Beautiful, just beautiful!

5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay here. We were welcomed by Sylvia, who made sure that we were settled in. She was informative and personable and happy that we should call her with any further queries. The casita was clean and well maintained. The rooms were spacious, tastefully furnished and with fresh flowers on the table and milk and juice in the fridge. It was fantastic having the pool to cool off in on our return from days out. We'd definitely recommend this charming casita....we thought, more than once while there, how lovely it would be to share it with others. Thank you for making our stay comfortable!

Great choice for those looking for the real Merida

5 of 5
We are an older couple with quite a bit of Mexico experience under our belts over the decades. We were looking for an authentic neighborhood experience during an extended stay in Merida, and Casa Alux was perfect. It's proximity to the tourist attractions of Centro is very convenient - either hop on a collectivo for seven pesos or meander for the 25 minute walk to the grand plaza. We loved being near the Chen Bech market, and made fast friends with a couple of the vendors there. Street vendors make their way down the street, proceeded by their signature sounds - bells, bicycle horns - selling fresh fruit or sweet rolls. The room itself is spacious, well-equipped and quiet. We really appreciated the complimentary beverages awaiting us after a long flight. For those of you interested in cooking, the small kitchen has everything you'll need for simple meals. The bed mattress is firm and, to my delight, resulted in my first pain-free sleep in years. Black-out curtains allow a good night's sleep. The wifi made our local "high-speed" service seem pokey. The proprietors, Jesus and Stewart, are a delight and extremely helpful in orienting us and recommending restaurants, sights to see, etc. They stayed in close touch with us and made us feel very much at home. Recommended.

A Very Special House in a Very Special City

4 of 5
My husband, 12-year old daughter and I arrived on Christmas night and were let in by the property manager's daughter, Andy. She was very kind, spoke fluent English and helped us order a taxi to have dinner outside the city. The house is stunning - and huge - beautifully restored with gorgeous tile and woodworking. It has all the modern amenities one wishes while traveling (fully updated kitchen, air conditioning in the bedrooms), though be prepared for tepid shower water (never hot) and fairly low water pressure. We had a few minor inconveniences (the clothes dryer was broken and the satellite didn't work). A repair-man came to fix the latter and it was actually nice to not have a tv on for a few days. Merida is enchanting. We were within walking distance of the Zocalo, Paseo de Montejo and our favorite little square near the Hotel Casa San Angel where we ate many breakfasts because the coffee was amazing. Without exception, everyone we encountered in Merida was warm and welcoming. We immersed ourselves in the Yucatan culture with day trips to Uxmal and Chichen Itza and spent a glorious day at the Los Dos Cooking school learning to prepare a traditional Maya meal. We chose to not rent a car and instead relied on taxis which were very inexpensive (compared to L.A. & NYC) and easy to order even during the holidays. All in all we had a wonderful visit and will definitely return.
