Wonderful Home Base in Merida!

4 of 5
We just returned from an amazing two weeks in Merida based at Casa Del Sol. We absolutely loved Merida and our wonderful home there. Debora and David, the property managers, were extremely friendly and accommodating and were very responsive to any inquiries and needs (extra hangars, etc.). About the neighborhood - the house is a wonderful old colonial on a relatively quiet street about 10 minutes walk to the Grand Plaza, a five minute walk to the English Library or LA 68 for morning yoga with Raul, and a one minute walk to Dona Tere's amazing Cocina Economica on Calle 47, where I would have eaten every single meal (lunch at least) while there if my traveling companions would have let me. Two doors down is a little tienda, the owners of which were extremely accommodating, even lending me a squeezer to juice limes one evening. The neighbors across the street were super friendly and knowledgeable about the area and neighborhood - letting us know about a cenote located in the school down the street. Two Cantina's - one at each end of the block - were more than happy to make beer deliveries. It's a very easy walk to the Paseo de Mantejo, and if you are there on a Sunday, don't miss the opportunity to rent bikes! About the house itself - it's an incredible remodel - I went on two house tours and Casa Del Sol held up well in comparison. We were five in the house and had lots of room to spread out, and the big dining room table in the outside dining room was a great place for us to gather round with neighbors and new friends. The fountain was a nice touch, really lovely to hear the sound of the tinkling water especially in the evening. Couple of drawbacks were that the pool does not really get any direct sunlight, but you can catch some sun on the upstairs patio and also in the upstairs shower, which opens to a small private graveled courtyard. The other drawback was that hot water was at a minimum. Neither of which would keep me from staying at the house again. Lastly, Merida has mosquitoes...plan accordingly. The house has a wonderful vibe to it, as does all of this magical city. I am confident that you would enjoy your stay at Casa Del Sol. We are already looking forward to our return.

The favorite place for all of us!

5 of 5
Our family stayed here for just under a week on a vacation recently. While we stayed in a few lovely places on the Yucatan, the proximity to the ocean, the quiet beach, amenities that the house offers as well as flamingo viewing within walking distance made this place our favorite overall.I suggest stopping in Chicxulub for ice cream, panuchos and salbutos, and fresh fruits and vegetables. There is a stall owner in the small vegetable market with a guide to Maya fruits and vegetables that is great for those like myself who are unsure of what to do with new produce but want to try them. The kitchen is very well set up for cooking, beautiful dishes, easy to work in, with everything you might need. Jose, the caretaker allows the privacy you want while still taking care of the place and grounds. I enjoyed a trip to Telchac with him to buy fish one morning, later he made a delicious meal of ceviche for us, better than what we'd had at a restaurant on the Caribbean coast earlier in the week. Part of what attracted me to this home was the style. I'm so glad I chose it, we all loved looking at the open framing and palm roof in all its simplicity and beauty. I would be remiss if I did not include the helpful interactions with Carlos prior to our leaving for Mexico. He answered all my questions in a timely manner, sent along suggestions for what to see and do in the area and made us feel very welcome in his home. Thanks for the stay. We hope to return someday.

JUST PERFECT

5 of 5
Well, after two weeks here, we are just about finishing up our packing. I thought I would take several minutes and write about our perfect experience. After reading all the wonderful and totally accurate reviews of Casa Cruz (save for the one where I can only say that the renter had other issues) I decided to approach this review from a little different angle. First and foremost there is the manager, who without we would have been lost. Thank you for being so kind and patient with two gringos. Second, thank you to the owners, for having a home so well equipped that we needed for nothing. Although, we did buy more hangers....we are in Mexico for 3 months....so I have a lot of clothes. We have left the hangers for subsequent visitors. The house's charm and beauty definately added to the overall experience. Daily we chose a different direction to travel. From Progreso to Celestun to the PUUC Trail, to all the Parque's around the city....life was good! Thirdly, we were grateful for the friendly and helpful residents and professionals of the city. Even when stopped by the police for executing an illegal left turn.....the police were kind and helpful in getting us to where we wanted to go. No, we did not get a ticket....which my husband deserved! Fourthly, in 48 years of marriage I never have hung clothes on a line to dry. So now I know an old dog can learn new tricks.?. Lastly, take this opportunity to not only experience , taste and enjoy this remarkable city, but venture out.....you too may still look like a gringo.....but in your heart you are anything but....?
