JUST PERFECT

5 of 5
Well, after two weeks here, we are just about finishing up our packing. I thought I would take several minutes and write about our perfect experience. After reading all the wonderful and totally accurate reviews of Casa Cruz (save for the one where I can only say that the renter had other issues) I decided to approach this review from a little different angle. First and foremost there is the manager, who without we would have been lost. Thank you for being so kind and patient with two gringos. Second, thank you to the owners, for having a home so well equipped that we needed for nothing. Although, we did buy more hangers....we are in Mexico for 3 months....so I have a lot of clothes. We have left the hangers for subsequent visitors. The house's charm and beauty definately added to the overall experience. Daily we chose a different direction to travel. From Progreso to Celestun to the PUUC Trail, to all the Parque's around the city....life was good! Thirdly, we were grateful for the friendly and helpful residents and professionals of the city. Even when stopped by the police for executing an illegal left turn.....the police were kind and helpful in getting us to where we wanted to go. No, we did not get a ticket....which my husband deserved! Fourthly, in 48 years of marriage I never have hung clothes on a line to dry. So now I know an old dog can learn new tricks.?. Lastly, take this opportunity to not only experience , taste and enjoy this remarkable city, but venture out.....you too may still look like a gringo.....but in your heart you are anything but....?

Quiet, Beautiful, On the Beach!

5 of 5
This is a remote Villa right on the water! The pictures are realistic and you are literally 15 steps off the back deck into the Gulf of Mexico! You can walk for hours along the beach and never reach an 'end'. The house is fully equipped with all that you need (fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, gas stove top and oven, water dispenser, silverware (it's in the blue hutch in the dining room!), plates, glasses, pots/pans, and a BBQ! It has 3 bathrooms and showers, two bedrooms are upstairs - the master has a queen bed, and the 2nd room has two single beds. Each room is equipped with a ceiling fan and an air conditioner (although I didn't use the aircon because the open windows and ceiling fan were enough for me). The property itself is full of palm trees, white sand, and is very clean and very well maintained. The pool is clean and the water inviting!! After a dip in the ocean, you can take a rinse using the outdoor shower. Maria, the owner, is absolutely fantastic to deal with. She is fluent in English, responsive to your questions, and willing to go the extra mile to ensure you have the best experience in her home! Uaymitun is where the house is located. The first time driving there might feel like you'll never find it again, but it's very very easy to find and return to (no matter how many cervezas you've had!). The house is a 20 minute drive to Progreso, where you can go and get supplies and have some great meals (go to Barlovento!). North of the property, you can drive to Xcambo and visit Mayan ruins and along the way, you can visit a Flamingo habitat and the salt flats! YOU NEED A VEHICLE! That is a must. If you forgo the vehicle, you can take the Collectivo (local bus - it's a white van) into Chicxulub, then another Collectivo into Progreso. Just stand at the end of the driveway and wave down a white van...it will cost you 8 Pesos to Chicxulub and another 8 to Progreso. I spent two weeks here and on the fourth day, I had to check to ensure I still had a pulse... Thank you, Maria, for your attentiveness, friendliness, and for sharing your home! Cheers, Kim

Staying at Maison Azul

5 of 5
This is a beautiful home in the center of Merida. Tall ceilings and beautiful tiled floors are complimented with vintage armoires and seating. You can lounge in comfy couches in the library which is full of books including ones on Mexican design and cooking. Each room in the main house centers around the entry way and leads out to a lush interior courtyard. There is a covered porch where my family and I spent most of our time. Throughout the exterior, lights and fountains bring the space alive in the evenings. The well appointed kitchen has everything you need for making great meals. Bottled water and coffee maker are welcome amenities and the juicer led to some fine margaritas. Victoria comes into clean several days a week. Not sure we needed her there quite so often but she was very friendly. We ate at Apoala just down the street which was excellent. The owner supplied us with several emails giving us tips on places to eat, what fiestas were happening when...Really helpful for first time visitors like us. I would highly recommend Maison Azul to fellow visitors.
