I stayed at Edgewater/Gentle Winds with my wife, mom, 3.5 year-old, and almost 2 year-old, for 10 days this past December. Our stay was excellent, and since returning, not a day goes by, that we don't reminisce about our getaway.
Gentle Winds Condos are located on the northern part of St. Croix, adjacent to what I would call the beginning of the rolling, verdant part of the island. The location is very serene and secluded, but is only 15 minutes from downtown Christiansted, and perhaps 20 minutes from downtown Frederiksted. In addition, Gentle Winds is only a few minutes from Cane Bay, where you can find some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the Caribbean. The beach at Gentle Winds, is one of the best "private" beaches that we visited on the island. There are always available palapas at the beach, as well as chairs and even a hammock under the palms. The swimming pool has been upgraded in the past couple of years, making it one of the best in the area. There is also a "snack shack" by the pool, that serves up tasty Caribbean cocktails and food.
Near the beach, there is a kid's play area, located under some tropical trees, where one can find hermit crabs and lizards everywhere. There is a kid's picnic table, along with a wooden, hand built "pirate ship". Our kids loved this little area.
The grounds of Gentle Winds are impeccably maintained, and there is a security guard/gatehouse about 1/2 mile in from the winding entrance. Sometimes, we seemingly had the whole beach to ourselves. You certainly won't have to get out of bed at 6 AM, to "reserve" a spot under one of the 15 palapas.
The unit itself is spacious, updated, well decorated and clean, with brilliant vistas of the grounds, pool and sea. At night, you can fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing about 30-50 yards out into the sea. John and Jo are the owners, and their customer service is impeccable. If there is an issue, they will attempt to solve it immediately. The Wi-Fi in the unit works well, and connectivity is steady. The refrigerator took awhile to cool items and freeze ice, but that can be attributed to being in the tropics. Sometimes (2 times in 10 days) the power in parts of the island will go down for a bit, but it is just the power company on St. Croix. At night, if you are in the upper master suite, you will want the sliding door open, to cool down with the breeze, and to hear the waves crashing. We would definitely stay here again!
