Unplug and relax!

5 of 5
Looking for your “typical” vacation rental on the Hood Canal, the Historic Balch Retreat is not it. If you want to feel as though your best friends have lent you their personal water front residence, complete with warm furnishings, antiques, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds, then you have come to the right place. From the moment you step through the front door you feel as though you have stepped back in time to the days when life on the Hood Canal was simpler and more relaxed. The charm of this 1920’s waterfront home is carried throughout in even the smallest of details. This home is all about relaxation and detaching yourself from the stress of everyday life. Unplug and curl up with a good book. Marvel at the abundance of wildlife right outside your back door. Seals, sea lions, Eagles, and varieties of sea birds too numerous to list. Even the occasional raccoon family scampering through the yard. To get more up close & personal with nature, hop in the canoe and take a leisurely trip along the banks. If you're lucky you will have plenty of curious seals to escort you. After canoeing, take a walk along the banks and look for shells. Don’t forget your camera! After sunset, light a fire in the fire pit and make s’mores. Your kids will remember this far longer than what was on the TV that night. A few recommendations to make your stay a memorable experience. • Take your groceries. The local store is not well stocked. It is okay if you run out of milk, but beyond that, the nearest store is 23 miles away. • This is the Pacific Northwest. If you want sandy beaches, go to California. • Despite what yo may think, the owners cannot arrange for elk or deer, or other wild animals to parade past your door as you eat your breakfast. They are wild and come and go as they please. • While the house does sleep 9, 6 might be more comfortable. The dining table seats 6. The living room also seats 6, comfortably, with possibly room for two more for short periods. Don't overcrowd the place, especially in the winter months, too many people could impact your relaxation time. We actually had the pleasure of meeting Tori & Wade and we can tell you that you won't meet two nicer people who truly care about their guests. In nearly every way the Historic Balch Retreat exceeded our expectations. Do not pass up the Historic Balch Retreat. Just please save us a long weekend here and there. We will return.

Serenity and Privacy on Puget Sound

5 of 5
Let me start by saying that my husband and I are very picky about two things: privacy and comfortable bedding. Olympic View surpassed our expectations on both of these items. Dave and Eileen were laid back but very attentive to our needs. Our flight arrived late from the east coast and we became miserably lost trying to get to the cottage (our issue, not theirs--we are notorious for getting lost). Dave was amazingly patient and talked us all the way 'home', staying on the phone until we started up the drive. The town of Burien is very convenient to Seattle. The beach is a short walk away from the cottage and the views are outstanding! This location also afforded us an opportunity to explore the mountains, Rainier, the ocean, and it was all within a convenient drive. We even did the Twin Peaks nostalgia tour, visiting Snoqualmie and North Bend. The cottage was just the right size for the two of us and was comfortably furnished. Without question, we would highly recommend this cottage for comfort and convenience. Thank you Dave and Eileen, for a memorable stay on our first explorations into the Pacific Northwest! We will be back.

Beautiful, hand-crafted little cottage.

4 of 5
The cottage was all that was advertised and more. The wrap-around deck, the privacy, the big windows looking over the bay - wonderful. I was sad that I did not have more time to just enjoy the space, but we traveled all over the peninsula, from Port Angeles to the Ho Rainforest. I would have given it a 5 star, but the master bed needs to be replaced and there is a rather sour smell in the bathroom. I would come back, and I would recommend this home to any traveler who likes authenticity and a place that isn't trying to be a fancy hotel, but is a home away from home. The owners go out of their way to provide all the little things. We left our dog one day, and she barked so much that the neighbors complained; Debby come by and gave her a walk. Also, I had a business package hand delivered by owners. Where on earth can you get that kind of hospitality?
