There should be a six star review category. Hale Aloha Aina exceeded our expectations in every way. What a gem of a property. First, the cottage is absolutely beautiful, warm and inviting. When we stepped into the house we instantly felt like we belonged here. The fragrant smell of fresh ginger blooms and plumeria was romantic and played on all of our senses. We couldn't wait to start exploring the property. What fun to find such a great variety of fruit trees and exotic plants. Bananas, limes, avocados, pineapples and guavas to name a few. This is a virtual garden of Eden. No matter how much the rest of the island beckoned to us, (and it did) we always looked forward to coming home to Hale Aloha Aina for peace and relaxation.

This vacation home is totally self-sufficient...Off the beaten path and off the Grid. Hale Aloha Aina is an ambassador for green living educating our guests on how simple it is to live off the grid using solar and propane. Solar runs the electrical appliances such as the lights, stereo, washer, dryer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, etc. The stove, refrigerator, fireplace and hot water is operated on propane gas. Water is gravity feed so there is no need of a water pump. We even have a back up water source that supplies 500 gallons of water to the cottage in the event of an emergency. Previous guests have appreciated the experience and often recreate this system in their own homes. Extended stays may have to run the generator to power the system's batteries if there is no sun. The generator is very quiet and turns on with a key. Otherwise the system is efficient enough to just run on solar energy.
If for any reason you need assistance our grounds man, housekeeper and property manager are available to serve you. They are the friendliest people and live close to the hale. As you read the guests comments you will see how fortunate we are to have them and be able to provide this sanctuary for everyone to enjoy. Since it is their work, they take pride in creating the most enchanting playground for nature lovers. There are three acres of mowed lawn with an abundance of flora and tropical fruits that our guests have the opportunity to enjoy. Picking fresh fruit from the trees is one of the favorite things to do as well as just hanging out at the hale. There is so much to explore right in your back yard that many of our guests never leave the grounds.
~ Look for our links below to our Website with more photos and information about the area and our Big Island Cottage. We've uploaded a YouTube Video that will show you some of the beautiful flora on the property. Read Guest comment to see if this is the place you have been searching for. You will not be disappointed!
Hilo Airport (ito) is the closest airport to the cottage which is an hours drive. Kona (koa) is more than two hours away, but most of our guests arrive in Kona and enjoy the beautiful drive to the hale. We recommend that you arrive before dark, but if that is not possible our directions are very thorough since many of our guests arrive late. It is all part of the adventure and we haven't lost anyone yet! Directions to the cottage and check in information will be available once you have confirmed your reservation. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call us in Bend Oregon pacific time from 10 to 10. We love to talk about Hawaii!!

Tom and Missy purchased Hale Aloha Aina in 2001 and have rented the cottage full time since 2002. We have maintained an outstanding reputation for providing the highest standard in service, accommodations and amenities for a very affordable rate. Our housekeeper and groundsman take extra pride in their work because they know how special this place really is...to us, our guests and for themselves. It is truly 'heaven on earth'! We are grateful for the aina (land) and the love it nurtures in all of us!
Missy works personally with each guest to help them plan their dream vacation. Having been raised on the Big Island, she can offer experience and knowledge from a local’s perspective as well. She worked as a hygienist for 20 years and now has a small business as a metalsmith and jewelry designer. You can find her work under the name of Silver Falls Jewelry.
Tom is a retired engineer of 30 years at Hewlett Packard. Currently he has a small archery business called Central Oregon Archery. He loves to teach Archery and volunteers most of his time to the communities youth.
In 2012 our son and grandchildren moved to Central Oregon after living abroad in the military for the past ten years. Having missed them so much... we have decided to stick around for while!
