Unplug and relax!

5 of 5
Looking for your “typical” vacation rental on the Hood Canal, the Historic Balch Retreat is not it. If you want to feel as though your best friends have lent you their personal water front residence, complete with warm furnishings, antiques, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds, then you have come to the right place. From the moment you step through the front door you feel as though you have stepped back in time to the days when life on the Hood Canal was simpler and more relaxed. The charm of this 1920’s waterfront home is carried throughout in even the smallest of details. This home is all about relaxation and detaching yourself from the stress of everyday life. Unplug and curl up with a good book. Marvel at the abundance of wildlife right outside your back door. Seals, sea lions, Eagles, and varieties of sea birds too numerous to list. Even the occasional raccoon family scampering through the yard. To get more up close & personal with nature, hop in the canoe and take a leisurely trip along the banks. If you're lucky you will have plenty of curious seals to escort you. After canoeing, take a walk along the banks and look for shells. Don’t forget your camera! After sunset, light a fire in the fire pit and make s’mores. Your kids will remember this far longer than what was on the TV that night. A few recommendations to make your stay a memorable experience. • Take your groceries. The local store is not well stocked. It is okay if you run out of milk, but beyond that, the nearest store is 23 miles away. • This is the Pacific Northwest. If you want sandy beaches, go to California. • Despite what yo may think, the owners cannot arrange for elk or deer, or other wild animals to parade past your door as you eat your breakfast. They are wild and come and go as they please. • While the house does sleep 9, 6 might be more comfortable. The dining table seats 6. The living room also seats 6, comfortably, with possibly room for two more for short periods. Don't overcrowd the place, especially in the winter months, too many people could impact your relaxation time. We actually had the pleasure of meeting Tori & Wade and we can tell you that you won't meet two nicer people who truly care about their guests. In nearly every way the Historic Balch Retreat exceeded our expectations. Do not pass up the Historic Balch Retreat. Just please save us a long weekend here and there. We will return.

Perfect!

The house is so cute and clean! The owners, Sande and Peter, keep the kitchen well-stocked for those who like to cook while watching the deer eat apples and chase bunnies in the backyard (or one of the adjacent backyards). I was impressed that the bookshelves were stocked and I found quite a few really good books! The house is also very close to Ft. Casey State Park which has so much going on, you hardly know where to start. Going into the park you see the old gun battery with watchtowers and cannons, there is a lighthouse, a huge field for kites, and plenty of picnic tables. We spent the whole first day there and had a great time! On our way out we stopped at Double Bluff Beach, which was amazing and would only be about a 10 minute drive from the house. The beach is sandy but we found many seashells buried in it as well as in the low tide. The water on this particular beach does not get deep very fast or have very large waves, so you can wade out pretty far without worry. All in all, it was a great time. Thanks!
