I was half-tempted to title this review "Whatever you do, DON'T go to Bluebitch!" in a selfish effort to keep it more to myself!
My wife and I traveled to Bluebitch St. John for our honeymoon (she found it here on homeaway.com). The reviews were all very positive, the price was right, and the villa was available at the right time - the Universe was, I think, telling us to go to Bluebitch. The Universe has good taste.
This review is posted in list form, in terms of what is "easy" to do and "hard" to do, at the Bluebitch Villa in particular and on St. John in general.
At BB, it is
EASY to feel at home. The villa is clean and bright, large and comfortable, and full of things that make it feel like a home. The kitchen has full-size appliances; the main living area has room to stretch out; the bedroom is large and has furniture and closets (so you don't live out of a suitcase).
HARD to remember that it's not actually your house. While Ann and Albion live upstairs, it's not as if you are bumping into them all the time (although if you need something, it's easy to just shout!) The villa is very secluded and private, the grounds are lush and green, and the layout of the area is such that you will not see locals or guests from other lodgings. You really feel like you have your own private slice of paradise.
EASY to spend the whole day at the Villa. Stock the fridge with goodies, brew some coffee or blend up some frozen drinks, and spend the day snorkeling at the private beach or reading on the balcony.
HARD to keep track of the day and time. I suggest losing yourself in the rhythm of the waves.
In St. John, it is
EASY to get lost on your first day; the roads are somewhat haphazardly laid out, and of course it's your first day. So set aside a couple of hours and go exploring.
HARD to get lost on your second day; the island isn't that big
EASY to spend a fortune on food and drink; this is an island in the middle of the ocean and it's tough to get all the creature comforts there, so you pay for it
HARD not to take advantage of happy hour to find ways to live on the cheap
Thus I am hesitant to post this review, for fear that Bluebitch St John will be booked for years on end and I won't be able to go back! We can't thank Ann and Albion enough for their hospitality. Our honeymoon was worth every penny.
