The pictures of the house are beautiful yet nothing prepared us for the moment when my family and I walked inside. This is a breathtaking place! Like walking into a book! Elegant in every detail yet warm and welcoming to us. We ran about the rooms excitedly discovering the beauty in each one. Every room is more picturesque than the next. Carpets warm the wood floors. Pictures adorn the walls. The curtains are sumptuous and in beautiful colors and fabrics. Our beds were so cozy and comfortable. It was hard to get up in the morning! The bathtubs were luxurious -- and the soaps and towels! The kitchen had everything we needed -- and more things besides. We cooked breakfast and lunch, the room bright even in the mid-winter light and looking out the back windows on our own river scene! (I forget which river.) The house was built in 1803 (a sign says) -- but with all of the comfort and sweetness it gave us, it is not just historic -- but timeless. The private river is out the back, while the front of the house faces the center of Woodstock VT -- a stone's throw from charming shops and restaurants! We walked for dinner and for coffee. The town has great shops to buy very Vermonty things (maple sugar leafs, etc.) We had to share our HomeAway home, so our NH friends come for drinks on the glassed in porch overlooking our own river scene. We played games and cards until the wee hours in the spacious living room. My son was even inspired to play the piano for us. Walked out -- and it was snowing! Oh, for California folks, this was the perfect mid-winter visit. Thank you HomeAway for allowing us to pretend this one of a kind home which so welcomed us -- is our very own. We loved it. We will be back.
