We had a wonderful stay at Villas del Mar last week. The unit was tastefully decorated and furnished. They were very accomodating, especially considering our delayed arrival at 1:00 a.m. While we only used the master bedroom, the other two were equally quiet and well appointed. We decided to stay in one night and we cooked dinner on the grill on the balcony. Washer/dryer units were in the apartment, which was helpful. We needed help with something and Victoria was happy to oblige with a moment's notice.
This is a gated, guarded community with a private beach and we felt very secure the whole time. The entire complex is in great shape and is well-managed and landscaped. Even though this was the off-season, there were workers around every day keeping the place in shape. It was neat to see iguanas sunning themselves on the parking lot each day (we only have squirrels back home!).
Villas del Mar is very close to many must-see sites. I find it incredible that I can be on the beach at one moment, and be in the El Yunque rainforest less than 30 minutes later. Good access to the island's only big highway (66) was helpful. For those that cannot do without, there is a Walmart a few miles away.
This resort, like the others nearby, is in a working class neighborhood. Lots of schools around, with all the students in their uniforms; people going to and from work; roadside vendors with fruits and meats; etc. This is a world away from the tourist and cruise traps in San Juan and the overcrowded beaches. By the time we headed back to San Juan to catch our flight, we wondered why anyone would want to stay in SJ and not see the real side of Puerto Rico.
Next time we head to PR, we will check availability with this unit first!
