Perfect Island Get-Away

5 of 5
My boyfriend and I travel often and decided to go somewhere new for his 40th Birthday. I found this beachfront cottage and was beyond pleased with my choice! The cottage is a perfect size for couples and had everything you need. I dont think we needed anything more than what was supplied already! It was a pleasant surprise to find items like dish soap, salt and pepper, coffee and coffee filters already stocked (as its such a waste to have to buy them for a short weeks visit- you can never use a whole bottle of dish soap or 50 coffee filters in that time!) The property owners sent us a packet of useful information prior to arriving. Upon our arival, we met Deb, who was extremely helpful with getting us settled in- she even helped use arrange a taxi ahead of time :) From getting to know whats around to which restaurants have events on specific nights, Deb was a valuable resource! We rented bikes from the dive shop that is only about a two minute walk from the cottage. We were able to bike around most of the island and explore. The dive shop folks were very helpful and famliy-like. They pointed us in the right direction for the best snorkeling and where to find other things we needed. All of the town restaurants/bars are within walking distance (excpet Bohio, which is about a 10 minute bike ride). We could even walk to the liquor store! The larger grocery store is a little long for a walk but is about a 5-10 minute bike ride, easily do-able. The cottage had everything we look for in a vacation rental- on the beach (and we were the ONLY people on it 99% of the time- which we loved), close to dining and necessities, and best of all- very private and low key! The porch was perfect for coffee in the morning, or wine in the evening, playing cards and relaxing- and thanks to the internet we could use the international music radio app "jango" (like pandora but can be accessed outside of the USA). We have already discussed that we plan on returning to this relaxing oasis. One of our favorite trips by far!!!

Don't judge a book by its cover!

4 of 5
When we first pulled up to the house, we were concerned by the worn and weathered look of the outside of the house but….don‘t judge a book by its cover!! We couldn’t have been happier with our stay at this house! Although the pictures on the site are a bit outdated, it was perfect. Perfect location to “town”, most of the restaurants, and dive shops. We needed a place to stay for 3 adults and a 5 year old. There was plenty of room for all of us and the master bedroom and bathroom had a privacy door that separated us from the living area. Everything was neat, clean and plenty of supplies throughout the house including towels, soaps, etc. Only 3 things about the house that we’d have liked which is a dresser in the little bedroom my son used (I didn’t have anywhere to keep his clothes for the duration of our stay), a phone, and a safe. Although I’m sure this island is really safe, we were traveling with a lot of cash and had nowhere to keep it. And without a phone, it was difficult planning things to do around the island. Luckily, everyone is so incredibly nice, many people offered to make calls for us or let us use their phones! Also, don't expect the property manager to check in on you during your stay which is good for the most part that she isn't intruding but there were times we could have used some recommendations for local activities. There’s a dirt road leading from the main street, Duke Street, to the house. It is a very, very short walk to the Osprey Hotel (the "fine" dining on the island where we ate breakfast and dinner a lot). Grand Turk Dive shop is directly across the street from the Osprey and offers bike rentals (but be prepared to pay an outrageous deposit per day per bike!!!!). Be sure to eat at the Secret Garden, too which is just down from Grand Turk diving…they have the best prices, the best food and the best people working there. We weren’t thrilled with The Sandbar restaurant but if you eat there check your receipt before you pay!! There are a lot of other really good local places to eat away from Duke Street… Barbie’s, the Poop Deck, Jack’s Shack. Oh and be mindful of the time as many of the restaurants stop serving at certain times of the day…they are definitely on their own schedules and not for us tourists. With the house right on the beach, we could go for long walks down beautiful white sand beaches with hardly another person around. It was great! Loved the house and the location and Grand Turk!

sandcastles

4 of 5
The property was exactly as listed : very quiet, private and relaxing. We walked the beaches every day , very enjoyable. We were met at the airport, arrangements were made for a car, and Gail's recommendations were really good, we ate at a different restaurant every night. The restaurant choices are limited, however and this is not an island for those seeking nightlife. It appears that scuba and snorkeling diving are the main draws. We were very happy with Sandcastles and Grand Turk for the lack of typical tourist attractions. I recommend the Bohio dive resort for snorkeling and dinner. We used the bikes every day for the shorter trips, we were surprised at how many of the residents greeted us, either by a wave or hello. Grand Turk offers subtle attractions, beyond the beaches, found by walking or biking around the island. I would highly recommend this property for anyone looking to get away from it all.
