About Kristín

Kristin and Bjarni have been married for over 25 years, living in Reykjavik, our previous homes has been in the USA, Sweden and Norway, Kristin is a professional chef and Bjarni is a building contractor, and have been renting cottage in the Geysir area, Engjagil in Helludalur from the year 2009, this is our newest property from 2013, we are hoping to make your stay in our cottage Iceland enjoyable and filled with good memories.

Kristín purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Kristín chose South Iceland

Cottages Engjagil 4 and 5 in Helludalur Geysir area are built in the year 2007-8, made of logs from Finland, the houses are situated in the peaceful valley Helludalur yet it is in the midst of the Golden Circle, what we love about this place is that we find peace and tranquillity during our stays there and it has been a huge pleasure to share this special place with our guests, we are thankful and blessed to do so.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has enough space for up to 6 persons and the hot tub is a bonus, its so relaxing to be in the warm geothermal water on a cold winters night gazing at the northern lights or meteor showers or in the summertime when we have bright nights, the beds are very comfortable and on the loft there is a roof window right above your head so you can see the stars at night. Icelandic ponies are often in the field a few steps from the cottage. Because we have 2 cottages in the same area we can have up to 12 persons at the same time.

WONDERFUL!! Warm, welcoming and beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

The location of this cottage is magnificent. The natural scenery and the close accessibility to Geysir and Gulfoss in particular were great.

The accommodation was excellent. Large comfortable sofas and comfortable beds. We had very extreme and quite violent weather yet still felt safe and secure in the cottage. The views from the cottage were wonderful. There were bits and pieces in the larder which helped enormously in the first day or so. If a welcome pack of basics was listed as available it would be a great help perhaps? When you come off the plane and are tired from travelling, it would be nice to know that everything you need for a couple of days would be waiting for you. But that is just a small thing.

Everything worked well and everything was good order. The shower was powerful and a lovely temperature. Kristin, we think the cottage needs an unusual and beautiful Icelandic name to identify it and highlight it more clearly on this website. It would make it easier to find.

The mezzanine bedroom upstairs is a wonderful area for kids or for adults who want to be away from the other bedrooms. A Queen size bed and a single bed and lots of space with a skylight. It could be a magical place to watch the skies from. The big double bedroom room downstairs is comfortable with good storage. The twin room downstairs is smaller without storage but there were plenty of hooks and rails throughout the cottage for things to hang and dry out.

We loved our stay there. We had a twelve month old baby with us and there were absolutely no problems. Everything we needed was there......and despite some very severe weather, we were even privileged to see the lights.

I would not hesitate to recommend the cottage to anyone who is thinking about having a real Icelandic experience but we would recommend a 4x4 for winter holidays without question. Both routes to Reykjavik are through amazing scenery. It is a good hour and a half from the main cities so is isolated ...........but that was exactly what we wanted. .....and that was exactly what we got. We loved it and would like to return again in the summer next time to see Iceland in its summer clothes.

Kristin was extremely helpful throughout the booking process and popped in to see we were okay during our stay. We would have no hesitation in recommending this gorgeous place to anyone thinking of avoiding the touristy coach shuttle thing and seeing the real Iceland at your own pace.

Great cottage, ideally situated

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over Christmas, and had a great time. The cottage is very homely and cosy, and you'll find everything you need. There is a dining area, a large sitting area and a well equipped kitchen. There's lots of hot water on tap and a well-appointed bathroom. The beds are so comfortable! You will sleep like tops.

There is a mezzanine floor which has two windows in the roof - ideal for looking out for the northern lights! We saw them on three separate occasions. Standing outside the cottage watching the lights ripple and swirl was unforgettable.

The cottage is very convenient for the Golden Circle. Be sure to visit Geysir, Gulfoss and the National Park.

Kristin was wonderful; so helpful. She had even put up some Christmas lights and a little tree for us! We certainly intend to come back, probably in the summer. We highly recommend this cottage

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at this cottage with my family (6 adults) and we had a great time.

