Ourique House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, sleeps 6

This delightful renovated schoolhouse is set within its own walled garden and has lovely views of the tree covered hillsides. It is a very light and airy house-the original windows were replaced to their original size letting lots of light flood into this house. It has central heating making it suitable for year round lets. It has everything needed for an enjoyable holiday from its spacious terrace around the pool where there are sun loungers, shade provided by a pergola and large parasol and another pergola under which sits a dining table and 6 chairs. A gas bbq for great outdoor cooking, enjoying the beautiful sunsets and fabulous night skies-there is no light pollution here. The open plan lounge dining kitchen has seating for 6, satellite tv, DVD and WiFi a well equipped kitchen and dining table and chairs for 6 completes the picture. There is a family bathroom and 3 bedrooms one of which has an en-suite shower room. All of the bedrooms have fitted wardrobes.

The Alentejo is a very unspoilt ,undiscovered area of Portugal. It has so much to offer interesting countryside that changes with the seasons-rolling hills dotted with cork oak trees, olive groves. Fields of wild flowers in the spring, flat plains that are golden in the summer heat. There are lakes that offer great fishing opportunities- The Barragem da Rocha is only 10 minutes drive away. There are vineyards that can offer tours and tastings-some great red wines!Walkers will love this region you can walk for miles along tracks that meander through gentle rolling hills and light dappled eucalyptus forests or why not try the new Rota Vicentina a new waymarked walk along the natural park of the Alentejan coast. White washed villages and towns offer history-Serpa with its Roman aqueduct or Beja with its castle and Tile museum.

The West coast of the Alentejo has some stunning beaches and resorts. Try Vila Nova da Milfontes [it was recently mentioned in the Sunday Times travel supplement]with its safe bathing along the estuary beach, Milfontes has a number of restaurants serving good seafood.

The Algarve with its beaches and golf courses is not far away-a 50minute drive to the closest.Horse riding ,quad biking, fishing and even hot air ballooning are available locally.

Ourique with its good supermarket ,banks atm, cafes, restaurants is only a 10minute drive.

There will be a complimentary hamper for you when you arrive-containingamongst other things local eggs and soft goats cheese- if you would like more during your stay let our housekeeper know-its not very expensive. She is also available during your stay for extra cleaning/laundry for a small charge. If there are any problems during your stay she is at the end of a mobile to help should you need it.

There is an information folder in the house about local restaurants, places to visit, and activities.

We have another property locally-less than 5 minutes drive-Monte Novo dos Cachorros-it sleeps 8-10 people if there is a very big party book the 2 can be booked together.

Pam and Ivor H [Wales] stayed 30/09-13/10/12

Had a fabulous 2 weeks in this pretty schoolhouse.Very quiet and relaxing and ideal for just watching the world go by or in our case watching the varied birdlife from the patio-Griffon Vultures, Red Kite, various warblers and pretty Azure winged Magpie to name a few.

Walking from the doorstep and a trip to the Western beaches a must.

Escola has everything, was spotlessly clean and very cpmfortable.

Definitely recommended

Arrived to find a really lovely, well presented, very clean villa. It has everything that you need for a wonderful relaxing holiday. The pool is excellent, especially for children as you can see them from the lounge. Maxine was extremely helpful and as she is from Bury, UK there wasn't any language barriers, so she was really useful to find out anything you needed to know. Everything is in the villa that you need. The local supermarket Pingo Doce is well stocked and we found it very reasonably priced. It's approximately 7 miles there but the drive is really pleasant with a much appreciated cafe stop next door to it. If you think you can hear constant wind chimes, don't worry, it's the local herd of sheep who wander the fields that you can see from the villa as they wear little cow bells. It's wonderful waking up, going out to the patio for breakfast with stunning views and the gentle melody of cowbells tinkling away in the background. It's a tonic for relaxation. However, a car is completely necessary otherwise you would be cut off from everywhere and there is so much to visit. There is a large gas barbecue which is wonderful for the lazy warm evenings on the patio. For star lovers, it's paradise as the sky is beautiful at night. It's approximately one hour to Albufeira in the Algarve and also to the West Coast for the stunning beaches. I know that we sound like we should be on commission but it genuinely is a really, really lovely place. The only down side is it's slight isolation so if you are a couple, family etc looking for entertainment close by then it's maybe not for you.

Owner's Response: Thank you Karen for your great review and for booking your return visit next year!! . Maxine is making sure that the house is kept clean and is so helpful to all our guests- it helps that she is bilingual and has lived in the Alentejo with her Portuguese husband for many years. The Escola is in a small hamlet but its so accessible to the West coast and the beautiful countryside of the Alentejo with its interesting places to visit.
If you want a relaxing holiday with the option of "days out" then back to the house for the marvellous sunsets a BBQ and a glass or two of wine-- then this is the place for you. We have 24 hr WiFi and UK TV which always helpsi when you have children- if you can get them out of the pool!!!

I was lucky to have the chance to spend 12 wonderful Alentejo spring weeks in this superb house with its magnificent green surroundings.

