Nestled in a redwood forest near Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, on the bank of the Wild and Scenic Smith River, this cozy log cabin is perfect for serious fishing, family vacations, honeymoons, retreats or just a quiet place to relax and enjoy nature.
This log cabin was built in the 1930's as a fishing cabin. It has since been upgraded with skylights in every room, and a comfortable heating system, but it still has a wonderfully rustic and comfortable feel to it. The cabin is about 10 miles inland from the coast, barely a mile from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, and right on the bank of the undamned, Wild and Scenic Smith River.
We have easy river access to one of the best steelhead and salmon fishing spots on the Smith. Last year two of our guests hooked 22 steelhead in one day. In November, you can reliably see salmon spawning right below the cabin.
This cabin is very private. The closest house is over 200 feet from the cabin and impossible to see through the trees. You are surrounded by a forest and a river. It is like having your own private park with all the comforts of home.
Close by are miles of fern-lined trails through ancient Redwoods. If you want to touch and be touched by an ancient Redwood forest, this is the place to come.
The Smith River is unbelievably beautiful. It is protected in it's natural state throughout it's length. It is crystal clear and perfect in the summer for swimming, canoeing with canoe available at no charge, tubing, rafting, cut-throat trout fishing or just sun bathing on a sandy beach in front of the cabin.
You might also enjoy the wildlife. This area is still mostly the way God made it. It is common to see osprey, otters, mergansers, kingfishers, sandpipers, dippers and even an occasional bald eagle. In the spring, the wildflowers are awesome. If you like blackberries, late July through mid-August is when you want to be here.
We are about a 20 minute drive from the coast and some spectacular beaches. These beaches are dog friendly with lots of drift wood, making it perfect for evening campfires and roasting hot dogs.
Salmon and Steelhead fishing in the fall and winter is really what this cabin is all about. The cabin walls are decorated with pictures of trophy steelhead caught right in front of the cabin. Unfortunately, you need to get reservations in early for this time of year.
The cabin is also a perfect home base for exploring this part of the world. It is a 30 minute drive to the start of the famous Oregon Coast Scenic Highway, with day trips to the Oregon Dunes, Oregon Caves, Sea Lion Caves, Ashland Summer Theater, Britt Festival, jet boat rides up the Klamath and Rogue Rivers and many other adventures.
The weather here is absolutely some of the best in the country. The magazine, Scientific American recently ranked Del Norte County in the top five counties in the United States for the most perfect weather. We have mild summers 60s to 80s and mild winters 40s to 60s. We average about 90 inches of rain a year and that comes between November and May. But no one minds the rain, if you are a fisherman, it means more fish are coming up the river!

We arrived just before it began raining for two days. We got to watch the river go through the changes of rising and muddy to blue/green and perfect for fishing right from the living room window of this cozy log cabin in the woods. The owners were nearby to answer any questions we might have had, but greeted us upon arrival and filled us in on the simple workings of things. Having plentiful wood for the stove as well as Monitor heat to take the chill off while the fire takes off made it a cozy place to weather the storm and enjoy relaxing for the remainder of the week. The kitchen was well-stocked with all the pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, glassware and even a dishwasher to make clean up a breeze. Lots of books, puzzles, playing cards, pads to keep score gave us much to do while we waited out the storm. We will definitely be booking this pet-friendly place again. Bill, Renay and their dog, Sasha were wonderful hosts.
Actually unable to stay as it was totally booked but viewed the property and sat on the porch. It is an idyllic peaceful spot with a large shady lawn and pristine accessible river frontage. The Smith is a beautifully clear river and this was a prime area.
