Big Bear Cabin...The setting is a beautiful hardwood forest in the charming Smoky Mountain area just outside of Murphy, North Carolina. There is easy access from Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Asheville. A paved road just outside of town leads you to this lovely area where the trees are tall, and the air is clean and crisp.
This cabin is 1700 square feet with a floor to ceiling rock fireplace and hardwood floors. There are two bedrooms with pillow top queen size beds and a queen sleeper sofa in the spacious loft for your comfort. Big Bear Cabin is light and airy with cathedral ceiling and a carport for your convenience. Central heat and air, ceiling fans, and gas logs will keep you comfortable in all seasons.
From this comfortable and spacious cabin you can go rafting, kayaking, or fishing on the Nantahala River, pontooning or canoeing on the pristine high country Nantahala Lake. Take a hike on the Appalachian Trail or enjoy a concert or class at the John C. Campbell Folk School. And for leaf watchers, the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness Area is not to be matched. Search for antiques and have lunch in one of the small, quaint mountain communities. When you're tired and home for the day, kick back to watch a great movie on your 42 inch Flat Screen TV or simply relax on the porch with your favorite book. Breathe the fresh mountain air and let your spirit soar.
This home is very comfortable and in perfect condition. The property is very clean with every appliance and utensil you could need. The gas fireplace was perfect for a December visit. Access was good and you are minutes to Murphy. The owners were very kind and responsive. Large wrap around deck, new gas grill and a good TV to watch FSU's ACC Championship made staying at home pleasant.
I just returned from staying at this cabin. It is very nice! Exceptionally clean, exceptionally stocked, and very large are the three qualities that really stand out to me. It has a paved road all the way to the driveway, and while the neighborhood road is a little steep, it was no problem with three sports cars that our group had for our visit. One car was on a trailer being pulled by a 2WD Tacoma, and it had no problem pulling up the road. The road is very short to get to the cabin once you get to the neighborhood also (maybe about 1/4 mile). Anyway, I am probably going on a little too much about the access, it is really no big deal. The cabin itself is very large, and comfortable. There is an easy to turn on gas fireplace (just turn on the switch on the black box), and the kitchen is very large for a rental cabin. The gas grill was clean, easy to ignite, and cooked our steaks perfectly! This location is excellent also, with easy access to Murphy, Blairsville, and Blue Ridge. I rented the cabin to enjoy some mountain driving with a few friends, and the location is pretty much in the middle of the best driving roads in the country.
The bedrooms are nice and roomy, and the two baths are also pretty large. There is a laundry setup (although we did not use it) that looks pretty new, and there are three large deck areas to enjoy the outdoors. Compared to some other cabins I have rented, this one is located in a very quiet area, and the construction also keeps the sleeping areas quiet, so you are ready to enjoy your vacation after a good night's sleep.
The cabin is a great value, and I would expect that I will be back to rent this cabin again!
I spent a month here in this gorgeous home and wanted for nothing. The owners have done everything to make this a wonderful vacation getaway. I could go on and on, but to me this really says it all.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at this beautiful cabin. We explored the area every day, enjoyed hiking at Dry Falls, checked out the Hiwassee Dam, panned for gems, visited Fields of the Wood, and never got tired of the breathtaking mountain scenery, especially going through areas like Nantahala Gorge and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Pros: Absolutely beautiful cabin, spotless and clean, fully stocked with just about anything you could want. It has a modern feel with charming rustic decor, and plenty of room inside and out for relaxing. The fireplace was lovely, and the gated porch/deck was great for our service dog. The neighbors were quiet, it's far enough from town to feel remote, yet Walmart is only about 15 minutes away. We loved being able to do our own laundry, and lastly, the owners were friendly and easy to work with.
Cons: Be ready for bugs and creepy crawlies. We encountered spiders, wasps, and even a scorpion inside the cabin, so be alert! The shower had very little water pressure, but that was a minor annoyance. While the area was relatively quiet, it wasn't as isolated/private as we'd hoped for (we didn't realize until after we'd booked, that there were other houses nearby, including a neighbor directly across the road). Murphy is a very remote town, we had to drive typically 1-2 hours each way to reach our daily site seeing destinations, so be prepared to either stay in the cabin or do lots and lots of time in the car. The driveway going up to the cabin is very steep and narrow, and has blind hills and curves, which was harrowing, but thankfully we didn't encounter any other vehicles during our stay. Lastly, and this is not the owner's fault, but the next set of guests AND the cleaning lady both showed up before we had left the cabin on our last morning (this was about 10:30am) and the guests were extremely rude and indignant that they couldn't have the cabin immediately. The cleaning lady was very nice and understanding, however. We weren't given a check out time, and had planned to be out by 11:00am, which we were.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay, the cabin itself is gorgeous and big, with plenty of room and things to do (DVD's, books, rockers on the porch). The negatives that we encountered were mostly minor and did not outweigh the positives! If you're looking for a quiet, spacious cabin getaway where you can spend your days relaxing by the fireplace or sitting on the deck listening to the birds, this is your cabin!
The cabin was perfect and the location terrific. We took motorcycles to tour the mountains. This place was perfect. Not difficult to get in and out of with the bikes, which was something we really appreciated. It is snuggled in nice and cozy. It is a perfect getaway place. We had a wonderful time and would deffinitely go there again. Very clean and well furnished.
Clean, modern, wonderful cabin. This place is great. We had a party of six and we were all comfortable here. The cabin is in the perfect location to do a gazillion things. It was stocked with essentials upon arrival. Very clean with a beautiful wrap around porch in a very quiet spot. I love this whole area and am sad we will be parting ways in the morning. I would certainly recommend this property to any family or friends that would like to visit the Nantahala Forest. We had the most exceptional day trips. Franklin is right down the road if you want to gem mine and it's only about 30 miles to the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. If you want to White Water Raft the Nantahala River and the Ocoee are very close. We went to the Cradle of Forestry and Sliding Rock one day. We did Brasstown Bald and High Shoals Recreation Area. We went to Wayah Bald and visited the Joyce Kilmer Forest. We drove the Cherohala Skyway. The kids swam in Lake Blue Ridge and Chatuge Lake. I can't even begin to list all the wonderful things there are to do that are within reasonable driving distance to this cabin. We love this place and will visit again the next time we come to Murphy!! Thanks!!!
