************************* The PROPERTY CAPANNE DI SOPRA *************************

Capanne di Sopra is located 1.2 kms from the hamlet of Montefollonico, in a quiet setting which enjoys the unmatched skyline of Montepulciano, with its masterpiece temple of San Biagio, Val d’Orcia's hilly border and top of Mount Amiata.

The property is situated on a slope at 450 meters of altitude, covering a 5 hectars hilly surface, with an olive grove and a small vineyard, which give an “extravergine” olive oil, and a Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG red wine.

The two stone farmhouses of the property have been restored in accordance with Tuscan traditions, and carefully furnished with owner's family pieces. The two houses, although closed one another, are independent and assure absolutely privacy to residents. The houses are fully equipped for six: in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. Barbecues in the kitchen. The houses have: drinkable water from public utility, instant hot water, mobile telephone, washing machines and central heating. Baby cots and high chairs. There are a number of sun chairs and iron made chairs and table to dine outside. A USB key is available for Internet 3G access.

Some 400 meters from the paved road, the site remains secluded while accessible only via a private driveway, ensuring that you'll be staying undisturbed, in the midst of olive groves, vineyards and woods. Parking area at the entrance of the property.

To preserve the character of the site, the owners chose not to build any swimming pool.

Thermal spas at Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo and Rapolano are no more than half an hour's drive away, and Sant’Albino, Bettolle, Chianciano pools are within 6-7 miles.

Historical and cultural sites nearby include Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona, Chiusi, Monte San Savino, Siena, Arezzo, Perugia and Lake Trasimeno which are all within 75 minutes drive.

You need a car to get there. The hamlet of Montefollonico provides basic services ( food shops, bank, pharmacy, restaurants, and sport bar), and is 4 miles from Montepulciano and 3 miles from Torrita di Siena. Take A1 Highway ( Autostrada del sole) and leave it at Val di Chiana or Chiusi exit. Then you need about half an hour drive to the farm. The closest Railway station is at Chiusi, on the Roma – Firenze line, about 15 miles away. At reservation we will forward you a detailed road map and instructions.

About michele ferrara, owner

We bought the property more than 20 years ago. Done a big restauration work, in several installments. Planted olive trees and more wine. Reshaped the cellar, we make wine and oil for the family and guests, not a commercial production, although under certification procedures. We are retired, an ex computers systems manager and a librarian archeologist.

michele ferrara, owner purchased this villa in 1990

Why michele ferrara, owner chose Montepulciano

Secluded location in unmatched historical and agricultural territory. Historical and cultural sites nearby include Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona, Chiusi, Monte San Savino, Siena, Arezzo, Perugia and Lake Trasimeno which are all within 75 minutes drive. The thermal spas and bathing at Chianciano, Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo and Rapolano are no more than half an hour's drive away. There are three swimming pools within 10 kilometers and tennis courts, horseback riding and mountain biking are nearby.

What makes this villa unique

Best fitted for people looking for history, arts, good food and nature. The farm offers a preserved country environment and social relations. You will be in a secluded place, from where you can reach an historical and lively village, Montefollonico, to make your shopping, to drink something and see people at the sport bar. You can decide to go and see number of historical sites in the whereabouts, or simply stay there.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had paid for 2 weeks stay near Montepulciano, a place with a pool and excellent view, but it was quite spoilt by the unrelenting loud noise of heavy traffic weaving its way along the main road. And our neighbour woke noisily at 5am... So in trying to rescue our holiday, we found Cristina and Michele who offered us accomodation at Mulinello on a lovely Tuscan Hill, and our inferno turned to paradiso.

This is the Tuscany we have come to love, with the hills and wild flowers and with its own beautiful view across to Montepulciano. A hoopoe bird came to visit the lawn at breakfast time, and I saw deer close by. All is quiet at night and makes for a restful holiday. The house is well supplied and clean. Walking back from Montefellonico we had the most splendid displays of fireflies.

There are plenty of places to visit. On this occasion we enjoyed trips to Siena, Pienza, La Foce and Montepulciano.

With thanks to Michele, Cristina and the very practical and helpful Maddelena, and for our rescued holiday.

Beautiful Villa in a Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed in the Villa Banditello this past July, and it was the perfect base from which to explore the neighbouring hill towns of Montepulciano, Montefollonico, Pienza, Siena, etc. The villa is 5 minutes outside of Montefollonico (great restaurant here called 13 Gobbi, where the owner/chef makes home made fettuccini in a hollowed out peccorino cheese rind, scraping the melted cheese down into the pasta .. yum!). It is situated in its own vineyards and olive groves, and is beautifully appointed, right down to a wood oven (in addition to the regular one). The kitchen was very well equipped, the washing machine worked perfectly, bedrooms and bathrooms were spacious, bright and clean, and the views . . . well they were pretty much "storybook"! Michele personally spoke to us on the phone as we arrived, to be sure that we had all we needed. The housekeeper was there to greet us, and showed us everthing we needed to know. There is lots of room for parking. Furnishings, books and art are plentiful and tasteful. It really is a home away from home. There was even a bottle of the vineyard's own red wine waiting for us on arrival. Thank you Michele and Cristina! We would like to return this summer again in July! We will contact you!