The cottage is very easy to find and in a great location, only a short easy walk to Geysir (even in the snow) and a short drive to Laugarvatn (grocery store, thermal spa and restaurant), and Gullfoss waterfall. We had a 9 person van and found it moderately easy in the winter to drive up to the cabin, one time we were snowed in but managed to get out easily enough.

The cabin is very clean, large and spacious, even for 6 adults. The sofa and dining area is enough to seat everyone comfortably, and all the furnishings are in top condition. There are windows all around so you can turn the lights out and watch for the aurora from the comfort of the sofa.

The kitchen is well stocked with good quality pans and dishes, more than enough for our week long stay. There were even some condiments and food which we were told to help ourselves to. The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave, oven, toaster, kettle, etc.

The bedrooms are comfortable and warm, the top bedroom is open plan and it can get a little noisy up there (more a reflection on my family than the cabin!) but it is fairly private as you can't see the beds from downstairs.

The hot tub - wow! Lovely hot geothermal water, sometimes so hot that you need to get out of the tub for a few moments, and we had snow around the tub and it still works fine, and rubbing snow on yourself during a hot tub is a pretty amazing experience.

Kristin was extremely helpful prior and during our trip, she helped us choose the right cabin and gave us advice on hiring a car. We also managed to meet her in person which was lovely, she is extremely nice and friendly.

Thanks for everything Kristin, we would love to come back!

Owner's Response: Dear Carrie and family, it was so nice to meet all of you happy people, I must say that you are all so friendly and positve , what a lovely family you are! It was so nice to meet you too, I forgot to tell you that you can have the water colder in the tub just by using the thermometor on the fawcett, sorry about that! Please come back in the summer as it does not get too warm, just like the head of your family likes it! Thank you for leaving the cottage so nice and tidy! Warm greetings from Kristín & family

Lovely cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a fantastic week here last week and we already wish we were back there!

The cottage itself is great, with plenty of space and lovely decor. There's plenty of cooking utensils and a big fridge/freezer and oven so you can easily make full meals for a group of people.

I loved the big windows too, giving views to almost every aspect. This is also great for waiting for the northern lights. Turn the lights in the cottage off and you can gaze out the windows watching the northern lights from the warmth and comfort of the sofa! We had a reasonably cloudy week but of the 7 nights we were there, we saw the lights on 4 of them.

Then there's the hot tub, which is excellent and so relaxing to sit in after a busy day.

Kristin is also great and very quick to answer any emails and questions we had. I'd recommend staying here for anyone who wants a peaceful time in a stunning location and cottage. You can't go wrong.

Thanks Kristin for a great week!

Gorgeous cabin In a great location!

  • 5 of 5

Me and my boyfriend had 5 nights in this stunning cabin and it was a wonderful experience! The cabin was incredibly spacious and wonderfully equipped with all we could need. The location was brilliant for us, having hired a 4x4 to tour Iceland it was centrally located to everywhere we wanted to see! You cant believe how close to geyser you are! In walking distance but in a tucked away location. The magnificent Gulfoss waterfall is also 5mins down the road! The hot tub was amazing ! It really doesn't take long to fill up, it was an incredible experience to have a glass of wine in after a days exploring and take in the beautiful night sky! The views in the afternoon are also amazing! Owner Kristin was wonderful, quick to respond to our emails and helpful throughout our stay. We would return in a heartbeat and recommend this cabin to all!

Best. Vacation. Ever.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean, comfortable and much larger than expected. There is a large wraparound deck with stunning views and the hot tub was a nice treat after a long day.

The location is very quiet and peaceful, a perfect home base for exploring local attractions - Geysir (walking distance), Gullfoss and Þingvellir National Park.

Booking the cottage was easy. Kristin responded to email quickly and the entire transaction went smoothly.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage and our vacation in Iceland. It was like living in a postcard! So beautiful.
