Great way to stay on Nevis

4 of 5
Talk about the personal touch... This is the opposite of impersonal resorts and run-of-the-mill condos and time shares. This is a real house with use of the Duncan's stuff. Gigi and Charlie moved out while we where there. The description on VRBO is quite accurate. Nice ocean view from upland a bit and in a neighborhood. And personal service, too. Gigi picked us up at the airport and gave pointers on where to eat and what to do all the way to her place. Full explanation on how to work everything in the house -- so much that we couldn't remember it all. When we couldn't get doors and the safe to cooperate, she or Charlie were there in minutes. They even left us a local burner phone to use while on the island! Also got a rental car delivered to the house (you'll need that). Excellent advice on restaurants, the ferry system, what to see, etc. And if we had any trouble anywhere on the island she would help. They've been on Nevis for 20 or 30 years and nearly everyone we met on the island knew them. So we really had an entry to the island. I took one star off 'cause there were a few rough edges. Some windows were broken (not the glass -- sashes just didn't stay open without a prop), some doors didn't work right, and there were missing screens on the doors. I got bug bit quite a bit on the first night or two but there were plenty of bug sprays at the house. I tried several until I found one that worked well and now I know a new brand that I wouldn't have discovered... I'll be getting some of that, myself. I know the Duncans are getting new screens to address this. Oh, and Nevis didn't cooperate with our schedule and the wind blew like and angry witch for nearly the whole time we were there.. Not the Duncan's fault, though, and the wind was blowing throughout most the Caribbean at the time. The house was also quite dark and no good reading lights. There are extra bulbs to be found, though. You can't get air conditioning in the living room/kitchen area but you really do get used to the "island way" of leaving everything open and letting the breeze do the work. AC in the master is strong but noisy. My wife and I truly relaxed and enjoyed having "our own house" while there, though. It was fun just discovering all the utensils and things to use in the house. Soap for the dishwasher, soap for the cloths washer, the bug sprays, books to read, DVDs to watch, etc. Totally clean except for some bugs in the windows. Pool is for plunging.

We loved Hummingbird House!

5 of 5
We were extremely fortunate to spend three glorious weeks at Hummingbird House and even that was not enough! It was exactly as I had expected and even better. So quiet and private, close to everything, beautiful gardens, and extremely comfortable. We saw more monkeys than I ever imagined right in our very own yard, and hummingbirds galore to boot! The set up was roomy and perfect, the beds comfortable and the entire house felt like home. The loungers on the pool deck were more comfortable than I can describe, and the pool was glorious! Perfect size and perfect temperature. Richard and Claire went out of their way to make sure that we were taken care of in every way. They organized our car rental, our transfer from the airport to Oualie, our guests transfers, and even checked in often to give us ideas what might be fun to do each day. Never have I experienced service like that from the owners of houses we have rented in the past. Thank you so very much! We loved Nevis. Loved the quiet, loved how easy it was to navigate, loved the people, loved the food, loved the topography, loved it all:) We try a new island each year and I can honestly say that we will be back. Have no doubts about this house......if you have the opportunity, go for it!

Wish we were still there

Lazy Turtle was a fabulous house for my husband and I to stay for our first visit to Nevis. I would return in a heartbeat to enjoy the quiet solitude and relaxing pace of Nesbit Beach. Jane has a network of helpful people to get there with the least bit of hassle, a well oiled machine. The house is just right with a wonderful large screened porch that overlooks the pool. Enjoyed coffee and views of the ocean sitting poolside with the black heron and hummingbirds. Very secluded and private but easily accessible to stroll over to Nesbit Beach Plantation. Had a great tour with Marlon Brando to get a lay of the land and decide where to go back to explore on our own. Hope to be able to return to Nevis and Lazy Turtle again in the future.
