My husband, two children and I vacationed for a week in this lovely cabin in the southern Adirondacks during the peak fall foilage season of 2009. This cabin is a wonderful getaway for small families and/or friends. Rustic, but not too rustic with propane fueled lanterns, hot water and even a refrigeration system. We were surprise attacked by cooler temperatures than expected, but the wood-burner kept things snug and warm for our nightly round of family charades, puzzles and general relaxation. The owners are very unobtrusive and give you carte blanche on the property while you are there with guest books outlining good leads on excursions and secret spots you might not otherwise hear about. Our number one recommendation is the Adirondack Museum, which is described as the Smithsonian of the Adirondack's and does not disappoint. Thank you for a great family getaway in a clean, quiet and lovely environment. The only reason I didn't rate this "excellent, five stars" was because the weather was quite bad the entire time, which obviously has nothing to do with the cabin and it's comforts and cannot be helped.
From the moment we arrived we had a fantastic time.
This private little magickal cottage was a perfect place for our family vacation
Extremely clean and very well maintained
You can truly unplug
We enjoyed watching the otters in the pond, had a family of turkeys visit us a s well
We booked for next year!
My husband and I have never used HomeAway before and I was a bit reluctant at first. Thankfully, this cabin was far beyond our expectations! It was very easy to email back/forth with the owner as I had questions, and she made it very easy to check in and check out without ever having to schedule anything. My husband and I saw her and her husband out and about at their own home, but they never bothered our quiet time. We were very impressed by how easy it was to go without electric as there was still hot water, a fridge, and a stove. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
I was looking for a place to get away from it all, and this was the perfect place to do so. If you were to look up "idyllic" in the dictionary there easily could be a photo from this place next to it.
The house has all the offerings you could want in a mountain retreat. Electricity is not missed, and the propane lamps work great when needed. The property is very clean and well maintained. Very much enjoyed spending time on the wraparound porch, staring at the pond and listening to the sound of a nearby waterfall. House itself is very cozy, great wood and metal work add nice creative touches around the place. The main bedroom upstairs with the skylight and overlooking view of the pond makes for a fantastic place to wake in the morning.
Nearby: recommend taking hike to see Auger Falls. They were really cranking the day we went, so there's one benefit to the rain the day we arrived. Also, Mountain Memories Cafe is super close for delicious breakfast or lunch.
If you're someone who needs to be checking their phone every 2 minutes this might not be the place for you. (No cell service for AT&T, but you will get reception about 20 minutes south). However, if you're looking for a place to unplug and enjoy nature in a beautiful quiet setting, this would be a wise pick.
I would highly recommend and plan on returning soon!!!
If you're looking for a peaceful and quiet place to unwind, recharge and just BE, then this is a wonderful choice. The cabin is clean, cozy and very, very quiet.
There are many beautiful hikes nearby and several waterfalls to explore within a short drive/hike. But the best aspect - at least for us - was doing nothing and enjoying the peacefulness of the setting, sitting on the porch reading with glass of wine in hand.
Highly recommended, and we will return!
My wife and I knew this was going to be a special place, but we didn't think it was going to be that awesome! It's a quiet, dreamy, quaint cabin in the woods where you will be temporarily disconnected from this technological society which is a good thing. (Electricity is overrated, IMO). Instead relying on someone else to keep you warm, you'll have the privilege of making your own heat with firewood and make marshmallows...inside and outside the camp. The cabin is comfortable and clean. The owners are very nice, easy-going, and best of all, ANTI-NOSY, so you don't have to worry about any uncomfortable settings. Lol. I would recommend this cabin who those who want to get away from all and just seriously unwind. Please take a hike or ride a bike to "Teach out road" and visit nature at its best! ..take in the sound of birds above and babbling brooks below. Don't you dare leave your camera home! We didn't see any bear this time, which was kind of a downer, (trust me, I was looking, but my wife was scared, lol) but, according to the locals we spoke with, their out there! Also, Check out Lake Pleasant in Speculator, NY...it's breathtaking. I could go on, but I wouldn't have enough space to write. Just go and check it out with your family or friends...try something different for a change and make memories....it's good to have memories.
The best of both worlds.'Singing Mountain Adirondack Camp' is located one and a half miles from the small village of Wells. On your stroll through town you may like to visit the beach, kayak, canoe or fish in Lake Algonquin, play some tennis, while the kids enjoy the playground, check out the library and small shops or grab a snack at the local cafe. The camp is close to hiking and dirt bike trails, many lakes and rivers to fish and boat in. Nature outside your front door but one hour from Saratoga, Lake George, Albany,Glens Falls and all they have to offer.
Other Activities: Wells is a small village of about 750 people. It's a great place to settle in, shake off technology and get re-acquainted with the natural world around you. The four mile hike around Lake Algonquin is a favorite fitness route, and every trail or dirt road leads to waterfalls, ponds, ancient forests. This area is famous for its geological history and sea fossils are often found. In the last few years several bald eagles have been reported to bird watchers delight. While sitting on the porch of 'Singing Mountain' overlooking the pond, you'll be the guest of many animals who come to drink. Ducks, turtles, deer, turkeys, blue herons. With the absence of street lights, this is THE place for star gazers. You've never seen the Milky Way glow like it does here. Take a blanket to lie on, look up and find amazement and wonder again.
