winter cross country skiing and lunging: The sports lodge is the focal point for winter activities at Muskegon State Park. What began as a dream in 1983 became reality in 1990. The sports lodge story is typical of the long history of Muskegon area citizens being involved in supporting the park.
A few Muskegon people conceived the idea of building a luge and bobsled run that would serve as an Olympic training site. Energies were focused on the luge run. The idea grew and gained community support and political support from local legislators, who worked toward making state funding available for the construction and operation of the luge. By 1984, community support grew into a love affair with the luge, where countless hours of labor, construction materials, and equipment were donated to see the project completed.
During construction of the luge another idea surfaced; that of creating lighted cross-country ski trails. The project was underway almost as soon as the concept was presented.
Bike and walking : Muskegon County is home to three trails. The City of Muskegon Lakeshore Trail, The Musketawa Trail on the east side of the county and the Hart-Montague Trail State Park in the northern section Muskegon County.
City of Muskegon Lakeshore Trail
The Lakeshore Trail is designed to provide users many different scenery's, including Lake Michigan, Muskegon Lake, dunes, parks, and the City of Muskegon. The trail is scheduled for completion in 2006. You can easily reach portions of the trail from the Lake Express car ferry terminal. By following Lakeshore Dr. west on the road you meet a section of paved trail at Cottage Grove which will bring you to Pere Marquette Park. The trail loops around the park and includes great views of Lake Michigan. By traveling east from the ferry terminal on the road, down Lakeshore Dr. along Muskegon Lake, you will reach downtown Muskegon and be able to reach the paved north portion of the trail along Shoreline Dr. with great views of Muskegon Lake.
Twelve of us stayed in this charming, well appointed and perfectly located house. There were five adults and seven children, ranging in age from 2 years to 9 years of age. The booth in the kitchen was just large enough for us all to sit together for our meals. Cozy but fun! Our nine year old loved the pool table and the ping pong. The view was picture perfect and the beach just gorgeous. We walked out to both of the lighthouses and toured the museum.
Six adults stayed here for a mini vacation to celebrate a 30th birthday. We all had a great time being so close to Lake Michigan. The weather wasn't the best but we were able to have a great time anyway thanks to the pool and ping pong table. The hot tub was also nice during our chilly Michigan nights! The house had everything we needed from salt and pepper to towels and tinfoil!
Our family(parents, kids, and grandkids) spent the last week of July 2010 in this wonderful house. Before leaving we made sure we were on the calendar for 2011 same time. Our family has never had such a relaxing time together and we all needed the downtime from our stessful lives. The gkids had a great time playing pool (without the sticks) and the adults loved the hot tub. I personally enjoyed having the fire pit going each night. Having the beach just across the street was terrific and playgrounds just up the street. Never heard "I'm bored" from anyone. The gkids even went fishing with each catching a fish. The large gas grill was great for cooking meals for all of us. The owners provided great service-house had no iron or board and they bought it for us. I would highly recommend this place. We did take a day away from the beach and went to Silver Lake to walk and ride on the live dunes-truly an awesome day. The house was great and never felt we were falling all over each other. Also the front deck was great place to eat any meal and watch the sun set. Until the next stay in July 2011.
My wife and I are former Muskegon residents now living in Arizona. We came back to Michigan for a wedding in late September and rented this house during our stay.
Excellent! Great Pere Marquette beach location (voted one of the top 10 beaches in the country). The views and front deck overlooking the beach are incredible. The owners have done a great job creating a warm and relaxing environment inside and provide all the comforts you will need. The weather was incredibly good for our late September stay, and we had an easier time getting friends and family to come visit us than when we used to live in Muskegon! Location, location, location....
The only possible negative for large groups is that though the Master Bedroom downstairs and the two upstairs bedrooms are good sized, the other two bedrooms are small and contain bunk beds. That's great if you're taking kids, but wouldn't plan on trying to sleep 5 bedrooms of adults.
For our family, our week spent in Michigan was just like coming home again. The view was spectacular and the location was ideal. The house was spacious enough that even with 13 people in the house (5 of which were children), there seemed to be more than ample room. With a week full of supremely gorgeous weather, our days were spent on the beach and our evenings spent around a fire. Even later, we'd gather around the kitchen dining space playing games. It was a time of great rest and relaxation. From the first day, we were determined to come back again. For our family, this is the perfect getaway!
Close to many marinas and charter services, restaurants, beautiful sunsets and sunrises, three playgrounds within walking distance. Volleyball, backyard fire pit, hot tub. Annis Water Resources Institute.
