ROMANTIC GET-AWAY

HEART STONE Northampton, MA
Review Submitted: August 1, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
Magic! Quite the romantic get-away. The chalet is extraordinary! All the beauty of Acadia nearby, then come home to your nest in the eve. Sleep in and enjoy the sounds of the hermit thrush in the trees. Wonderful hosts to help with any needs.

Dirty Pig Sty & Owner with Attitude!!! Beware!!!

Kourt Vermont
Review Submitted: May 21, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Below is an email I sent the owner upon arriving home:
Hello Paul,
If you probably haven't noticed already, my husband and I left our vacation early. We were extremely dissatisfied with the condition of our accommodations and felt it necessary to return home. I am not trying to be critical, however there are certain expectations I have when reserving a place to stay. The following things were unacceptable:
1) The room was covered in cobwebs, dust and mold; which I am severely allergic to.2) There was about an inch of dust under the bed along with an old condom package; which apparently tells me that no on has cleaned in a long time!3) Huge amounts of dust behind the bookshelves and television.4) Black mold growing on the toilet.5) A foul urine smell coming from the toilet.6) Mold covering the mirror in the bathroom and in the shower. 7) Mold in the dish drying rack.8) Shower overflows and water would not stay warm. 9) Windowsills covered in bugs and cobwebs.
10) Electrical outlet to fridge would come loose and turn off causing some of the food to get warm.11) Advertising a kitchenette, when all you have is a fridge and a microwave in the room. There is no place to prepare food.12) Cleaning our dishes in the bathroom is disgusting!
13) The deck outside the room feels like it is about collapse when walking on it.14) The stairs leading to the beach are unsafe and there are tree limbs that are obstructing a safe path to the beach. I refused to go down the stairs after seeing my husband almost fall!
15) The noise from the construction next door was unacceptable.! How is that romantic or relaxing in any way?Need I go on? There is a difference between historic and clean and historic and dirty...the Chalet was the later. I would greatly appreciate your consideration of refunding our money for the nights not spent at your residence (Wednesday night to Saturday night.) Please consider what an inconvenience this was for us to be so unhappy and uncomfortable that we would actually drive 7 hours home. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Kourtney L. B.S., R.T.(R)(CT)(ARRT)
The owners response was rude and defensive. Which I can completely understand because the truth hurts! If you would like to see his response, please email me. I am an avid traveler and have stayed in other cabins which were immaculate. Maybe he should hire a cleaning service if he can't clean himself. Also, why would we drive 7 hrs home if the place was tolerable??
Owner's Response: We responded to Kourt the same night that we received her inventory of complaints. If you request a copy of our long response from either us or Kourt, you will see that we readily owned up to a couple of problems that we would quickly have addressed if Kourt had brought them to our attention--for example, a tree blown down across the lower part of the stairs to our beach. (The tree is now gone.) Because of such valid complaints, we immediately sent her a refund of part of the fee. However, with most of her 15 complaints, I pointed out things that she clearly misperceived--for example, thinking that she saw mold more or less everywhere. The antique toilet tank was once frozen and pieced back together with a tarry-looking mastic; she declares that it is mold. The silvering on the back of the 80-year-old bathroom mirror has small areas that look shadowy or webby; she sees it as mold covering the mirror. There are dark streaks in the shower grouting caused by manganese in our well water; to her it is more mold. Aside from challenging some of her 'facts', I pointed out that in almost 20 years of rentals no one else had feared that our deck was about to collapse. And no one else thinks it is 'disgusting' to wash dishes in a dishpan located next to a bathroom sink. This obviously infuriated her and caused her to escalate her accusation to "Filthy Pig Sty!!!" I trust the thoughtful reader to decide which account seems more reasonable.
