About Almirida village

Almirida is a small pretty seaside resort to the east of the bay of Souda. Situated about 24 kilometres or 15 miles west of Chania, and is becoming more popular with package tour companies. The resort boasts an impressive crescent shaped bay, and a reasonable selection of tavernas, café bars and shops, which stretch through the village. In the evening, life revolves around the waterfront tavernas and bars,

The atmosphere is more low key than many of the more well known resorts. Located up the hill and about a 10 minute walk from the beach, is the village of Plaka. Popular for its superb views of the bay of Souda and the White Mountains. The nearby village of Kalives can be reached along a pathway 4km away, where you will find a wider variety of tavernas, shops and a bank.

Not so long ago Almirida was a fishing village and a weekend retreat for Greeks visiting from Chania. Over the past few years Almirida has slowly grown into a small resort with an expanding number of villas, apartments and quite a few small family run hotels. Despite this change, it has remained popular with Greeks and many still use it for their weekend breaks. Almirida maintains a laid back, family-friendly atmosphere - very different from the notorious brash resorts such as Malia.

In the village you will find several mini markets as well as 2 bakeries and an excellent fresh fruit and vegetable shop (The Pear Tree). The wooded countryside behind Almirida is some of the most beautiful in Crete and a walkers paradise, especially in April and May when its not too hot and the spring flowers are on show. Mountain bikes can be hired locally. There is also a reasonable bus service if you wish to venture further.

This small seaside village has two gently shelving sandy beaches backed in places with waterside tavernas. Both beaches are safe for children and there are sun beds for rent. There is also a windsurfing school on the beach.

Guestbook comments from the manager
Hi John

We loved our stay and it suited the 20 somethings as well as the over 60's! Right distance from village but near enough to walk, will have to save up in order to return.

Please thank everyone for making the villa so welcoming and clean etc.

EXCELLENT VILLA IN A GREAT LOCATION

  • 4 of 5
The villa is only 7 minutes walk from the very small town and the beach of Almyrida. This allowed my daughters a good deal of independence and meant that we had easy access to shops and some good restaurants. Plenty to do in the surrounding area too. Car hire from AutoClub, as suggested, was flexible and good value. The villa itself was clean and well equipped and the team who maintain it and the pool were really helpful. Though it's only a short distance from town, it feels quite rural, which we liked. I'm happy to recommend it and look forward to returning

LOVELY VILLA AND GREAT LOCATION

  • 4 of 5
We has a very enjoyable week in villa Amadeus. The property was perfectly situated for our needs. The villa was well equipped and maintained and had a good size swimming pool. The balconys and terrace were an added bonus as we could appreciate the lovely views. john the owner was helpful throughout the whole process even when we got ourselves locked out! The resort was lovely, good restaurants, a perfect beach and wonderful for swimming. We would recommend this villa to friends and family and hope to return. All in all a wonderful weeks holiday.

GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY, LOVELY LOCATION

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I stayed at Villa Amadeus for 10 nights from mid to late May and had a great holiday. This was our second time at Almyrida (we stayed in a different villa about 6 years ago). We really liked the location, set among the olive groves, it was very peaceful and had beautiful views. It was slightly away from the main hustle of Almyrida, whilst still being an easy stroll to the beach and tavernas. The villa was very comfortable and equipped with everything we needed. We didn’t use the BBQ but we did cook some simple meals in the kitchen and it had all we needed. The pool was great – big enough to swim properly although still quite cool at this time of year, and the garden full of fruit and vibrant flowers. There were a couple of small things which, if addressed, would have made the stay close to perfect – in particular putting a voile or curtain in the bedrooms for privacy and having more comfortable furniture on the balconies. Overall, we felt the villa was good value for money and will definitely consider going back or recommending it to others. If you do go to Almyrida, then definitely go the the Lagos Taverna on the edge of the village - fantastic home cooked food.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that the garden stood out. Our local manager, Mark, puts a great deal of effort into keeping the garden looking good. I will make sure that he knows so he will keep up the good work

NICE, PEACEFULL VILLA, CLOSE TO AMENITIES.

