Meeting up with friends, I drove from Washington DC, passing through the bustle of New York City. As I drove further north, the falls colors greeted me in vibrant hues of yellow, orange and red. Upon entering Stowe I found a charming town center, passing by the local dairy farm on my left, and soon thereafter a goat creamery on my right.
My expectations were running high as I approached Stone Cottage and they were more than met. Stone cottage has been fully renovated, with an exceptional kitchen. Lots of space for friends to gather, and yet nooks to read a good book or to just look out as nature envelopes you on all sides.
Cross-country skiing is right outside the door. With great downhill slopes very near by. Biking and hiking are a must. Be sure to bring good boots. A short drive away, there is an exceptional interpretative trail taking you all the way down into Sterling Gorge. And the drive approaching the slopes is breathtaking, from the waterfalls, to the tight winding road, to the boulders unexpectedly appearing out of nowhere.
There is a grocery store conveniently located nearby for all the basics, but I would strongly recommended going into town and getting some of the excellent Stowe cheeses, milk, fresh baked breads, muffins etc. And I should not forget to mention the assorted selection of restaurants and cafes. Local farmers market on Sunday is worth the visit.
My stay was far to short and I look forward to returning for more exploring.
