Home away from home.

5 of 5
For the previous four years in a row we have been staying here at the home owned by Alfred and Jean Smith in Canaan Valley West Virginia. It is a wonderful place and so very simple, warm and cozy. The best get away! Its pet friendly too and, as such, relieves you of the task of trying to find somebody babysit your pets that you consider family. If you like to ski or if you like to horseback ride this is the place to be and that's why I continue to visit this getaway year after year! Thanks again Pete & and I will see you next year!

Beautiful mountain getaway

I stayed from January 18-22, 2010. The owners were friendly and easy to contact. The unit was great for my elderly dog as he did not have to climb any steps to get outside; the back door opens to a shared, unfenced patio and he could walk straight out onto the grass. Everything was immaculate when I got there, and the heat was already on in preparation for my arrival. Plenty of extra towels and linens, and artifical logs were stocked for my use. Internet connection was a simple cable hookup. I enjoyed a trail ride at the stables down the road, and local restaurants Sirianni's Italian Cafe and Hellbender Burritos had fabulous food. They are across the street from each other in Davis, WV. Shop and Save grocery store and Dollar store are next to each other if you need to pick up anything extra. Saw wild turkeys and deer in the woods. Owners provided a helpful scrapbook with information on local activities and restaurants. My recommendations are to get directions, as the place is a little hard to find and my GPS found the entire area baffling. Also, turn on the hot water in the morning while you're brushing your teeth; you will be done brushing long before it gets warm, then you can wash your face.

Very nice country get-away.

The inside and outside of this home have great atmosphere. It's in a little country neighborhood next to the wildlife refuge, so you have some neighbors around, but woods out back. Inside is clean and well-maintained, with decorations fitting the rural area, but new, modern kitchen appliances and a fancy hottub. The deck and hot-tub area are out back where the view is -- since there is a little forest out there, you might have a few leaves/dead branches to sweep. We found the beds comfortable -- on the firmer side, as we like them. Nice place to either just hang out and relax, or explore and hike the area.
