Well worth the return trip...

5 of 5
After last year's stay at Choestoe Sanctuary, we decided to return this October. The location and views are just perfect for us. In addition to revisiting some of our old "haunts", we drove to Brasstown Bald and thanks to a crisp, clear day we were able to see for miles. Amazing! We found plenty of fall color on Highway 64 in North Carolina and also enjoyed taking road trips along NC Highway 28 and US 74 into the Nantahala Gorge. Eating spots are plentiful and varied. Some of our favorites this trip were Mike's Seafood Restaurant and Jim's Smokin' Cue in Blairsville and The Chophouse in Murphy, NC. Numerous festivals were within minutes or 1 to 2 hours away. This year we drove toward Dalton, GA, and attended the Prater's Mill Country Fair which attracts numerous artisans and crafts people. Tours of the working Prater's Mill and other historic buildings were also available. We stayed close to the cabin 2 days due to very rainy weather, but we were content to stay warm and dry inside and relax while watching the rain coming down. As always, the cabin has everything necessary for a comfortable and welcoming stay. All in all we had a great time at Choestoe Sanctuary and have even made another reservation for next year. Thanks again for sharing your "home away from home", Carl and Esther. The Tileys

A Very Special Place

5 of 5
For people who like to plan vacations the way I do I find that sometimes you just don't get it right, other times you almost get it right, and then there are other times when you get it right. We got this one right. This cabin can teach many things among which is the joys of quietness. I got up one morning in order to go out on the porch and catch the morning gifts of fresh air, cool breezes, and morning dew on a spotless lawn. The day we arrived, the lawn was spotless, but the next morning, leaves had begun to fall, and the sight of fallen yellow leaves, and a cup of joe, on a crisp October morning, with natures symphony in the background, deepened our Fox Den experience. I join the chorus of reviewers who described this cabin as, neat and clean and I would add homey to the refrain. This is a "no frills" cabin that is filled with frills. This is not a contradiction in terms. It just depends on what you mean by "frills". If, by frills, you mean a hot tub, a game room, etc., then it is, no. But, if by frills, you mean, listening to John Denver on a quiet morning at the breakfast table, or sitting on a porch where everything rocks including the swing, the porch bench and two of the largest, most comfortable rocking chairs you have ever seen, or, sitting on the porch after a delightful day of activities, while the sun is setting and a cool breeze is making the kind of nature's music that people buy and play on their sound systems to sleep by, then Fox Den is full of frills. Fox Den teaches me that there is nothing better than old things that are well kept. The cabin is full of old things that seem to have souls that deepen with age. The quilts, the turntable, the art on the wall, the dressers are all well kept and beautiful. Everything in the cabin is convenient and user-friendly. Erik is more than a host or a facilitator. He appears to be more a part of all that I have described rather than merely a host. If anyone wanted to enjoy a getaway then this is the place to get away to. My wife and I will likely return to this place.