  • 4 of 5
Villa Amadeus is a spacious, well kept villa in large grounds. It is next to one other villa, and although we had no neighbours when we stayed, I would imagine that it would remain fairly private when both occupied.
The pool man visited a couple of times, and the towels/linen were changed duing our stay-apart from that we were not interupted-just how we like it!
Any negatives? The villa would benefit from a safe. A chair on each bedroom balcony would be great for your morning cup of tea but that's it.
The beds were comfortable & clean. We did not cook there once so I can't comment on the kitchen facilities but it looked fairly adequate.
The town is only a a few minutes walk down the road and Almyrida offers enough for most people. It was fairly quiet when we were there but still plenty to do, lots of tavernas, sports bars, cafes, mountain bike hire, car hire etc. The beach is very nice with gently shelving sand.
I would recommend this villa & resort to friends and I would return again.

Owner's Response: The reviewer is correct that the villa is very private even when the villas next door is occupied. This is due to the layout of the 2 villas.

PERFECT VILLA, SUPERB LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
We spent 10 fantastic days at Villa Amadeus. The villa is incredibly well equipped, we had our 9 month old daughter with us, and it had everything we needed. Lovely large pool, modern spacious interior and sun on the terrace all day long, as well as aircon in all the rooms. The Villa is not overlooked, is in a quiet area, and the pool has plenty of privacy.
Villa Amadeus is located in an olive grove a short walk from Almyrida where you have a choice of tavernas serving fresh fish and grilled meat, right on the beach, lovely shallow sandy-bottomed sea - perfect for families, and a choice of mini-markets and a delicious bakery. The walk takes about 7 mins and is fairly flat (which is unusual for Crete!).
Car hire isn't essential, as everything you need is within walking distance, but we did rent one and it was worthwhile to explore other parts of the region, and secluded coves.
I would definitely recommend Villa Amadeus (we've already suggested it to friends!), and hope to spend another family holiday there in the future.

Nearby: Good swimming at Almirida Beach. Scuba/Snorkelling and boat trips from the beach. There is also a . windsurfing school. Walking galore! Easy tracks straight from the door. Spectacular countryside with breathtaking views of White Mountains from villa & all bedroom terraces. Sea Fishing - tackle shop in nearby Kalives. The White Mountains dominate the area and provide a dramatic backdrop to the sandy beaches at Almirida, Kalives and Georgeoupolis. The Apokoronas area is also well known for its traditional inland villages such as Vamos, Kefalas, Plaka and Kokkino Chorio - location for the film 'Zorba The Greek'.

The large bay that makes up the seaside resorts of Almirida and Kalives has many separate, safe, sandy beaches, usually with full facilities. Almirida, is a thriving seaside resort with tavernas and bars lining the sea front. There are a couple of mini-markets, a bakery, patisserie, a wine shop and newsagents.

Mountain bikes can be hired and there is also a small taxi rank. There is a bus service to Kalives & Chania.

Kalives is a nearby larger village along the coast.. In addition to the beaches, tavernas, bars & tourist shops there are local shops plus a good-sized supermarket (IN.KA). Banking, post office and petrol station are available.

Chania - a cosmopolitan city voted the most beautiful on Crete. With the White Mountains as a backdrop, its Venetian harbour, museums, fascinating indoor market & an old quarter of narrow streets packed with interesting shops, Chania offers something for most visitors. It is a vibrant place steeped in Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish history. The harbour area is a great place to sit & watch the world go by at one of the sea-front tavernas.

Charter Flight time 4 hours from UK airports to Chania (1/2 hour drive) or Heraklion (2 hour drive). We can also advise on reliable local car hire at reasonable cost with good English speaking staff..
