Unplug and relax!

5 of 5
Looking for your “typical” vacation rental on the Hood Canal, the Historic Balch Retreat is not it. If you want to feel as though your best friends have lent you their personal water front residence, complete with warm furnishings, antiques, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds, then you have come to the right place. From the moment you step through the front door you feel as though you have stepped back in time to the days when life on the Hood Canal was simpler and more relaxed. The charm of this 1920’s waterfront home is carried throughout in even the smallest of details. This home is all about relaxation and detaching yourself from the stress of everyday life. Unplug and curl up with a good book. Marvel at the abundance of wildlife right outside your back door. Seals, sea lions, Eagles, and varieties of sea birds too numerous to list. Even the occasional raccoon family scampering through the yard. To get more up close & personal with nature, hop in the canoe and take a leisurely trip along the banks. If you're lucky you will have plenty of curious seals to escort you. After canoeing, take a walk along the banks and look for shells. Don’t forget your camera! After sunset, light a fire in the fire pit and make s’mores. Your kids will remember this far longer than what was on the TV that night. A few recommendations to make your stay a memorable experience. • Take your groceries. The local store is not well stocked. It is okay if you run out of milk, but beyond that, the nearest store is 23 miles away. • This is the Pacific Northwest. If you want sandy beaches, go to California. • Despite what yo may think, the owners cannot arrange for elk or deer, or other wild animals to parade past your door as you eat your breakfast. They are wild and come and go as they please. • While the house does sleep 9, 6 might be more comfortable. The dining table seats 6. The living room also seats 6, comfortably, with possibly room for two more for short periods. Don't overcrowd the place, especially in the winter months, too many people could impact your relaxation time. We actually had the pleasure of meeting Tori & Wade and we can tell you that you won't meet two nicer people who truly care about their guests. In nearly every way the Historic Balch Retreat exceeded our expectations. Do not pass up the Historic Balch Retreat. Just please save us a long weekend here and there. We will return.

Serenity and Privacy on Puget Sound

5 of 5
Let me start by saying that my husband and I are very picky about two things: privacy and comfortable bedding. Olympic View surpassed our expectations on both of these items. Dave and Eileen were laid back but very attentive to our needs. Our flight arrived late from the east coast and we became miserably lost trying to get to the cottage (our issue, not theirs--we are notorious for getting lost). Dave was amazingly patient and talked us all the way 'home', staying on the phone until we started up the drive. The town of Burien is very convenient to Seattle. The beach is a short walk away from the cottage and the views are outstanding! This location also afforded us an opportunity to explore the mountains, Rainier, the ocean, and it was all within a convenient drive. We even did the Twin Peaks nostalgia tour, visiting Snoqualmie and North Bend. The cottage was just the right size for the two of us and was comfortably furnished. Without question, we would highly recommend this cottage for comfort and convenience. Thank you Dave and Eileen, for a memorable stay on our first explorations into the Pacific Northwest! We will be back.

Lovely setting and great house!

5 of 5
I must confess I was a little nervous up until the day before our arrival here, since I had some difficulty getting in touch with the owner. HOWEVER, once she contacted us, she was right on everything! Tina is conscientious and fair and dealt with a broken hot tub and dishwasher until they were fixed and even gave us a cut on price in the end for the inconvenience. Don't stress if you don't hear from her--she's trustworthy and busy with many properties, and she WILL come through for you! :) She even personally sent my dad's cell phone to him when we figured out he'd left it behind in the house. The house is lovely and HUGE. We ended up renting out the basement in addition to the rest of the house, which gives you additional sleeping spaces, another bathroom and another kitchen! The three bedrooms in the main part of the house are all comfortably decked out with all you need. One has a fireplace; one has a balcony; and all have private bathrooms, (all with big fluffy towels) which was GREAT for our whole family that was gathering for my son's wedding. The kitchen is spectacular and large and very convenient for preparing your own meals. Everything you could need is provided. Everything is top-notch. Of course, the star of the show with this house is the view. Every morning, we'd all gasp at the lovely view of the sound out the windows of the kitchen/living room/dining area. You could do nothing but sit and be perfectly content. The house sits on a private road and is very quiet and peaceful. It's a nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city without being so far removed that you can't get around. We found it to be a good central point for all the wedding activities we were involved in (which took place in Northgate, Mountview Terrace and Arlington) and were very happy we had picked somewhere a little off the beaten path for the downtime we were able to spend with our family during the wedding craziness. Thanks, Tina, for your patience and persistence and for the lovely home you've opened up to people. We hope we can return someday!
