Staying at Maison Azul

5 of 5
This is a beautiful home in the center of Merida. Tall ceilings and beautiful tiled floors are complimented with vintage armoires and seating. You can lounge in comfy couches in the library which is full of books including ones on Mexican design and cooking. Each room in the main house centers around the entry way and leads out to a lush interior courtyard. There is a covered porch where my family and I spent most of our time. Throughout the exterior, lights and fountains bring the space alive in the evenings. The well appointed kitchen has everything you need for making great meals. Bottled water and coffee maker are welcome amenities and the juicer led to some fine margaritas. Victoria comes into clean several days a week. Not sure we needed her there quite so often but she was very friendly. We ate at Apoala just down the street which was excellent. The owner supplied us with several emails giving us tips on places to eat, what fiestas were happening when...Really helpful for first time visitors like us. I would highly recommend Maison Azul to fellow visitors.

A Very Special House in a Very Special City

4 of 5
My husband, 12-year old daughter and I arrived on Christmas night and were let in by the property manager's daughter, Andy. She was very kind, spoke fluent English and helped us order a taxi to have dinner outside the city. The house is stunning - and huge - beautifully restored with gorgeous tile and woodworking. It has all the modern amenities one wishes while traveling (fully updated kitchen, air conditioning in the bedrooms), though be prepared for tepid shower water (never hot) and fairly low water pressure. We had a few minor inconveniences (the clothes dryer was broken and the satellite didn't work). A repair-man came to fix the latter and it was actually nice to not have a tv on for a few days. Merida is enchanting. We were within walking distance of the Zocalo, Paseo de Montejo and our favorite little square near the Hotel Casa San Angel where we ate many breakfasts because the coffee was amazing. Without exception, everyone we encountered in Merida was warm and welcoming. We immersed ourselves in the Yucatan culture with day trips to Uxmal and Chichen Itza and spent a glorious day at the Los Dos Cooking school learning to prepare a traditional Maya meal. We chose to not rent a car and instead relied on taxis which were very inexpensive (compared to L.A. & NYC) and easy to order even during the holidays. All in all we had a wonderful visit and will definitely return.

Stunning property, wonderful host!

5 of 5
The Casa Flor de Mayo is a colonial gem in the must-see historical center of Merida - the title of this listing is very apt indeed but if you've seen this place in real life you know that pictures cannot possibly do it justice! A stunning old building, meticulously restored and artfully renovated, full of quirky little details and gorgeously whimsical fixtures furnishings. The owner's love of the property is apparent in every inch of it and her distinctive personal touch gives the place a truly unique quality. Her kindness and hospitality, in addition, made a great experience even better. The house is conveniently located close to the city center yet far enough from all things touristic, in a lovely local neighborhood with lots of character and color. We loved strolling the streets of the area just soaking up the vibe! The garden and pool were a great respite after a hot day out in the city - and we were often tempted to spend the whole day there without leaving the house at all! We feel very privileged to have stayed in Casa Flor de Mayo and would heartily recommend it to all guests looking for individuality, style and comfort.
