roaring 20s'--a social peak in Bar Harbor. Experience what it is like to live for awhile in 'the house on the hill' from High Society days. Tour the main core of the Chalet and sit in the ballroom while hearing the colorful history of the mansion and its owners.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was the most fulfilling vacation we've had as far back as we can remember. It's the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. We were in search of a little solitude, and we found it here at the Chalet, down at the ocean, and in the mountains of the National Park.

ROMANTIC GET-AWAY

  • 5 of 5
Magic! Quite the romantic get-away. The chalet is extraordinary! All the beauty of Acadia nearby, then come home to your nest in the eve. Sleep in and enjoy the sounds of the hermit thrush in the trees. Wonderful hosts to help with any needs.

Great property

  • 5 of 5
We were very happy with this property. The studio was plenty of room for the two of us and our dog, with great natural light and big open windows to let in the cool winds.

The property is fantastic - huge, beautiful, and wooded. The stairway access to the beach was great to have - beach was beautiful with a lot of interesting rocks and great views.

The studio is attached to the main chalet, which is beautiful and a very interesting architectural achievement. Privacy was not an issue at all.

Overall, a great place for a couple in a great part of Maine.

What an amazing location!!

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed here the first week in October and were amazed by the location. Paul greeted us and gave us a great history lesson about the Chalet and made us feel immediately at home. The location was perfect, and the view from the Beach was worth the price of admission!! The room had everything we needed and plenty of hot water for the shower. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a secluded get away, yet 5 minutes from anything you want to do in Acadia or Bar Harbor.

Something out of a book!

  • 5 of 5
This property is great! Incredible chalet with a splendid history to match the craftsmanship. Nice layout, very private, incredible setting, with everything you need and then some.
The location is perfect for those interested in being away from the lights and noises of downtown, but close enough to scoot around by foot or bike.
The place was clean and well maintained. Cooking onsite is available (dishes provided - as were linens); although we mostly ate out because we were too tired after playing in the National Park and downtown each day.
We brought our dog - who loved the place even more than we did (if that's possible). Each morning and night we walked the staircase down to the private beach and enjoyed the solitude of the postcard view.
We'll definitely be returning.

Old world charm

  • 4 of 5
Paul and Karen were very hospitable during our stay at the chalet. It is a lovely quite space to quiet your soul and rechange as you escape to a picturesqe landscape of Bar Harbor, Maine. The chalet has a veiw of Frenchman's Bay where you can observe playful seals and romantic sunrises. The porch off the second floor provided a peaceful nook to read and reflect. The chalet was dog freindly and our puppy enjoyed daily hikes around Jordan Pond and the Bubbles at Arcadia National Park.Wildwood Stables provided a unique veiw of the park along the Carraige Road up Day Mountain. We were able to enjoy happy hour and lobster at Cherrystones in down town Bar Harbor. The Fish House Grille is worth it for the yummy lobster and the waterfront veiws of Bar Harbor. Thanks Paul and Karen for providng our home away from home.

Absolutely PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5
We felt incredibly lucky to find such a perfect spot for a Labor Day weekend retreat. It was charming and private yet close to Bar Harbor and Acadia. We enjoyed picking up wine and lobsters and bringing them home to eat on the virtually private beach front. Incredible moonlit evenings and early morning views! Everything we needed (and more!) was readily available from cookware and utensils to extra linens, blankets, etc. All was very clean and tidy! The history of the chalet itself was fascinating, especially given the personal journey Paul has taken to keep it authentic and share its story. We look forward to many happy returns!!

Owner's Response: Thanks, folks, for your kind words. So glad that you 'got' the studio and its setting. Most people do, but a few don't at all. It would be very nice to see you again.
