Unique Property with Spectacular Views

5 of 5
The Eco Retreat is a special place. We wanted privacy, nature, charm, creature comforts and a bit of adventure. The Retreat provided all of that and more. The views are spectacular. Allison, our very accommodating owner, did everything possible to make our stay pleasant, including picking up our groceries from Star Market. She is extremely responsive to questions and requests and a pleasure to deal with. She even keeps a cell phone at the house in case your service doesn’t work. Both beds are extremely comfortable with nice linens, and the open-air bedroom is like no other place you will rest your head. You wake up to birdsong and a Caribbean sunrise. The kitchen has everything you need to cook, but it's not the type of home where you will want to prepare complex meals that involve many pans and serving dishes. Use the time you save washing dishes by hand to sit on the deck! We cooked big breakfasts and packed lunches and ate out the other evenings. Coral Bay has great restaurants, including Indigo Grill, Skinny Legs, Pickles and Aqua Bistro. Some considerations. You definitely need a four-wheel drive jeep to get up to the house and then you climb 45 steps. Your water is heated by the sun, so it's warm, not hot. (We found it refreshing after a long day.) We always had electricity from the solar panels, but we were careful to only use what we needed. The power went out a few times on St. John but not for us! You should be the kind of person who laughs and grabs the camera when a gecko invades your space, and love having banana quits eat sugar from your hand and hummingbirds zoom by your head. All of this added to the appeal of the house for us. We were there in the dry season. You may or may not find the mosquitoes to be a problem. My daughter had multiple bites, I had some and my other friend had none. My daughter may have been bitten on the beaches and in the woods as we saw no mosquitoes or flying insects at the house, probably due to the constant breeze. She started using OFF Botanical Lotion (plant-based ingredient found in eucalyptus plants) and that seemed to help. I loved being off the grid. I have Verizon so my phone never worked anywhere on St. John. The internet wasn’t always reliable (a function of the island). I adjusted immediately and left the real world behind. I highly recommend you do the same, and start by renting Allison’s retreat.

Beautiful, peaceful house and neighborhood!

5 of 5
Thank you Chad, Winty and Betty for making our stay at Estate Coral Reef one of the best vacations we ever had. Chad was so helpful with everything and so willing to answer all of my hundreds of questions regarding the house and the island. (It was our first time to St. Croix!) As Chad assured us, once we got used to driving on the left hand side of the road, it was quite easy to get around the entire island. Winty met us at the airport, helped us get our jeep rental, helped us with our bags and we followed him to the house. We were so pleasantly pleased to see they had provided some basic groceries to help get us settled in to the house. We actually snacked on everything they provided throughout the entire week. I had asked Chad if he had any family board games at the house prior to our arrival, and he said the house did not have any games. When we got to the house, we discovered several fun board games, cards and dominoes. The next day, Betty was so sweet to drop by the house and bring our favorite family game, Risk! Betty even surprised us again by bringing some local cakes that her mother used to make for her family whenever they traveled to the other side of the island. We were happy to bring them with us on our beach excursions. They were light, simple and delicious. The house was absolutely stunning. It was very well maintained and the pool was in perfect condition. We spent many evenings grilling by the pool. The beach by the house was a short walk though the neighborhood. You can even see some of the old ruins of the plantation from hundreds of years ago. The beach was rough but we did see some surfers out in the water. The beach was covered in coral and beautiful sea glass. It was like hunting for treasures. The best part was hearing the waves crashing into the rocks even at night. It was very soothing. Must do's: Buck Island, shopping & dining downtown and on the boardwalk, Rainbow beach, Cruzan Rum Distillery tour (get the Mango Hurricane), BBQ buffet at the Hotel on the Cay on Tuesday evenings. Make sure to spend at least one whole day snorkeling, diving or just hanging out at Cane Bay beach. Two great restaurants right on the beach and a full service dive shop. The beach was not crowded at all and the views are incredible. Chad, Winty and my sweet Betty - thank you for making our trip so memorable! We will be back!

Just Perfect!!!

5 of 5
Just perfect! This was one of the best vacations we've had. The condo was just as expected, positioned right on the beach with exquisite view of the water. The beach is clean and the waters are calm. We liked that there is some natural shade provided by the sea grape trees along the shore - we spent the whole day out by the water enjoying the sun, air and quiet. The resort itself is on the east end, conveniently located within walking distance to Red Hook where we took the ferry over to St. John's for a day. There are a bunch of restaurant and bars in Red Hook as well, that we tried out. We very much enjoyed staying here and are planning to come back again.
