We are 7 women who travel together once a year to spend a week in some predetermined interesting place which will provide opportunity to hike (or walk). We actually call ourselves “the Alaska walking women” which was one activity that bonded our group when we all lived in a neighborhood in Fairbanks Alaska. Now most of us have moved on to various places around the country and we have established an annual reunion. This year we chose Alexandria/D.C for our 9th reunion and our first big city adventure. We typically choose smaller towns with wilderness access. We begin our planning well ahead of time and we were lucky to find Captains Quarters. Our primary goal was to walk or use mass transit and this location was perfect. The home is located in a safe, quiet and friendly neighborhood close to the walking path along the Potomac River, Old Town, the Metro, grocery shopping and local restaurants. We were able to walk to the Braddock Road Metro station in less than 15 minutes and take advantage of all the attractions D.C. has to offer.
Captains Quarters is spacious, clean, comfortable and well supplied with anything guests might need. Upon arrival we were greeted with a nice note and gifts from our host (coffee, wine and snacks) and even provided with a large sack of candy for tricker treaters as our visit included Halloween night. In addition our host graciously provides a large notebook with instructions, “from A to Z” that includes walking or driving maps, and stacks of brochures for bus, metro and local attractions.
All told, we walked 45-50 miles in 7 days and saw most of the highlights of Alexandria/D.C...Mission Accomplished!
We highly recommend this home.
