Quiet and Secluded very Near Whiteface Mountain

4 of 5
We stayed at Whitebrook from 9/14/14 to 9/20/14. The property is being renovated as you can see in some of the photo's, do not judge this gem by the outside. The part of the lodge that is finished is great. Very cozy and comfortable with a king size bed, 2 gas fireplaces, a very large bathroom with a full size jacuzzi tub and an awesome shower. It has cable TV and WiFi. If you like secluded you will like this property it cannot be seen from the road. My only negative would be there is not much area for cooking in the cabin, but the owners have a gas grill outside that you can use and a picnic table in one of the unfinished rooms just off of the bedroom so it is not a big problem, we enjoyed going to the many restaurants in the area instead of cooking. There is a small grocery store in Wilmington with some of the essentials and they make some great sandwiches. Wilmington has some good restaurants, not many, but Lake Placid is only 10 miles away with plenty of dining available, not to mention all the olympic facilities from the 1932 and 1980 olympic games. We love to hike and one of the trails for whiteface mountain is literally almost in the backyard. I have probably failed to mention something, but I would highly recommend Whitebrook if you are looking for a peaceful, serene place for a getaway. Now a word or two about the owners, Dan and Judy. From when I first rented the property until we had left Judy answered all my questions about the property and the area either by phone conversation or text. The second day we were there we had a problem with the fireplace in the bedroom. Dan tried unsuccessfully to get a contractor on short notice to fix it, so he went and got the parts and went out of his way to come and fix it himself. Both of them are very kind people and want to make your stay enjoyable If you don't hike you have to ride the gondola to the top of little whiteface mountain and drive up the road to the big mountain and see the elevator there that was built when FDR was president, it is amazing. the road was only open on weekends due to road construction, but if you are staying through a weekend you have to check it out. I gave it 4 stars because you cannot do a half otherwise I would give it 41/2. I won't give it 5 because you might think I am related to Dan and Judy, LOL. If you are going to the Wilmington/Lake Placid area do yourself a favor and rent this property. The price is excellent compared to other places in the area.

Oh, we had such a lovely time!

5 of 5
We came for a week over Labor Day, and had a wonderful, relaxing, laid-back vacation that we both really needed. We had coffee or wine on the floating dock and just watched the tide turn, or went walking in the morning along the trails. There is a seal in the river, who comes up to watch, and eagles, a great blue heron and lots of ravens and crows and coyotes, all living right there. There were very few mosquitoes, just down in the marsh itself, and while there were some biting flies at Reid, the pass was also good for Popham Beach, which is only 20 minutes away, and that was perfect for a lazy beach day. We found that we went to Bath for our town needs rather than Georgetown (many closer food places including Five Islands close or limit hours after Labor Day, so Bath worked out much better). There is a cheap IGA for basics, and other places where you can get higher end goodies if you want. We really enjoyed the Bath Maritime Museum's river cruises--we got on the last wildlife cruise of the season, and saw lots of bald eagles, and then did one of the lighthouse cruises...and saw more eagles, seals, and even a sturgeon. We should have left more time for the museum, but we'll have to do that next time. Anyway--the property was very comfortable, clean and quiet. There is another guesthouse that seemed at first to be quite close from the front window--it turned out that we could hear them occasionally but it wasn't at all annoying. If you have a dog, there are two flights of stairs connected by a ramp every time they have to go out and the dog may have to learn to use the open stairs. One mild surprise is that I somehow thought there would be water down in the boathouse, but the water is out front--the boathouse is a repair and building area, but extremely well sound-insulated and quiet. There is lots of hot water for showers; the bed is comfortable. You will want spring water for ice cubes, cooking, drinking and brushing your teeth as the tap water is quite salty; Ruth and Sam start you out with a couple of gallons in the fridge. Get more at the IGA! And while you're there, go to the quirky old books shop, Remy's if you need anything mundane, the ice cream store, and get some ginger cardamom gelato to eat in the riverside park. Oh, and there really is only one dog beach during this time--it's right next to Fort Popham, not to be confused with Popham Beach. Double check anywhere you plan to take your dog--access varies widely. A great stay!

Beautiful place on the shore!

5 of 5
The apartment had plenty of room for the three of us, had everything you could possibly need and a few extras that were very thoughtfully left for us. The fire pit was fun at night and star gazing is particularly awesome - so many bright stars! Very relaxing and yet there is plenty to do. We loved kayaking at the blackwater refuge! Amazing wildlife at blackwater and at Hooper's Island. Enjoyed reading about the history of Hooper's Island too. Great weekend!
