My daughter and I had a wonderful 10 night stay at the beautiful Sultan Suites. Nafiye, the owner, was the perfect hostess! After a long flight from the States and what felt like an even longer wait at passport control, she greeted us at the apartment with wine, cheese and fruit.
Our main apartment was on the top floor and overlooked the Golden Horn from the living room and balcony. My daughter had her own smaller but equally fabulous apartment on the first floor. Our apartments were outfitted in Ottoman style and were warm, comfortable and very elegant. The woodworking, crystal chandeliers and intricate paintings are lovely. Bedrooms are situated on a quiet back street facing the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate (not to be missed). There was plenty of cupboard space to unpack everything and stow the luggage. The kitchen is very well-equipped and the washer/dryer was a big plus for our long stay.
We loved the wonderful Haman baths. What is not mentioned in the apartment description is that there are also rain showers! I also need to mention the beautiful Turkish towels and wonderful soaps that Nafiye supplied.
The location was perfect for us. You are within walking distance of the main old city sites, but far enough away so that you can escape the din. There is a wonderful waterfront walk to the well-known historical attractions. You can also walk street-side, but be advised that you will need to walk in the street, at times. Crossing some streets can be an adventure.
There are restaurants close by and one of Atatürk’s favorite spots is right around the corner. Be sure to have breakfast on the rooftop. There is also a cozy restaurant on the bottom floor of the apartment building with a good breakfast and gracious owners.
Thanks to Nafiye, we were able to enjoy an experience beyond the usual tourist spots and are very grateful for her generosity. You can always stay in a hotel, or tag along with a tour group, but the opportunity to become immersed in local culture and have a unique and authentic experience is not to be missed. We can’t wait to return.