Tom and Missy Powell purchased this cottage in 2001
This is where we want to spend the rest of our lives! Besides the breathtaking beauty of having your own garden of Eden...Having pure spring water on tap and rich volcanic soil at your feet is a rare commodity when you 'LIVE' on the BIG Island. Missy was raised on the Big Island and knows the struggle with having to deal with water catchment and cleared land without any soil. The climate at 2500 elevation is very comfortable for us having lived in the NW. It's not too Hot and it's not too cold... it's just RIGHT!
THERE ARE NO OTHER HOMES ON THIS PROPERTY WHICH GIVES YOU THE ULTIMATE IN PRIVACY FOR THOSE SEEKING AN INTIMATE SETTING TO REJUVENATE, REKINDLE, AND RELAX!
This vacation rental home features solar and propane appliances with a fully equipped kitchen, washer & dryer, wireless internet and all the conveniences of a modern home. Some may say... 'Why rent a solar home when you can have electricity?' We say... 'Well why NOT!' It gives you a chance to see how easy it is to live 'Green' and self sufficient. Living off the grid doesn't have to be 'roughing it!'
What makes Hale Aloha Aina special...: If you have read our guest comments, you will already know that Hale Aloha Aina has captured the hearts and minds of travelers from all over the world. We have been offering this sanctuary to visitors since 2001 and our occupancy rate has been at least 85% which is astounding for our area. There are several reasons for our success, but most importantly, we do our best to make sure that our home is what our guests are seeking. Our personal website is very informative and our blog gives additional information in planning their trip.
When you are driving to Hale aloha aina, you begin to wonder what you are getting into as you drive what seems like a long way up this country road (the first time; everything is always shorter once you understand the area). But as soon as you open the front door, you are like "wow, this is nice". And indeed it is. Well constructed, well designed, well situated, well provisioned, well decorated and I've never tasted such good water, so even the well is well. Centrally located to everything you want to see on the South side. Beautifully sunny every morning we were there (and the Caldera was quite active). Only a bit of vog one day; most of it seems to blow right around the west side and up to Captain Cook and Kailua (which I would not recommend staying in - we did later in the trip and were vogged in every day). The nights were full of stars, the mornings full of songbirds and I have never seen more beautiful horses anywhere than in Wood Valley and in other parts of the south island. Would I recommend this place to others? Without hesitation! Thanks Tom and Missy! This was money well spent and more than we expected! Oh, one more thing...kudos to their housekeeper...the place was spotless and dust free.
On our frequent trips to each of the Hawaiian islands, we NEVER go back to a vacation rental twice. Our recent and second trip to Hale Aloha Aina was the first time we broke that rule, because we've never been able to find another place that evokes the level of emotions that this perfect cottage does. There is no better place to be in love!
The Big Island is called big for a reason, and we can say that although we noted very high activity at the volcano and much larger plumes of volcanic fog than on our last trip, we never noticed it at or near the cottage, even though its only a 20 minute drive away. Every morning except one was bright sunshine and clear skies.
We did not stay for the 7th night as originally planned, in order to make it to Kauai for a vacation home rental that required we stay at least 5 days. That was the most expensive place we have ever booked at approx $500/night, a huge place on an oceanside bluff with hot tub, jacuzzi, and every amenity one could imagine, including access to its own private beach. Yet, we found that within a couple of days our minds and hearts were drifting back to your cottage, a place that makes us feel like no other vacation home we have ever rented on any island on 13 island trips.
And so, as we write this review, and since we've returned home a few days ago, we find our minds constantly drifting back to thoughts of Hale Aloha Aina, and the cottage, the outdoor shower, the stars, cooking for each other in a surprisingly well equipped kitchen, continuous walks around the beautiful and expansive property.
If there's a place on earth that brings a higher level or peace, intimacy, love and passion, we haven't found it yet. We'll keep looking, but in the meantime, can't imagine a trip to the Hawaiian islands without an extended stay at Hale Aloha Aina.
