Relaxing Oasis

5 of 5
We had a very relaxing 6 night stay in the lower apartment at Oasis del Mar. Our unit was well equipped and comfortable, the pool was great and Joanne was very welcoming and helpful. It would have been very easy to stay on for a longer period of time. We met many Canadians staying in Progreso for months over the winter and it seemed they had formed quite a friendly community. Although warm it cooled down enough at night that we were quite fine just using the many fans provided. It is about 9 blocks to the centre of town with lots of restaurants and shops and there are a few other restaurants and convenience stores that are closer. We usually went out for lunch or dinner and had the other meals in the apartment. We wanted a quiet place to relax and we were not disappointed. Highly recommend. Thanks.

I will be going here again!

5 of 5
Our 10 day stay was awesome! The north side of the house facing the beach is all windows, allowing for ocean views from anywhere in the kitchen and living room. The house is closer to the beach than any of the nearby houses, so it gave a feeling of seclusion, like you had the whole area to yourself. We cooked almost all of our meals on site and the kitchen was stocked with utensils, pans, storage containers, plates, cups and most important the coffee maker. There are fully stocked markets in Progresso or even three Walmarts in Merida to get groceries. We also did a lot of driving around (using maps instead of GPS... quite an adventure) we found 3 or 4 Cool Cenotes and Mayan ruins. We made a longer trip to the Uxmal ruins one day. Dzibilchaltun was a closer ruins, but Uxmal was definitely worth the extra drive! If you plan on visiting any Cenotes make sure to bring a snorkel mask or goggles, the water is crystal clear and it's a whole different experience under the water than just looking from the top. If you are looking for a peaceful, no obligation retreat without many tourists this is the place. Granted we were likely there in an off season, but we usually had hours of beach walking and she'll hunting to ourselves. If you need some touristy time Progresso was just 15-20 minutes away or Merida just under an hour away. We made many trips into both places, but then were able to come back "home" to our secluded retreat and relax. I would recommend eating a Ponchos in Merida if you do make it out of the house! Jose, the grounds keeper, was always nearby if you needed anything, but was also never intrusive. Carlos, the owner, was very responsive for any questions we had prior to and during the trip. If you think you might not be able to live without the internet/wifi... You should try it! We were apprehensive at first, but I really feel that was one of the reasons we were able to feel so relaxed. We brought a blue tooth speaker and some downloaded music and movies for entertainment when needed. If we had one regret, it would be that we should have learned a little Spanish before the trip. ( we knew absolutely none) it would have made things simpler in some cases, but we managed. If your looking for a relaxing time, off the beaten path, for an AWESOME price this is the place. We will be back!

Wonderful Home Base in Merida!

4 of 5
We just returned from an amazing two weeks in Merida based at Casa Del Sol. We absolutely loved Merida and our wonderful home there. Debora and David, the property managers, were extremely friendly and accommodating and were very responsive to any inquiries and needs (extra hangars, etc.). About the neighborhood - the house is a wonderful old colonial on a relatively quiet street about 10 minutes walk to the Grand Plaza, a five minute walk to the English Library or LA 68 for morning yoga with Raul, and a one minute walk to Dona Tere's amazing Cocina Economica on Calle 47, where I would have eaten every single meal (lunch at least) while there if my traveling companions would have let me. Two doors down is a little tienda, the owners of which were extremely accommodating, even lending me a squeezer to juice limes one evening. The neighbors across the street were super friendly and knowledgeable about the area and neighborhood - letting us know about a cenote located in the school down the street. Two Cantina's - one at each end of the block - were more than happy to make beer deliveries. It's a very easy walk to the Paseo de Mantejo, and if you are there on a Sunday, don't miss the opportunity to rent bikes! About the house itself - it's an incredible remodel - I went on two house tours and Casa Del Sol held up well in comparison. We were five in the house and had lots of room to spread out, and the big dining room table in the outside dining room was a great place for us to gather round with neighbors and new friends. The fountain was a nice touch, really lovely to hear the sound of the tinkling water especially in the evening. Couple of drawbacks were that the pool does not really get any direct sunlight, but you can catch some sun on the upstairs patio and also in the upstairs shower, which opens to a small private graveled courtyard. The other drawback was that hot water was at a minimum. Neither of which would keep me from staying at the house again. Lastly, Merida has mosquitoes...plan accordingly. The house has a wonderful vibe to it, as does all of this magical city. I am confident that you would enjoy your stay at Casa Del Sol. We are already looking forward to our return.
