We absolutely loved our time at Whale Watch! We agreed we wouldn't stay anywhere else if we come back to St. John! The house is beautiful and the location is the best (unless you're into a lot of night life and crowded tourist attractions. Of course, then St. John is not your island.) The view is spectacular and the house is built to make the most of that. We ate almost every breakfast and dinner out on the deck overlooking the ocean. We usually took lunch with us in the cooler provided. There was a grill and the kitchen was well stocked for cooking. (We did our main grocery shopping in Cruz Bay when we first arrived.) A Jeep is a must and driving is not for the faint-hearted on the island, but it is so worth it! My hubby didn't mind driving on the left or the switchbacks, but we were glad we arrived at Whale Watch in daylight for the first time. We rented snorkeling gear at Crabby's (where Marie works part time) & snorkeled every day. It was fabulous! We especially enjoyed the snorkeling around Waterlemon Cay, Great Lamishur Bay, and Saltpond Bay. We also enjoyed Hawksnest Bay and snorkeling toward the west part of Cinnamon Bay. We saw sea turtles at Saltpond Bay and Cinnamon Bay. Haulaway Bay has cool snorkeling, too, but watch the sea urchins on the rocky way in. The snorkeling right on the beach at the bottom of Whale Watch's hill was pretty cool, too. There is an absolute forest of giant, colorful sea fans waving in the current down there. It was too rough to get around the point, though. We took Marie's kayaks out one day, too. That was great. Marie was fabulous. She shows you the place & then gives you as much privacy as you want. (She lives downstairs, but she makes a point to be as invisible as you want.) We enjoyed spending some time with her, though. She took us out on the yacht she captains for a half day. She took us to some more difficult places to get to for us to snorkel among mangroves and a reef to far from shore to be easily accessible. The only shower is right outside the bedroom. It was really cool taking a shower under a full moon that reflected both on the salt pond and ocean. Beautiful! We went in July and didn't see a single mosquito the entire time on the island. When we left, we really missed the house and the sound of the waves crashing, especially at night. What a beautiful sound to go to sleep to! We'd love to go back and recommend this place to every one!