We waited 30 years for our honeymoon and were blessed with a week in 2014 at the Hale. What a beautiful blessed experience. We could not wait to come back ! This year we went for 2 weeks !!! This little home truly welcomes you as if it is your little home. Tom and Missy are the best at what they do helping you with everything, they make themselves available to answer questions and share ideas. There are many helpful books to help guide your trip. One of my favorites was a local cookbook. We enjoyed cooking everyday in the completely functional kitchen and sitting outside. It is the most romantic setting with so many places to sit, walk, lay under the stars and even enjoy an outdoor shower under the sunshine. I highly recommend this cottage as a honeymoon destination or a getaway to heal and rest. Your soul will be refreshed and awakened. Blessings Tom and Missy, Mahalo ♡
From start to finish, Hale Aloha Aina absolutely perfect. The cottage was beautifully decorated, and we honestly felt at home as soon as we walked in. There was so much detail everywhere, inside and outside the cottage, and every time I moved from room to room I noticed different artistic decor I hadn't noticed before. There was plenty of space for all the things my fiancé and I had packed for our 10 day stay on the island, and the kitchen was full of every item we needed to make meals AND store them-- the Tupperware was an extremely helpful detail we hadn't even thought about until we needed to use some! I can also not say enough about the cleanliness of the cottage. It really felt like we were the first people to have ever stayed there-- it was THAT clean!
The area outside the cottage was equally maintained. There had been a storm in the days preceding our arrival, and although it was evident along the road to get to the cottage, the yard area was seemingly untouched! It was also so secluded and peaceful that we had a little trouble leaving the property on our first day there! We did some exploring and both agreed that the limes we found were the freshest and tastiest limes we had ever eaten.
I can also not stress enough how amazing Missy and Tom were as hosts. We arrived to the Big Island in the evening and had some difficulty finding the cottage in the dark. Even with the time difference, Missy and Tom were extremely helpful in getting us there, giving us extra directions and doing their best to make sure we made it safe and sound! The cottage, in the daytime, is really easy to find, so I would definitely take Missy's suggestion to new visitors to arrive when it's still light out. It's a beautiful drive in, and I recommend to anyone staying there to start your day off with a run or walk out to the Temple and back-- there are so many beautiful things you miss in a car! (For reference, it's about 2 miles from the property to the temple.)
Our overall experience at Hale Aloha Aina definitely can't be beat, and I'll absolutely stay there again the next time I'm on the Big Island!
We love this getaway place. It's quiet, restful, and beautiful,. Every time
we go, we discover something new on the grounds, such as all the fruit
trees. This is our third time at this cottage and we finally took the time
to explore the grounds. We ate perfectly ripened avocados, oranges,
bananas, persimmon, and we were fascinated by the Brazilian grapes which
grow on the bark of that tree instead of in a cluster. Who would've
thought! We love looking at the stars on the nights when it's not cloudy.
Next time, I will bring attachments so I can take pictures of the various
planets and constellations that were visible to us. We love staying on this
side of the island where it's quiet and very noncommercial, and of course
the coffee in this part of the island is superb. In our opinion, Kau coffee
is far better than Kona coffee. So, we look forward to returning in the
future and maybe someday will stay for two weeks. Bob B
We stayed for 3 nights early Dec. Have to say it was hard to leave. It was a perfect retreat. As this was our first time on the Big Island we booked 4 location around the island. Aloha Aina was our highlight and most memorable place we stayed. So relaxing. We loved the fresh fruit around the garden. Loved the hammock. Experienced the outdoor shower. We cooked every night. All the amenities were there. We even took the bikes for a ride down to the coffee mill. Everything was perfect. We will definitely come back. We fell in love with the Big Island. Thank you for providing such a positive experience.
Our stay at Hale Aloha Aina was fabulous. This was our honeymoon dream! My wife and I had the pleasure of staying in this secret hideaway for 10 amazing days. The weather was fantastic. The outside shower was energizing. The fragrance from the flowers mixed with the Hawaiian air was rejuvenating. The seclusion of the cottage was one of a kind. Our plan is to visit again on our 5 year anniversary. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Powell.
