My husband and I spent a week at Canary Castle with another couple in June 2014. Initially we were put off a bit by the neighborhood as there are some abandoned buildings next door. Once we entered the brightly painted home, our concerns melted away! We never felt unsafe at all and came to enjoy the local neighborhood scenes. The home is spacious with lots of little nooks to gather and chat. It's filled with character and charm with varieties of art, ceramics and personal touches. But the highlight of Canary Castle is the outdoor living space. There are several layered areas of living space with table and chairs, hammocks, cushioned chaise and of course the pool and spa. Beyond that living space is your backyard - a beautiful sandy and private beach! Right down the beach is a public beach that is punctuated by cliffs and rocks where the Arecibo Lighthouse sits....picture perfect!
We enjoyed the area of Arecibo due to the central location. We were within an hours drive to El Yunque, Old San Juan to the East, many different caves to the south and the beaches of Aguadilla and Rincon to the West. We explored them all and still could have done more.
We did do most of our own cooking in Wanda's well appointed kitchen. However, we did go out to eat dinner at The Salitre restaurant (5 minute drive) and it was awesome! Highly recommend it...huge menu...great seafood with views of the ocean while you eat. We also had lunch at one of the little road side stands that populate route 681. It was simple fare...but very yummy..lots of plantains, empanadas, kabobs and seafood.
This was our 3rd trip to Puerto Rico and our friend's first trip. It was by far our best...Thanks Wanda and Nelson for making your house our home for a week.
