                          LOVELY, REMOTE RETREAT

                          5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay in Tampalam. The house was very comfortable for our young family and we all loved playing in the clear, shallow waters. The beach is one of the most beautiful we've seen - extremely soft sand, turquoise waters and gradual shore. Perfect for our two small children! We also enjoyed the complete privacy afforded by the remote location. During our entire stay, we saw exactly one other person on the beach. The house is a good thirty minute drive from the nearest neighbor and close to an hour from the nearest town (Mahahual). Being alone on such a beautiful beach was a real treat. As with most any beach these days, depending on the currents, you will see trash and debris washed ashore. While the house and its beachfront is meticulously cleaned every day, there is debris located along the shore a few hundred meters down the beach. It was an important eye-opener for our whole family. It did not detract from our visit - indeed it enriched our experience - and we very much hope to return soon. Finally, Abraham, the caretaker, was fantastic. He helped our son look for hermit crabs, hung our hammock and brought us fresh coconuts every day.

                          MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR

                          5 of 5
This was our fifth trip to Mexico. We decided on Mahahual to escape the exponential growth of the Tulum area. I was looking for the perfect place: a clean, well maintained house, a beautiful, sandy swimming beach with good surf, walk in snorkeling, and no people. In short, a fantasy house and a tall order. When I found Casa Playa Maya, Amanda responded to my inquiry immediately. She replied to my many e mails with patience and great humor. After 20 hours of hard traveling, Amanda and Richard greeted us with open arms and a delicious dinner. As the week progressed, we realized what a wonderful wealth of local information they were. We were never let down by any of the advice they gave us, whether it was a dive with Gypsea Divers, an early morning outing to Chacchoben and Bacalar or a tip on where to pick up fruits and veggies in the pueblo. We have previously rented vacation houses throughout the Caribbean and US. Richard and Amanda are kind, trustworthy, hard working people, who want nothing more than for you have the most wonderful experience possible and will do anything they can to make that happen. Of all of the people we have dealt with in our many rental experiences, Amanda and Richard stand out as the best of the best. The house is a gem. It was spotlessly clean and everything was in working order, which is no small achievement for this part of the world. The pictures do not even begin to do it justice and cannot capture the open, airy and breezy spaces. The kitchen is as well equipped as my own at home. We did a major supply up in Tulum on the way down and cooked in most nights. We had fresh fish delivered to the door, as well as breads, fruits, and veggies, too. I am not a fan of cooking on vacation....However, here it was such a unique and satisfying experience that I didn't mind it as much as I thought I would. The snorkeling right off the beach was great. We are avid snorkelers, and this was some of the best "walk in" snorkeling we have done anywhere. When the surf was up, the swimming was amazing... We walked on the beach for miles and saw no one. The only negatives I can say have nothing to do with the house. It is a long drive from Cancun. And, we did miss the dining opportunities of the pueblo in Tulum. We also had tremendous difficulty getting cash. And lastly, the trash. We expected it, but it's still heartbreaking. What a global tragedy. Gracias, mis amigos. We will return!

                          CAN'T WAIT TO COME BACK!

                          5 of 5
The house was perfect, and the location was stunning. So calm and quiet and out of the way. We loved all of the animals: the geckos, crabs, iguanas, and especially the dogs. Whitney did an amazing, thorough, careful job of informing us in advance about everything we needed to know: Details about the house and the area, how to get there, what to expect, and things to do in the area. We were expecting the beach road to be in much worse condition than it was; it was really no problem at all to drive on (better than the highways around Baltimore, where we live!). The caretakers were very sweet and helpful, and stopped by every day to see if we needed anything. It was windy for our whole visit, so we didn't get to enjoy snorkeling as much as we'd hoped, but the wind meant very comfortable temperatures for sleeping at night and NO bugs (we didn't even see a single mosquito or fly). The dogs were lovely, especially the white deaf one—he adopted us and followed us on our walks up and down the beach every day. We loved the house, the beach, and Mahahual, and hope to come back soon. Thanks again, Whitney!
