Close to Beaches -- and on Island Time

    5 of 5
My husband and I are frequent travelers, and we enjoy staying at places that are close to all the attractions -- but far enough off the beaten path that we don't feel like tourists. "La Finca," as we nicknamed it, fits that bill perfectly. The farm house is just minutes to the beaches in Boqueron and Combate, and about half-an-hour to some major surf in Rincón. Yet when you return home to "La Finca" with its tiny fruit orchard and bird's eye view of the coast, you're on island time. The perfect place to watch the sunset and enjoy a cold drink before heading out to one of the nearby towns for some night-life! But don't stay out too late, because the next morning, the proprietor may surprise you with some fresh-brewed local coffee and suggestions for adventures around the island. If you are a diver or a naturalist, you will not be disappointed, as the property is close to some great diving spots in La Parguera and to hiking trails at the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge. The proprietor, who is a dive master, arranged for us to take a boat out to snorkel around the reefs and mangroves, and finally to end the evening with a dip in the Bioluminescent Bay. It was these experiences that made our stay at "La Finca" so special! As far as amenities go: There were only two of us, but the house could have fit more. It has a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, huge living room, and screened-in porch. The proprietor, who is a photographer coming from a long line of artists, has decorated the house with paintings, lithographs, and sculptures that give it an eclectic feel. The place was clean and organized, but clearly not a luxury hotel...It is simply not boring enough! The "Finca" is a special place that we look forward to calling "home" for a week out of each year. We would highly recommend it to other travelers.
