Location description

Eski Foca is a small fishing town, famous for its unspoiled atmosphere. There is a busy fishing fleet at the harbor that goes out to sea early in the morning and return in the afternoon. A fish market on the waterside is open every day selling the latest catch fresh off the boats.

Every Tuesday there is a big market in the streets of Foca. Here you can find fabulously fresh fruit and vegetables, village cheeses, fresh bread, jams and savories, herbs and spices. There is also a non-food market selling just about anything you might need (and more!)

The bus station is a short walk for departing on trips to Izmir and the main points of interest such as Pergamon, Ephesus etc. In summer there are also local boat tours and a ferry service to Lesvos (2 hrs).

The local boat tours usually start about 11 am and you return at 5pm. Launch on board is included and drinks (soft and alcoholic) are available (you can also take your own. Munch is usually grilled fish and salad, cooked on a barbecue hanging over the side of the boat. A great day out.

There is a town beach close by but if you want bigger beaches and facilities then take a Dolmus (small bus) 10 minutes up the coast where you can choose from a number of lovely beaches. The bus runs every 10-15 minutes during the summer months.

Local events

Regular festivals and visits from folk dance/music groups from other Turkish areas or from abroad.

Tourist attractions

Excavation sites of ancient Greek theater and other buildings. Sea, Sun and Superb Friendly Service.

I am an architect by profession and I worked in my own practice in Ankara for most of my working life. When we moved to Foca I decided to make a lifestyle change and now I have my own crafts and cooking business to reflect two of my passions in life. I am married to Michael, an English man and adopted son of Turkey, and I have a 22 year old daughter, Defne, who the house is named after.

Meltem Ozkan Dorsman purchased this cottage in 2006

We have a passion for restoring old stone houses in Foca - we live in one too! We want to share our love of Foca with other people too.

The cottage has a lovely atmosphere - cosy, bright and private. It also has a terrace and a garden which can be hard to find in Foca. Also the cottage is ideally located in the old town and is close to the harbour, beaches and restaurants.

Delightful Home Base

  • 5 of 5
We used this really cute stone house as our base camp for exploring the sites in the neighboring regions. This proved to be an excellent choice. Everything was where you expected it to be. Michael and Meltem were very helpful in getting us organized and recommending places for us to visit. The village was really unspoilt and we enjoyed our strolls along the quay. Will definitely come back in in another season

Beautiful stone house

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just spent a week in this beautifully renovated stone house. It was beautiful inside and out with everything you could possibly need for your stay and very clean. Our relatives were staying nearby and there was plenty room for us all to eat and spend time together. The kitchen is very well equiped for anyone wishing to cook for them selves which we did and Michael and Meltem very generously provided lots of extras such as bread, jams, milk, fruit, juice and biscuits etc etc.
The outside space provided a mixture of sun, shade and privacy, with an excellent table, chairs and BBQ for our family gatherings and the location was perfect, just a short walk to the bakery, shops and of course the harber and sea front. Totally loved it.

Lovely Stone House

  • 5 of 5
Wonderful stone house in the peaceful small fishing village in Eski Foca, set in a strategic location with most of the touristic attractions close and sea by walking . The cottage is very cozy and felt just like home. It’s colorful garden was perfect for breakfast in the morning and the neighborhood was peaceful. The stone house is within walking distance to restaurants and convenience stores which was helpful. The people of Eski Foca are very welcoming, warm and hospitable. We spent an amazing time there and we just loved the stone house, would go back again!! Meltem & Michael were very welcoming and were always there whenever we needed anything or wanted recommendations on activities or places to visit.
– Place called home- :)

We must thank Meltem & Michael (I must say the stone house is perfect for people with young families. )

Great value for money and have already recommended to friends and family, we really enjoyed our time.

