On an enclosed bay south of Camden on Coastal Route 1, Rockland is a central waypoint for travelers. Landing ports and ferries to and from Northhaven and Vinalhaven Islands are available. Rockland is surrounded by bays, peninsulas, rivers, lakes, and inlets. The Midcoast exhibits tremendous natural beauty. If you're looking for the authentic Maine experience, this is it. The Rockland-Thomaston area is the entry point to Penobscot Bay, perhaps the most scenic body of water on the eastern seaboard. Here you'll find islands, historic lighthouses, and protected harbors filled with working lobster boats. Ospreys and bald eagles nest along the rugged shores, puffins make the islands their home, and harbor seals make their annual pilgrimage to quiet coves. While nature is at the core, hospitality is the rule of the day. Here you'll find outstanding restaurants and galleries and first-class museums. This is the Lobster Capital of the World and home to the country's largest windjammer fleet.

Awesome Waterfront Cottage with all amenities

Lisa Fein Plant City, FL
Review Submitted: January 8, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2009
We were blown away at the view when we arrived at this quaint cottage. The cottage was immaculate, and the kitchen is extremely well equipped. We were surprised at how many attractions were so close to this area. We had a very fun filled week. Leslie and Gordon could not have been more accommodating. We were told of a beautiful sand beach about a 5 minute wooded walk from the cottage and what a treasure! We hunted for sea glass and even did a little swimming. We had brought a picnic with us and had a scruptuous buffet on the beach! Our days started out with a blueberry muffin and a cup of coffee on the deck, watching the lobstermen hauling in their catch. One lazy afternoon, I took my book down to the shore in front of the cottage and lounged in the sun on my lawn chair. What a beautiful place for a midnight bonfire. On our one foggy day, we found puzzles, games, and were surprised that the sattelite TV had the pay stations, so we had plenty to do. One day, I asked Leslie where I could get lobsters and, low and behold, her husband is a lobsterman, and brought lobsters right to our door. He even gave us a lesson on eating them. Here is a wrap up of our day excursions: Mount Batty (beautiful views), Ferry ride to Monhegan Island, shopping in Camden (and saw the Windjammer ships), the Farnsworth Art Museum (Andrew Wyeth central), and here is a list of the many lighthouses we visited (Owls Head Light, Marshall Point, Pemaquid, and our furthest adventure to Acadia National Park and the Bass Harbor Light). Wow, what a week. We will be back. Overall, it was our best Maine vacation ever!!!

A very relaxing stay

Peter & Wendy Virginia
Review Submitted: September 11, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
The cottage is small and cozy, just the right size for the two of us and our large dog. A well equipped kitchen, many lobsters, and a bbq grill make for a good week. We appreciate Gordon's lobster steaming lesson and were able to fly solo the second time around without a hitch. Only thing to get used to was the spiral staircase to the bedroom upstairs; no pets allowed upstairs so pooch had to sleep downstairs without us. A minor inconvenience.

Each day we took a walk in the morning around the island. Shell beach is small but nice and quiet. No need to worry about cars on the dirt roads and the neighbors were friendly. We never did make it to the Lobster Lane Bookshop when it was open but it looks interesting for at least a browse.

Further afield there are some state parks nearby. The Farnsworth Museum (Rockland) is worth an afternoon, and Camden (north or Rockland) is nice for a walk though I get the impression it's overrun with tourists on the weekend. The local eateries are good though some are overpriced. Bar Habor and Acadia National Park are a two hour drive on US-1, makes for a long day-trip if you don't start early.

The Waterworks Pub in Rockland has outdoor seating but said dogs were not allowed on the deck. In Bar Harbor we were able to eat outside at Rupununi with our pooch; another place (Parkside Restaurant) welcomes dogs on their patio as well.

We should have planned a ferry ride to Canada or at least some of the islands off the coast. Not sure if dogs are welcome.

All in all we enjoyed our stay in Spruce Head and plan to do it again next year.

We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent in Spruce Head. As you know, the weather did not cooperate, but even so the cottage was wonderful. Th eview is phenomenal, and the cottage is extremely well-equipped.

It was wonderful to have dogs around again. They are so well behaved and friendly. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone. We hope to see you again next summer.

Leslie and Gordon,
Julie and I had the best time staying at your place. We loved it and hope to return soon. We cried when we left as it was truly a stressfree home away from home. Thanks so much for your help and advice on places to eat, etc. We loved every minute and thank you for your hospitality. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful place and we really lucked out with the beautiful weather. Hope your reunion goes well. Take care, Christi

Leslie & Gordon,
Thank you so much for your hospitality. Spruce Head Island is beautiful and the view from the cottage is spectacular. We had a great time and so did our dogs. Thank you for accomodating them. Otter loved following Gray around and they really enjoyed our morning walks along the shore in front of the cottage. Special thanks to Gordon for our fantastic lobster dinner. Can't tell you how much we enjoyed it.
All our best,
Chris, Jerry, Emmett, Otter & Jack Smith
Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your visit. Thanks for sharing. Hope to see you again next year!
