Just returned from Loretta’s cottage at Daufuskie Island. Loretta was great…timely with all pertinent information and really caring about the quality of our visit. Our family, not having visited Daufuskie before, was a bit anxious about making the land, water and land again connections as well as ensuring we stocked the right provisions for a week away from a grocery store. She was a wonderful host.
The cottage was a comfortable and welcome respite from our normally hectic lives. We found it furnished beautifully and well stocked with books, games and beach chairs. We were pleasantly surprised by how spacious it felt. The open living/dining/kitchen space worked well and the bedrooms and baths were generously sized. The star of the cottage, and where we spent our entire non-World Cup watching time, was the huge screened porch that faces the ocean.
A trip to Daufuskie was a different animal from our past peak season beach vacations. Just a three-minute walk from the back porch to the sand and we had the beach to ourselves every morning for long strolls, and mostly to ourselves every afternoon when we swam, read and lounged.
We loved seeing the abundant wildlife (deer, alligators, herons, dolphins) when walking, running, biking and boating. “Nightlife” to us for the week was stargazing on clear nights and enjoying the breeze when a storm brewed over the ocean.
The aspects of Daufuskie Island that appealed to us—unhurried pace, quietude, lack of commerce and a vibrant aquatic eco-system—are probably possible only because it is boat accessible. Absolutely worth a return trip.
Thanks again, Loretta, for sharing.
