We chose Eagle's Haven as a "change of venue" for an annual fishing trip our group of friends from several different states has been holding for a number of years. Also decided to change it from a "guys-only” weekend to family-oriented thing this time around. We had a group of 10 including spouses and two 10-year-old youngsters. We definitely found a winner with this location. We all loved it and will return for a longer stay next year.
We never met the managers/owners in person. However, they had been very helpful and prompt in answering questions by e-mail in advance of the trip. Moreover, it turned out they had clearly done their homework and anticipated most questions a guest might have during their stay. Hence, we never had any need to contact them while we were there. Driving directions were excellent. The cabin is very spacious, comfortable and charming. It was perfectly clean when we arrived. Meticulously maintained as well. We were pleasantly surprised to find it was much better stocked with cleaning supplies and paper goods than we were expecting (we'd brought all our own stuff in this respect, actually). All of the electrical switches, etc. are labeled so you don't have to fiddle to find out what switch turns on what. The cabin also contained a folder with clear instructions on how to operate everything. Owners seem to have solved any earlier issues with the 1 mile road to get the keys by implementing an easier system. We did not have to drive that particular road to get the keys first.
The area is beautiful, with great views from the porch. Would be absolutely breathtaking during peak of the fall foliage. South Mill Creek Lake is very close, offering fishing, boating, walking trails and pic-nic area. Fishermen should check the WV DNR web site since there are a couple of special regulations that apply to the lake, which don't apply elsewhere in the state.
I was already familiar with this part of Grant County before our stay at Eagle's Haven. So, already knew it was off the beaten path. Made double sure our group had all the food/drinks/toiletries/bait/ice, etc. we needed for our stay. Folks visiting there for the first time, though, should keep in mind that the nearest stores are 10 to 15 miles away in Petersburg or Moorefield. So, if you arrive and find you forgot to pack something, there's no such thing as "making a quick run out" to buy it.
Again, we had a great stay and were very happy with everything. We’ll definitely be coming back.
