About Lynn Lawton

I am a part-time tutor of English for international students at a university. I have many friends abroad, and my son's family live in Colorado in the US. I live in Surrey in a small 18th century cottage. My interests are nature and the environment, history, house renovation, music, walking and gardening.

Lynn Lawton purchased this house in 1970

Why Lynn Lawton chose Melton

My parents bought this house in 1970 when my father's work (international educational bookseller) required him to move to the Midlands. My son spent all his school holidays there when he was growing up. After my mother died in 2008 I decided to renovate the property and retain some of the furniture, books and other items that had been used when my parents lived there.

What makes this house unique

This house has a calm and happy atmosphere and gets the sun in the kitchen in the morning and in the sitting room in the afternoon. When the weather is not so kind it is cosy and comfortable and there is a log fire too. There is also a proper dining room- the house is traditional and elegant but also spacious and unfussily furnished. The countryside is good for walks and bike rides and there are plenty of places to visit. Nottingham is about 40 minutes drive away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We all had a lovely time. ....with dry and bright weather we were outdoors most of the time. Stilton, pork pies, fresh strawberry scones, cycling at Rutland Water and a stroll along the canal. A great extended weekend!

A home from home relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5
We were just delighted with our stay at 1 The Green. The cottage is very well kept, clean bright and airy. During our time there we wanted for nothing, all that we needed was in the house so we just had to provide our food and drink. The bedrooms are spacious and beds are comfortable. The kitchen worked well for our family and we didn't have any concerns over the size of the cooker! A travel cot with mattress, stair gate and high chair were available for us to use for which we were very grateful.
The location is lovely, a quiet village with a good play area for our children, one of whom was thrilled with all the tractors going by due to the harvest. The tea rooms in the village is also really nice. We managed to get to the National Space Centre in Leicester in 45 minutes and travel into Nottingham by train from Bottesford is easy, plenty of free parking. We travelled into Grantham for supermarkets was easy and took around 15 minutes.
Lynn was quick to respond to our enquiry and able to provide and information that we needed and made booking a quick and simple process.
We would happily recommend staying here and hope to make a return visit.

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5
It was under very sad circumstances that we rented the Cottage on the Green. Upon our arrival, I was immediately filled with a sense that I was home and the Cottage became a safe house that we filled with joy and love for all of those that spent many sunny evenings with us. It was the perfect venue for the funeral and reception and our friends that live in the area enjoyed many evenings with us around the dining table. The Cottage is spacious, well equipped and warm and welcoming. We look forward to returning there sometime int he near future.

A welcoming atmosphere!

  • 5 of 5
This property has family history but has also been carefully updated; warm and welcoming in winter, we could see it will also be relaxed and enjoyable in summer. The decoration is contemporary but with a pleasant mix of family antiques which give a homely atmosphere and visual charm.
The house was spotlessly clean, with plentiful facilities - there was plenty of information available, but no bossy signs reminding you you are "only renting"!
The owner was helpful and easy to contact, and I would happily recommend this as a family holiday home, or perfect getaway for a couple. It is conveniently situated for many activities and for visiting Grantham, Nottingham, Lincolnshire and Belvoir. The village setting is very quiet, so although it is only a short distance from other houses, you enjoy a feeling of seclusion without being isolated. Bedrooms are pretty, with nice beds and plenty of storage!
Our sole quibble is that, with a lovely dining room and handsome kitchen, there is a very basic small electric cooker - one of the pleasures of self-catering is to enjoy cooking and not having to go out to eat every evening ... I think it would be a struggle to cook for a family, especially without a dishwasher. However, the charm of this house makes this seem a very mean quibble!!

Perfect cottage

  • 5 of 5
Our family of six (four kids 10 and under) stayed in this beautiful cottage for one month in October. We had such a wonderful time in Muston, we would go back in a second. The small village of Muston is to small for much in the way of pubs but does have one tea house, which we never frequented, and one carvery, for the meat and potatoes type. Two miles away is a larger village (Bottesford) with a few pubs, nice Indian restuarant, produce vendors, pizza, a library, a cafe, among other gems. You can walk to the town by only crossing one busy highway, which was very fun. The cottage was very homey and comfortable, with a large kitchen, warm bathroom, and plenty of linens. One bathroom has a large fancy bathtub that the kids enjoyed. The house was clean and we didn't miss any comforts of home. The TV is small, but who wants to watch TV in the English countryside. Lynn was most hospitable, helping when questions arose and having plenty of tea on arrival. She even volunteered to have a neighbor buy some basics on arrival, due to it being a Sunday evening and no shops being open. Lots of walking trails around, horses and sheep to see. This cottage bring the best of memories. Highly recommended.

Relaxing week

  • 5 of 5
My family and I had a lovely week in Murston, the house was situated in a lovely village ideal for peaceful walks, but also central enough for days out, we visited Cadburys world in Birmingham, and saw Starlight Express in Nottingham. The village had its own tea rooms and a carvery pub ideal for cheap meals. The house itself had every thing we needed and more, and communication between the owner and ourselves was excellent. Highly recommend.

Located in the Vale of Belvoir, overlooked by Belvoir Castle, 1 the Green is situated at the side of an ancient village green with a market cross. The village is just off the A1, the main north south road in England, near the village of Bottesford and the market town of Grantham. There is a pub and a tea-room in the village, and a 13th century church.

It's a great place to explore rural England. We recommend walks along the local canal or cycling to villages with pubs and churches to visit.

Don't forget to visit the house where Margaret Thatcher was born in Grantham! You can also make an appointment to visit the birthplace of an even more famous person, Sir Isaac Walton, at Woolsthorpe Manor. There are other historic places to visit such as Belvoir Castle and Belton House, which are nearby. You can also visit Lord Byron's home at Newstead Abbey. Nottingham, which has test matches and a Robin Hood centre, is about 40 minutes away by car. Grantham has a Saturday market, and not far away, the Burghley Horse Trials. There are ancient and beautiful cathedrals and towns a pleasant drive away, and details of everything can be found at the house, plus wireless internet for you to do some research.

Local products include Melton Mowbray pork pies, fresh vegetables and the famous blue Stilton cheese, and there is a fish and chip shop and restaurants in Bottesford a short distance away.

1 the Green is especially popular with families. Both children and older people enjoy the peacefulness of the area and the calm and friendly atmosphere of the house. The house is often used by people who want to go away to meet up with relatives or celebrate an anniversary.
