Unplug and relax!

5 of 5
Looking for your “typical” vacation rental on the Hood Canal, the Historic Balch Retreat is not it. If you want to feel as though your best friends have lent you their personal water front residence, complete with warm furnishings, antiques, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds, then you have come to the right place. From the moment you step through the front door you feel as though you have stepped back in time to the days when life on the Hood Canal was simpler and more relaxed. The charm of this 1920’s waterfront home is carried throughout in even the smallest of details. This home is all about relaxation and detaching yourself from the stress of everyday life. Unplug and curl up with a good book. Marvel at the abundance of wildlife right outside your back door. Seals, sea lions, Eagles, and varieties of sea birds too numerous to list. Even the occasional raccoon family scampering through the yard. To get more up close & personal with nature, hop in the canoe and take a leisurely trip along the banks. If you're lucky you will have plenty of curious seals to escort you. After canoeing, take a walk along the banks and look for shells. Don’t forget your camera! After sunset, light a fire in the fire pit and make s’mores. Your kids will remember this far longer than what was on the TV that night. A few recommendations to make your stay a memorable experience. • Take your groceries. The local store is not well stocked. It is okay if you run out of milk, but beyond that, the nearest store is 23 miles away. • This is the Pacific Northwest. If you want sandy beaches, go to California. • Despite what yo may think, the owners cannot arrange for elk or deer, or other wild animals to parade past your door as you eat your breakfast. They are wild and come and go as they please. • While the house does sleep 9, 6 might be more comfortable. The dining table seats 6. The living room also seats 6, comfortably, with possibly room for two more for short periods. Don't overcrowd the place, especially in the winter months, too many people could impact your relaxation time. We actually had the pleasure of meeting Tori & Wade and we can tell you that you won't meet two nicer people who truly care about their guests. In nearly every way the Historic Balch Retreat exceeded our expectations. Do not pass up the Historic Balch Retreat. Just please save us a long weekend here and there. We will return.

More than Meets the Eye!

The pictures in the listing just don't do this property justice! It is impeccably maintained, and it felt as if I had been living there for years as soon as I walked in the front door. The views from the kitchen and master bedroom are incredible and I lingered over breakfast many times just soaking in the view. I was there with a group of 4 other adults and we found the accommodations more than enough for our group. The neighborhood was great- we had pastries one morning from Finn's bakery (amazing) and it was less than 4 minutes by car to get to the grocery store to pick up some essentials for the weekend. Lynn, the property owner, was great to work with as well. Being a first-timer in Seattle I had questions on hiking and other outdoor activities, where to go for dinner, etc. Lynn was quick to respond and gave extremely helpful information and recommendations. She even reached out to a friend of hers for additional thoughts on the best day hike to take from the house. I'm not sure when I'll make it back to Seattle, but I know that whenever I am back, I'll know exactly where it is I want to stay!!

What a treat!

5 of 5
Had a wonderful time enjoying island activities and playing at Garrison Bay. The children Loved the deer who visited daily as well as the toys in the toy chest. Indoor and outdoor toys were available, saved me from packing toys. The home itself is extremely comfy. Very and I do mean Very clean. We cooked most nights and appreciated the kitchen being so well stocked. Even spices. The front lawn is massive, great space for all of us to enjoy. It lead directly to the beach where we not only played in the water at the shore, but easy to use our inflatable we brought along. The fire pit was used almost daily. Thank you Susan for the s'mores kit. Loved the s'mores for the adults too. Italian style and spiked. We booked an Italian Night and it was amazing. Susan and Ed showed us so many helpful hints on cooking down home Italian food. Not like restaurant fare for sure, so much better and lots easier. Can't think of any Cons other than the water was chilly, if Susan and Ed could control that, they would! Definitely plan to return. Great location for a romantic weekend, family gathering or any kind of visit. We were two families with children. Best vacation ever.
