Overview

Pachino House Rental Photos and Description

5 sleeps, 2 bathrooms, waterfront, garden, terrace, village

This is a cute house with a garden and a panoramic roof terrace situated right on the seafront at Marzamemi, which is an ancient fishing village in the extreme southeast of Sicily. From the house’s roof terrace, there is an incredible view of the village, its small port and the vividly painted boats. The beach is in front of the house, but it is better not to swim in between of the boats. Bathers can go to a beautiful beach that distances less then 150 meters from the house. The tradition of all things marine is still very much alive in Marzamemi today. Only recently has it become a popular destination for Italians who enjoy the combination of the area’s natural beaches and the vibrancy of an authentic coastal village. The village boasts many restaurants, pizzerias and shops selling delicious local produce such as locally caught and processed tuna and swordfish or the famous cherry tomatoes from nearby Pachino.

Casa la Terrazza has 2 bedrooms, a living room and a separate kitchen. One bedroom has a double bed with air conditioning and an en-suite bathroom with shower, bidet and toilet. The second bedroom has a single bed and a queen size bed. The living room also has air conditioning, a sofa and a dining table. There is a second bathroom and a basic kitchen. The garden has a covered terrace with a set of table and chairs. A wall that surrounds the garden and the house guarantees privacy and gives children the possibility to play without worries. All the rooms have a fan on the roof. The view from the house’s roof terrace, the contrasting palm- and olive trees, the presence of restaurants a few steps away and its location directly at the sea make Casa la Terrazza a very nice holiday home. The house is located in the main street of Marzamemi where the Sicilians on Saturday (and in summer every day) enjoy their evening walk. In August it can become very busy. Next to the house is a very good restaurant that is also called La Terrazza.

Well situated cttage, if noisy at times

  • 3 of 5
A charming cottage right on the beach with lovely views from the roof, which has comfortable seating (the ideal spot for an evening drink) However, in the yard next door they were very slowly dismantling the pontoons from the harbour (see 1st review), which involved a crane and lots of banging till late into the evening.
Some maintenance was needed. The sunshade on the roof had collapsed when we arrived and was not repaired, the grill was not connected and the washing machine had been doctored so that it worked on only one programme. The new iron didn't work at all, partly because the plug didn't fit the sockets! However, the kitchen was well equipped with utensils and water was hot. We could have done with more than one decent sized wine glass and more than one drying up cloth, but towels and bedding were plentiful.
We could find only one, rather limited, shop on the corner in the middle of the village, but there is a basic supermarket on the outskirts of Pachino.
We liked the outside space, where you could chose sun or shade for eating and there was surprisingly little traffic noise. In fact in October there was no noise at night, but on the downside there were only a handful of restaurants open.
We enjoyed a visit to the Baroque town of Noto, the lido at San Lorenzo (excellent value buffet lunches) the fishing port at Portopallo and lunch at the restaurant on the quayside with 7 Antipasti del Mare. Contrary to information in our guide book, there did not seem to be a fish market on the quayside.
Several of the bars provided substantial nibbles with your drinks order, at next to no cost, eliminating the need for a starter at the, slightly pricey, restaurants. We found the food to be best at the one with the blue furniture in the square.
With regard to navigation, the larger roads are fine, but at several of the country cross roads there are no signs at all and, even with a good map, it was difficult. Finding the car hire at Catania airport is not straightforward and the signage from here to the autostrada passed us by, so do some research before you go. Once on the right road, it is an easy trip to Marzamemi. You can park on the sand in front of the gates to the cottage, as long as the owner of the next door restaurant doesn't block you in.
The owner was very friendly, but language difficulties made it hard for him to explain how some things worked. I think a 'book of the house' with hints from previous guests would be a great help.

Gorgeous setting

  • 4 of 5
This is a cute rather big old fisherman's villa. It is simple and old, but is all you really need. We loved the outside kitchen. It was easy to get everywhere and the hosts were very friendly. Our only slight but not serious criticism was that it would have been helpful to have had an information booklet in order to help you find supermarkets, know when to take the bins out, recommended restaurants etc. as we found it quite hard to work everything out. The villa is in a lovely location and is comfortable inside with a lovely view. It had most of what we needed but could do with a couple more things like wine glasses. Especially when the wine is so amazing! We also found 2 weeks a bit too long as there is not much to do in the direct area but we would certainly visit again and would recommend this villa to anyone.

Roof with a view

  • 4 of 5
This villa worked so well for us - well kitted out and comfortable, located between a restaurant and a boat yard, private garden and roof with multiple choices of locations to eat, sunbathe and take in the wonderful views - it had everything we wanted. Marzamemi was surprisingly busy and the neighbouring yard provided hours of (slightly noisy) entertainment as they proceeded to construct pontoons and other facilities for a diving centre (we think). Marzamemi is divided into 2 very different halves with Caza La Terrazza on the border between: to the north is the old village and tuna factory with some lovely waterside restaurants and picturesque square and churches; to the south is Blackpool (which we pretty much ignored). The view from the roof was to die for, with the harbour and island house to the fore and Isola di Capo Passero in the distance, and a lovely lagoon inland, home to a colony of stilts, little egrets and shelducks. Our only complaint was that on Friday & Saturday nights the sound system started up at La Balata over the water and carried on til the early hours - so ear plugs are recommended!
OK so the villa could do with a coat of paint, but the images on the website dont do it justice - it has a lovely Sicilian country cottage feel indoors and eating in the walled garden is a pleasure - complete with BBQ and external hob if required.
We flew into Catania airport and drove south to Marzamemi along the coastal autostrada - you will need a decent map or satnav to find it though - signposting leaves a lot do be desired! By the way dont attempt to use a Debit card when picking up a hire car in Italy - they will not accept it on any count!

Highly recommended

VILLA SUBLIME IDEALEMENT SITUEE

  • 4 of 5

San Lorenzo, 2 km up north, marks the beginning of one of the most beautiful stretches of the Sicilian coast. Here the shore is characterised by golden sand beaches, turquoise seas and white limestone rocks. San Lorenzo borders on the natural reserve of ‘Vendicari’. Here you’ll find a breathtaking variety of Mediterranean flora and fauna, exotic beaches and Byzantine ruins.