Beautiful Villa with amazing views

  • 5 of 5
We stayed in this villa for 5 nights in April and had a most wonderful time. The house was spacious and clean and beautifully decorated. When we arrived, it was late afternoon and the view with the sunset took our breath away! It was more beautiful than we could ever have imagined. Our time here was so peaceful. We loved every minute of it.

We had a little difficulty following the hand drawn map but the housekeeper was very helpful and we followed her in the car. The owner, Michele, just happened to be up from Rome while we were there, so we were able to meet him. He was a lovely gentleman, very interesting and pleasant with lots of information about the area. He was helpful and also left us in peace to enjoy our holiday.

There are two houses on the property, very close together. Lucky for us, no one was staying in the other house while we were there. We went for walks and drives in the area. The nearby village is lovely with restaurants and a small grocery store.

We stayed in the larger house. There was one main bedroom and 3 twin bedrooms. The beds were comfortable. The bathrooms were clean and excellent shower (an italian style - hose in the bath). The kitchen was well-equiped with lovely glassware and crockery. The heating was a little bit difficult to understand how to work, but once it worked it was perfect. We used the open fire which was cosy. There is a table with comfy chairs for eating al fresco with a spectacular view of Montepulciano and fields and forests.

You definitely need a car to stay here. It's off the beaten track which means it's very quiet and peaceful. It took us about 2 hours to drive here from Florence. There is no internet and there is no tv.

We loved our stay here and recommend it highly! If we could come back to Italy, we would definitely stay here again!

Adult family and friends

  • 5 of 5
We were a group of eight adults... two of us celebrating our 50th anniversary and our adult children and friends. We occupied both Banditello and Mulinello for most of a week...the capstone of our two weeks in Italy. To say that the accommodations were superb would be an understatement! Both casas were warm and inviting, beautifully furnished and appointed, with modern kitchens and bathrooms and lovely, comfy furniture- much of which was antique. We cooked nearly all our evening meals in the fabulous kitchen of Banditello, and gathered around the fireplace in the evenings to share stories of each day's activities. The younger generation walked to Montefollonico for groceries, while the seniors spent time taking in the views of the vineyards and olive groves that surround the casas on all sides. Some of our days were spent touring the nearby medieval hill towns and monasteries. Other times we enjoyed just reading, relaxing, and soaking up the atmosphere. The owners, who live in Rome, checked in each day by phone, and the local caretaker, Maddelena, also paid a short visit each day to answer any questions (how to operate the washing machine, the heating system, etc.) She was delightful! It has long been a dream of ours to stay in a 'real' Tuscan farmhouse, and these beautifully restored homes exceeded our greatest expectations. Everything was perfect. We hope to return to Le Capanne di Sopra!

Serenity and Solitude

  • 5 of 5
Tuscany is a favorite place for my husband and me - and particularly the Montepulciano/Montefollonico area. Having stayed in Montepulciano (walking over to Montefollonico for lunch) we decided for this vacation to stay in the smaller of the two hillside sisters. We couldn't have been happier with our decision. The farmhouse was beautiful, secluded and quiet. The scenery from the windows, breathtaking. I could have stayed here forever - and often revisit the spot in my mind when everyday stress overtakes me. We plan a return. It could never been soon enough!

A Quiet Jewel in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5
My spouse and I had stayed at Banditello previously and had a marvelous time, so we tried Mullinello this time. Our hosts were magnificent and helpful as usual and the lodgings were exceptionally clean and welcoming. At one point, Michele even apologized for the rain! The setting was superb and we took long quiet walks along the country roads lined with woods and pastures and vineyards, ate dinner and bought groceries at nearby Montefollonico, and made day trips to favorite spots in Tuscany. Such gracious and friendly people made it certain that we shall return. This is the spot if you want quiet to read and talk and you need the view of Montepulciano across the valley. Many thanks to our hosts for their hospitality to Americans who want to be Italian!

Heavenly

  • 5 of 5
We thought that it would be special but had no idea how special until we arrived and saw the panoramic vista, olive groves and fruit orchards. The villa was spotless. It had everything and more, furnished to a high standard with so many delightful homely touches - thank you Christina! The location was perfect; suitably secluded and yet within walking distance of Montefollonico. Thank you Michele and Christina for red wine, olive oil, hospitality and wonderful memories of our Tuscan dream. We will be back!
