Wow! Far Exceeded Our Expectations!

5 of 5
If you are looking for that perfect, quiet, off-the-beaten path rental home, this is definitely the place for you! Having been to the HHI and Bluffton area before, we were seeking a nice, quiet location on this trip to just get away, relax, read, sleep in and not have a set agenda. You can't get much more quiet and relaxing than the Devil's Elbow Cottage on Bears Island! The only thing that "disturbed" our peace during our week were the many bird songs, squirrels and shore birds. The screened in porch was a perfect spot for morning coffee, an afternoon nap and evening cocktails as the sun was going down. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the view from the master bedroom is beyond description! The cottage is really a well-appointed house next to the main house at the end of an island, separated only by a thin, dirt road that crosses the salt marsh. Its a bit off the beaten path, needing to enter via Colleton River Plantation, but its well worth it. The distance to 278 could only have been 4-5 miles or so as the crow flies, but we felt a world away. The best part about where the cottage is located is that you can be right in the heart of the HHI/Bluffton action in about 5-10 minutes! The house was very clean, well decorated and had everything you would need to spend a nice long week in solitude. Peter and Leisa were wonderful to work with in getting the reservation locked in, gave us great driving directions, had a bunch of good recommendations for dining and activities and respected our privacy...but were very accommodating when needed. We felt truly fortunate to have the opportunity to experience this treasure! I can only hope that we will have the opportunity to return someday!

It was love at first sight!

5 of 5
We chose to go to the island during the off season and it did not disappoint. Between Loretta's information and other reviews we were perfectly prepared for our visit. We stopped at the dock in Bluffton and picked up our seafood at theDaufuskie Oyster company. Chris, from May River Excursions, picked us up at another dock in Bluffton and whisked us away to Daufuskie. Chris pointed the highlights along the way and brought us to the county dock. Freddie from Daufuskie Transport helped us unload all our belongings and was kind enough to take us to the ferry landing where we would pick up our friends the next day. We had been to Daufuskie once but only for the afternoon so we were not familiar with our surroundings. When we opened the front door to the cottage we were greeted by the beautiful ocean view. Whether we were sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, cooking In the kitchen or eating dinner at the table The ocean was in front of us. The cottage feels so spacious because of its design. The split bedroom/bathroom plan provides plenty of privacy. We left our shutters open in the master so that we could watch the sunrise over the ocean. The porch was fabulous but it was a little too cool for us to use.The beds were so comfortable. Head down to Marshside Mama's for some gumbo, and explore as many dirt rods as you can. Freddie says that you can't get lost but take your map with you. We saw alligators, a bald eagle, dolphins and gifts from the sea. I could write forever. If you are a Pat Conroy fan, be sure to visit all the places you read about in The Water Is Wide.it seemed like all our connections on the island were flawless. These guys have this down to a science so that you never wait for anything. It is a slow paced island to relax and unwind.

Excellent location, perfect property!

Was already familiar with quaint town of Port Royal and loved the property. Very nicely furnished and details considered when thinking about a short term rental guest. This was the perfect location for our visit and we would book again when we go back to the area.