Lovely peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5
This is a beautiful peaceful place to stay in the pretty town of Foca. Foca itself is a friendly fishing port, great for people who want restaurants and bars but without a big party tourist thing going on. If you like fish, the daily fresh fish market or getting catch direct from the boats is great. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and modernised. A very well-equipped kitchen, and lots of space inside and out, friendly neighbours, made it very relaxing. Mike and Meltem are lovely and just a street or two away if you need them but totally unintrusive if you want to be left to yourself. And they make great jam :-) I recommend this place highly to people wanting a grown up relaxing break. You don't need a car - you can get a transfer (Mike & Meltem can organise) or save lira and take the metro from the airport to Hatundere, and the bus outside the metro station will take you to Foca, and the stop (first one as you enter Foca) is 3 mins from the house. Was travelling solo and am female, no problem at all here.

Owner's Response: We thank Kate for her kind words. It was a pleasure to meet her and hope to see her again in Foca!! We aim to offer good quality and service at a good price. We are only 2 minutes away if you need anything, but we will always respect your privacy. We agree that Foca is a very safe place and is still free from "mass tourism". Thanks again to Kate for making time to write a review.

Eine Unterkunft wie versprochen

  • 5 of 5

Lovely house in nice village

  • 5 of 5
Defne Ev is a lovely nice house, comfortable and very tasteful furnished.
It is as nice as the pictures look in the Internet.
We did not miss anything and felt soon as being at home, especially our children enjoyed the big TV-scan with one german channel and we enjoyed the differrent nice places in the house to sit and relax.
Foca is a nice little town with restaurants and shops, fisher boats and a beach not far away from Defne Ev ( 5 minutes to walk).
All the people in Foca were so friendly and helpful.
We have rent some bikes and discovered other beaches, made trips to Izmir and Bergama with a Minibus, which was very interesting and funny.
Meltem arranged the taxi to /from the airport and was always helpful if we had any questions.

Eski Foca (Old Foca) - a personal view

In Foca you wake to the sound of birds in the trees and in the distance, you hear the distinctive motors of the small fishing boats leaving the harbor in the Little Sea (kucuk deniz). Mornings are usually bright and the sky is blue for most of the year. Even in winter you can still have breakfast in the morning sun. A two or three minute walk from Defne Ev (a Greek stone house or “tas ev”) brings you to the Little Sea, where you can sit in one of many cafes next to the clear water in the harbor and drink your first tea (cay) of the day, together with a limit (a circular bread with sesame seeds) and some local village cheese. Just take a few minutes to watch the boats coming and going and enjoy the views – you will feel yourself adjusting to Foca time.

If it is a Tuesday you will see lots of local people wheeling past you with their trolleys– they are off to the weekly bazaar (pazaar) where you can find just about every kind of vegetable, fruit, herb and spice. The noisy and colorful bazaar stays in town all day and covers a sizable part of the streets with its stalls, selling clothes, textiles, shoes and just about anything else you can think of, in addition to all of the freshest fruit and vegetables brought into town by farmers from the surrounding countryside.

On other days there are lots of walks to explore – sometimes we will walk around the harbor of the Little Sea by the water’s edge and turn into the Big Sea (Buyuk Deniz) – yes we have two harbors in Foca – both with their own character and atmosphere. A couple of hours walking will give you an appetite and there are many cafes, restaurants and bars to choose from, offering a wide range of Turkish cuisine – from snacks such as Ayvalik toast, to meals of fresh lobster and the freshest fish, squid and octopus, all accompanied by a wide range of mezzo (small dishes of hot and cold appetizers) and fresh salads. We also have a range of local wines to complement the food and they are very reasonably priced.

If you want to experience another side of Foca then try taking a walk to the “English Nose” (Ingiliz Buruna) which is the headland at the end of the Little Sea – a 30 minute walk will take you to a peaceful haven from which to take in the panoramic views of Foca and the chain of little islands receding into the horizon. You can even take a boat to Fig Island (Incir Ada) and spend the day there with a barbecue and a good book or two – another place to escape to when you want to get away from the crowds.
