Off the Charts!

5 of 5
This was hands down one of the best vacation retreats I've ever taken. Off the Grid, Off the Beaten Path and Off the Charts- phenomenal! Part tree house, part sail boat/sail loft, the house is a labor of love, very thoughtful and inviting. The views were spectacular, trade winds welcoming and the night sky felt within reach with a gazillion stars. I opted not to rent a jeep and although strenuous hiking it was well worth the effort. There are a number of amazing beaches and ruins within hiking distance if you are up for what I came to call a "Bootcamp for the Soul". Off the Beaten Track (copy in the house) will be your bible, it is dog-eared for good reason. This is the best place to unplug and decompress- listen to the cacophony of nature, and reenter your sensory world. Allison went over and above to ensure that my stay was enjoyable and memorable. I would go back in a heartbeat. Can't imagine a better home-base for a revival of the spirit. This gem way up on the hillside made for a genuine eco-adventure on St. John.

Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone

5 of 5
I stayed in the Island Gardens vacation rental for a week and half at the end of April, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. It's clean, quiet, airy, well-provisioned, and Marcia and John were very welcoming and accommodating. I had a great time. I didn't rent a vehicle because I intended to spend my time primarily hiking and swimming in the less-touristy bits of the island, and found the location very suitable for that. The bus stops nearby, but don't count on getting a taxi from Cruz Bay to here, unless perhaps you're in a group. When I told Marcia my plan was to spend the second half of my vacation on St Thomas she commented that I would likely miss St John, and she was right - I loved the island and a big part of that was having such a comfortable place to stay. If I have a chance to return to St John I will certainly inquire whether this unit is available.

A week in St John, priceless!

5 of 5
5/16-5/23/08 With a sigh of contentment, I'm sitting out on the deck of Captain's Cabin looking around at the million dollar view (full moon rise) :). Time has moved more slowly this week and Jim and I have snorkeled every morning. I taught Biology for many years but books and videos can't come close to viewing the natural wonders first hand. The varied and dynamic life on the coral reef is a world away from the every day life back home in New England. In our opinion, the best snorkeling spots are those here on the South Shore. Our favorite: Great Lameshur Snorkel around the rocky shore on the left side of the beach and keep going! You'll see everything mentioned in this book (Captain's Cabin guestbook in the house) and more. Our favorites: a giant spotted ray (Spotted Eagle Ray), wahoo, nurse shark, and the amazing multi chromatic squid. Don't miss the hamburgers at Skinny Legs and Vie's garlic chicken. You can get your basic groceries at Lily's Market (a.k.a. Iraqi Packi) and beer, wine, rum, tequilla as well. Just expect to pay more. If Sue and Dan can accommodate you for a day of sailing on the 46' Shakti, you'll have a fantastic time. Thanks again, Sue for sharing this paradise and being such a considerate host.
