Perfect Anniversary Getaway

5 of 5
We spent a long weekend out here and wish we booked for more time! It was such a relaxing getaway! We were looking for a pet-friendly vacation home to stay in to celebrate 15 years of marriage with the entire family. Penelope provided helpful instructions on getting here. We were welcomed with a warm fire roaring in the Franklin stove as we entered the house. We were so happy and relieved to find a high-quality home to stay in for the next few days. The furniture and décor was impressive! The dining table truly brought out the home's rustic charm. It was rainy on the day we arrived but we were still captivated by the window views that can be seen looking towards the water. The weather was perfect the next few days. This was the best time to be out in the woods! It wasn't too cold but crisp enough to keep the summer bugs away (no mosquito bites!). Our two boys never wanted to go inside! It was a nice change to see them play outside instead of inside playing video games or watching TV. We got to fish and canoe in the river. The water was so still and calm! We were able to see the bottom of the river at the dock and dug up giant oysters in the bed. The fall leaves were beautiful at this time of year. We shot our family portraits out here with the dock and the autumn leaves as our backdrop. Thanks for sharing your home with us. The whole family (including the dogs!) had a wonderful, relaxing time! We look forward to visiting again! :)

Very much "at home" at Fish Tales

5 of 5
We were delighted with this house, and enjoyed a very relaxing vacation. The VRBO rental process was easy, and Catherine was very helpful. About half of our days here were rainy, but we didn't mind because there are an incredible number of books, fiction and non-fiction, as well as games, televisions, wifi, and places to doze off and relax. Catherine provides more than the typical rental home owner to make your stay carefree. The house was clean & well-stocked, and the view from the deck is soothing. Be sure you get up in time for a sunrise or two. One note: the kitchen is small but has most everything you will need, but there is no conventional oven - just the large convection oven on the counter, so my large muffin pan would not fit. Just be prepared for smaller projects if you want to do any baking. Fish Tales has a large, comfortable den on the bottom level with a huge flat-screen TV, a mid-level living room with water views & TV, and a larger-than-expected loft on the top level that also has comfortable seating & TV. This allowed us to find quiet spots when we wanted to spend solitary time reading or working (or napping). The wifi service worked very well. The upper deck is huge, and the lower level has a screened porch with comfortable seating. You easily forget that you are in a neighborhood, because the setting feels very secluded. We would certainly welcome the opportunity to stay at Fish Tales again, and the dog agrees!

Birthday celebration

5 of 5
We wanted to celebrate my husband's 65th birthday on the Chesapeake Bay so we choose the area of southeast Virginia. We needed a place that would be comfortable for 3 adults and this home met our requirements. The cottage was very nicely equipped and the kitchen setup was the best we have had at a Homeaway rental. The beds are very comfortable and no one had any trouble sleeping. One of the best benefits was - we were far enough for the city lights to really view the stars a night. On Friday we spotted a bald eagle and a blue bird... total shock and amazement. We were able to relax in the hot tub and get in some exercise in on the bikes. My husband has never sailed on the bay or had fresh crab cakes and he got to do both. Robert was very helpful and directed us to the Neptune Festival which was having a regatta has part of the celebration. My husband was able to catch a ride on a 37 foot f sailboat for the Neptune Atlantic Regatta and he had a blast! Afterwards we had dinner at the Surfrider and the crab cakes were perfect. We highly recommend the Mathews area for the peace and quiet - and the drive is not difficult into the Newport or Norfolk. The only thing I can think that would have improved our stay would have been the addition of a grab-bar to assist getting out to the footed tub, otherwise it was wonderful! Thank you Robert!
