5-star hotel in the comfort of home.

5 of 5
My family's Christmas this year was a truly memorable one - thanks to owner Betty and her lovely home. We arrived to find a beautiful Christmas tree which Betty had got from a local farm and decorated for us, all ready for our presents! The whole house was charmingly, seasonally decorated, smelled wonderful, and was toasty from the wood stove - prelit and waiting to warm us when we got in. Add to all that the inches of pristine snow on the ground when we arrived, and we were in heaven. The rest of our 3-night stay continued to wow us: that incredible, changing view from the living room (I worried that my teenage sons would be fused to those comfortable recliners!); the fully-stocked kitchen and pantry; the beautiful bathrooms with mountains of luxurious towels and toiletries; the top-notch appliances (Keurigs, TVs in every room, high-tech stove); the super comfortable beds; the organization and cleanliness that would impress any mother-in-law... and so much more. My older son loved his man cave - the fantastic studio apartment downstairs. My younger son was thrilled with his territory - the upstairs bedroom, living area and "fort". My husband enjoyed getting firewood from the barn and heating the home to tropical temps with the two wood stoves. I loved watching the squirrels and birds at the feeder - armed with Betty's bird books, I am a new birdwatching convert. Our dog was in true doggie heaven - exploring the grounds everyday, following wild animal tracks, and was spoiled with Betty's 4-legged guest amenities (leashes, bowls, bedding, paw wipers etc). Honestly, there was nothing lacking at Betty's home. If what you're looking for is natural, peaceful beauty away from the daily grind, but you can't live without life's little luxuries, then this is the place for you. My only regret writing this review is that the home might be booked for Christmas next year. But undaunted, my family will look forward to seeing the house in summer or fall - exploring the area's gorgeous mountains and hiking trails, and enjoying Betty's vegetable garden. We can't wait!

Peace, beauty, and a quiet place to work

This is our second stay at the lake front house on Neal Pond, and we'll be coming back. I am a software engineer and normally work remotely from my home. Home can be anywhere, so all I need is solid internet service. It's hard to find a rental surrounded by such beauty, yet with DSL service so that I could escape the New York City heat and get my work done. If we lose power during a storm, it's usually back on shortly thereafter. This house has everything we need. There is a washing machine, dryer and a dishwasher, a fully equipped kitchen, a fire pit, propane grill, and picnic table. Every day after finishing work, we grilled our dinner and ate outside. Then my wife and I would do a row around the pond before sitting outside by the campfire and watching the sun set behind the hills. The bass jumped in the pond, the frogs croaked, and the loons and ducks swam by. Friendly neighbors would say hello or join us. My wife likes to bake and cook, so another bonus was a Shaw's supermarket just 15 minutes away in Lancaster, NH. We saw an excellent show at the Weathervane theatre, Circus Smirkus in St Johnsbury, a classical music concert in Bethlehem NH, toured the Great North Woods of New Hampshire, and drove the back roads of Vermont looking for moose (we have yet to spot one). We went to Canada one evening for a delicious French dinner. The house is clean and everything works. The owner or his family promptly took care of any small issue or question we had. Would we recommend this rental? Definitely! But don't come when we want to!
