We stayed four nights at Villa Bellamar. We had six couples celebrating several 40th birthdays. The house and pool were perfect! The house has so much to offer with comfortable bedrooms, multiple rooms for hanging out, balconies overlooking the pool for relaxing, a rooftop deck for watching sunsets, and a kitchen with all of the amenities you could want. The pool is awesome! Swim up bar, plenty seating, lounge chairs, and hammocks surrounding the pool, and the staff even set up a volleyball net across the pool.
The staff and service were fantastic! We had two chefs, Jose and Rafael, cooking full time and hired a full time bartender. The food was great and the chef service is a very affordable option (we spent about $8/person/meal). Fernando, our bartender, kept the drinks coming and had a great personality and attitude. We didn't see the maids and groundskeepers that often, but they kept everything spotless and in order. Wilma, the owner, was very responsive to my emails prior to us arriving and made sure that every request was met. And Juan Pablo, the proptery manager, stopped by each day to check on us.
The only downside to this location is the ocean access. Although the views are great from the house/pool and there is a pretty nice beach with lounge chairs for relaxing, entry into the water is limited by rocks. Swimming was pretty well limited to the pool. However, with the kayaks provided, there are ways to enjoy the water without swimming.
Our group loved this property and would definitely stay here again. We've already started discussing our next trip.
Logistically, it is a very easy drive from the airport that will take right at 1 hour. We rented cars because it was cheaper than paying a transport service and it gave us the option of going into Tulum or Playa del Carmen if we wanted to, which we did on two occassions. Additionally, it's about a mile from the house into Akumal center (stores, snorkeling, etc) so having a car made it easier.
If you are looking for quaint and relaxed, Akumal is the place. Very quiet with only a few stores, restaurants, and bars. You can find everything you need without all of the crowds and annoying touristy environment. We enjoyed some great snorkeling with the sea turtles right in Akumal and made several trips to one of the local bars, La Buena Vida. If you are looking for wild nightlife and partying until the sun comes up, Akumal is probably not your place.
