          Overall pleasant apartment

          4 of 5
My two daughters (ages 14 and 11) and I stayed here for 4 nights in early June 2014. The apartment is relatively small, but very functional, with a separate bedroom and then a sitting area off a small kitchen. There is a tiny balcony off the bedroom with views of Lake Geneva, with seating for two people. The decor is dated, and the apartment is a bit worn, but overall our experience was good. Each morning we would throw open the shutters and felt that like Belle in "Beauty and the Beast" we should shout "Bonjour" to the neighbors. The beds were adequate, more like a futon and a sofa in feel, but sufficiently comfortable. It was wonderful to have a kitchen. Eating out is expensive in Montreux, and in Switzerland generally, so we saved a fortune by eating breakfasts and dinners in our apartment. Please be aware that the kitchen uses a manual light gas stove, which I haven't used in ages, so it took a little time to get used to it. Basic items such as salt/pepper and tea were provided in the apartment. The grocery store (and everything else in town, including the train station) is down a very steep hill. Reasonably athletic people should have no problem getting to town within 10 minutes walking, but coming up we recommend the very easy and free bus as it is quite a steep climb, especially when it is very hot outside. The information on the bus is included in the apartment. The bus stop is very convenient. The apartment is located in a quiet residential area. We felt quite safe, although the apartment is a first floor walk-up, so we felt that we had to lock and shutter all the windows at night (shutter to keep out the light). In our case, this was something of a problem, as it was over 90 degrees while we were in Montreux and the apartment was quite warm. It would have been great to have some fans to move the air about, but none were provided. The pickup (and drop-off) by Mme. Jolliet was very helpful. Between her small amount of English and my small amount of French, we got along fine. However, it would have been helpful to have a booklet of English instructions in the apartment covering information such as where to put garbage (we never did know the answer to that question), laundry, how to light the oven, etc. Good internet access was available at the apartment for an additional fee. As I recall, it was 12 francs for the four nights, and well worth it to keep communications with our family (although normally included).