For my purpose as a leisure and study retreat, with occasional family and friends visiting, the house held everything needed for even a long term household - all in excellent condition and at well-above average standard for any holiday house.

The inspiring wide open rolling hill landscape with the cork oaks and the olive groves, scattered with old style traditional farming 'montes' - all accessible from the very doorstep with numerous alternative hiking routes, contributed magnificently to the calm atmosphere I was seeking this time. Located conveniently for access to the Atlantic coast as well as the exciting inland - and the Algarve and Lisbon for that matter - adds even more to its suitability even for longer stays.

The people around must be mentioned too, form the friendly local neighbours and the fabulous local bar, to the never pausing excellent service by Maxine and Arturo - and of course the very conscious kind caring attention from the Landlady Pam and her husband John.

This space in paradise is truly recommendable! Thank you!

Owner's Response: Thank you Lars for your generous review- I am so pleased that you mentioned the excellent service that Maxine and Arturo provide- its very reassuring for guests holidaying at the Escola to know that there is someone at the end of a phone to help should any problems occur. The Alentejo has worked it's magic on you and I hope you will visit again. You'll see a limited amount in the travel pages on the Alentejo region. But it's a haven of peace and quiet, sleepy villages, interesting towns and lovely people; an hour or so from the Algarve, but a world away. And this beautiful converted schoolhouse is surely the perfect base from which to explore. We spent a gloriously relaxing month here, sunning on the patio and swimming in the beautiful pool. Our kids (11 and 13), both of whom are no strangers to the xBox, were never bored and loved the slow days of breakfast, swim, lounging, reading, swimming again, lunch, dinner and swimming (not necessarily in that order).

The house is exactly as described, and much more: it's spotlessly clean, beautifully furnished, bright and airy throughout, and with everything one might want by way of equipment and utensils (a massive fridge to chill beer and wine to perfection!). Moreover, while only a few hundred metres from the road to Ourique, there's a real sense of space: the house sits in its own land, surrounded by fields and a few other houses, with lovely views that change throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.

Pam, the owner, was a pleasure to work with in planning the holiday and, in Ourique, Maxine and Artur were immensely helpful local guides. We absolutely loved it! And those sunsets are stunning

Owner's Response: Michael,
Thanks for the great review,I am so glad that you all enjoyed the holiday,I know from my communications with you that you also had some great days out in Lisbon,Evora,Beja and the West coast. I have tried to make sure that the house is equipped well ,there is nothing worse than finding you don't have enough dishes or a decent BBQ. I hope you will come back and see us in the future.Pam

Peace, tranquillity - what more could you want? We arrived worn out, jaded and in need of plenty of R&R. We thought we knew what to expect as the property had been recommended but we were in for a surprise.
The setting was fantastic with panoramic views over the countryside and the accommodation was superb with every whim catered for, even down to fly screens on all windows and doors and a great open plan living area with a kitchen to die for.

Outside, the terrace and the pool are spacious with plenty of quality furniture and there is ample shade which is needed as the terrace is south facing.
Best of all is the wild life - you can sit all day watching the storks, eagles, kingfishers and the swifts which line up to drink out of the pool.
On days out, try to get to the gypsy market at Vila Nova de Milfontes which is a real experience or try lunch in Porta Cova . Beja has a good range of shops and if you are in need of culture try Evora which is a world heritage site. The beaches on the west coast are straight out of the travel brochures or if you prefer the golf on the Algarve it is only an hour down the road..

All in all a fantastic break. The Schoolhouse was spotless, the welcoming pack delicious and the maintainance of the villa was second to none. We had a problem with the pool on arrival but within half an hour English speaking help was on hand and the problem was rectified.
We first holidayed on the Algarve 30+ years ago. The Alentejo is what the Algarve was then - real Portugal.
We will certainly be looking to go back next year.

If you looking for a place to rest from your busy daily life, and want to enjoy your time off the best way possible, there isn't a better place than this house. The house is situate in a remote area of Alentejo, near Coruche, with all the amenities you need just a couple Km’s from the house. The house itself as everything you need, from nice bedrooms, good bathroom's, to a very impressive kitchen, well equipped, with a large fridge, for those bottles of beer, to an magnify swimming pool. We spend nearly 2 weeks there, and hope to come back soon. The scenario is great, surround by these beautiful hills, where you can spend the day, just relaxing watching them. If you are looking for some beach fun, the coast isn't to far from the house. Everything was immaculate clean, the inside and outside, every now and them, someone would come up to check the pool, if need it to be clean, or if needed of any maintenance. Overall, we have to admit, it was probably one of our best holidays. The perfect place to rest, read a book, swimming, drink a couple beers, and relax, with no noise, no neighbors (the closest one probably 300 meters away). Best part, woke up early, have breakfast on the terrace and ear and see the cows pasturing in the nearby hills, a perfect scenario for calm and relax. The house is exactly as described, and the BBQ was great…in fact, we used it every day..:) All furniture was of good quality, and even outside, the terrace was great, with a nice table and chairs. I would recommend this place to anyone, that is looking for a place to rest with kids or without. Thank you for offering such a nice place for holidays.
