About Paul DeVore

On a one-week vacation to Bar Harbor in 1976, We fell in love with the Town and National Park. We signed a lease on a small shop--and never returned to Boston. A frequent fantasy of visitors; We were lucky enuf to make it work. For 25 years We owned Boston Baked Beads, The Dancing Deer &The Blue Heron Shop. We grew up living sweetly in small towns, but none was as beautiful as this one.

Paul DeVore purchased this studio in 1989
Why Paul DeVore chose Bar Harbor

While operating 2 shops in Bar Harbor, we began searching for a retreat that would feel like it was a million miles from the happy noise and congestion of the downtown. It also needed to be of interesting construction & history. After 5 years, we found the Chalet of the Bears, deep in the woods and perched on a cliff above the Atlantic--with a private ocean beach at the foot of the cliff.

ROMANTIC GET-AWAY

Magic! Quite the romantic get-away. The chalet is extraordinary! All the beauty of Acadia nearby, then come home to your nest in the eve. Sleep in and enjoy the sounds of the hermit thrush in the trees. Wonderful hosts to help with any needs.

Absolutely PERFECT!

We felt incredibly lucky to find such a perfect spot for a Labor Day weekend retreat. It was charming and private yet close to Bar Harbor and Acadia. We enjoyed picking up wine and lobsters and bringing them home to eat on the virtually private beach front. Incredible moonlit evenings and early morning views! Everything we needed (and more!) was readily available from cookware and utensils to extra linens, blankets, etc. All was very clean and tidy! The history of the chalet itself was fascinating, especially given the personal journey Paul has taken to keep it authentic and share its story. We look forward to many happy returns!!
Owner's Response: Thanks, folks, for your kind words. So glad that you 'got' the studio and its setting. Most people do, but a few don't at all. It would be very nice to see you again.

beautiful location and charming space

The Chalet of the Bears was charming - a rustic, beautiful retreat in a gorgeous part of Maine. The location is out of the busy-ness of downtown Bar Harbor yet close enough to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor to make a very convenient trip.

The Chalet apartment had everything we needed to create a relaxing week in the woods - outdoor cooking facilities, movies to watch and incredible nature. We walked down the stairs to the beach every morning and enjoyed coffee while watching the waves.

Hearing the hermit thrush in the wee hours of the morning and being able to sit with my husband on a private beach for uninterrupted time was an incredible gift.

What a delightful place to stay!

Honeymoon

My wife and I were excited to take our honeymoon to Maine and I wanted to surprise her with a special and unique place to stay near Bar Harbor. The Chalet certainly fits the bill. It is beautifully constructed and the woodwork is incredible. Our host Paul was even gracious enough to give us a tour of the entire Chalet and explain the history behind it. We loved the tranquility of 5 days surrounded by woods and the ocean (many steps down but work the trip,) We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on our balcony every afternoon with a glass of wine, a good book, and conversation. The room was very comfortable and fit all our needs well. The location cannot be beat. Being only minutes away, we got to explore Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor extensively. If we ever find ourselves returning to Bar Harbor, the Chalet is top on our list.

What A Disappointment

1 of 5
Submitted: September 13, 2010 Stayed: September 2010
My husband and I stayed at this Challet of the Bears Labor Day Week 2010, The picture of the home is very pretty but no where on the description did it state that the small studio was under the main part of the house, nor did it state that there was nothing to cook on inside of the place. Yes, there was a microwave but any other cooking had to be done outside. Upon arrival you were greeted with a bottle of wine on the kitchen table and some chocolates but then then the rest was a disaster. The kitchen/bathroom sink was in the bathroom and the shower was a PVC hook up that just didn't allow you to take a shower without holding the hand held. The studio smelled of mildew and I can't even tell you how many spider webs and dead bugs were all over the corners of the ceilings and rooms. It clearly showed me that the place had not been cleaned, aired out or maintained. The bedroom at first looked ok until I took the covers off and noticed stained sheets. The TV sat lower than the bed, which sunk in the middle so viewing the TV was a bit of a challenge. There were no ceiling fans so I have to wonder what this place was like in the hot humid weather. The grounds were not at all maintained and looking for those stairs to the beach, well good luck. You had to walk through bushes and pine trees hopefully without spraining your ankle to get to the stairs that were a very long way down. The cooking outside was a grill and a 2 burner camper stove on the outside of your studio, near more webs. The shades inside were filthy with more mosquitoes and dead bugs around the sills. To sum it up, my husband and I had to leave as it was bad and had to check into a hotel in Massachusetts. I have to wonder about the really good reviews because it clearly was not what was on the website. The parking was limited between trees and high roots. I should have been more aware something wasn't right when I asked the owner to please send pictures of the inside of the challet prior to coming and I didn't get a response. I did tell the owner that I could not possible give him a good review and what my problems with this rental were. I understand about preserving the history of the Challet but this was just plain neglect and I can not recommend it. SORRY!
Owner's Response: The great majority of visitors are enchanted by the Chalet studio. Obviously, someone occasionally hates it. This reviewer clearly didn't like the fact that we are located in the woods; though most folks like that very much. She found that trees limit the parking, that spiders spin webs, and she feared that she'd sprain her ankle reaching the stairs to the beach. Some of our other websites make it clearer in the description that the Chalet is atop a wooded ocean cliff, and the beach is at the foot of a staircase down the cliff. If this puts you off, please be forwarned. She is simply inaccurate about cooking facilities. Indoors there is a microwave, toaster and coffeemaker, plus full refrigerator/freezer. Outside are a grill and 2-burner stovetop. She is correct that there is a large divided porcelain sink in the bathroom. Most folks just brush their teeth over one side, do dishes in the other side, and get on with enjoying the national park. The shower does indeed involve a handheld shower head in the European style. She obviously found this hateful too. We don't expect to change this.
